Gift Exchange: Basenji Buddies Summer 2008

Basenji Talk

  • Zahra received her goodies from Medjai last Friday I haven't had the opportunity to chat about them yet because I was away on business but she loves the little tennis balls and Chase loves the rubber toys which means in a short period of time Zahra will be stealing them away!

Thank you you Medjai and Michael for sharing your favorite toys!

    This is so much fun!

  • Tosca got her basenji buddy gift yesterday!!! Thank you so much Andrew and Shango for being so generous and thoughtful. Tosca LOVED her gifts, which were 3 wonderful stuffed toys to play with, a bag of Mini Naturals Treats, and a TON of specialty items and bully sticks from the dog bakery! The treats from the bakery are so cute…one looks just like an eclair! Tosca absolutely loves them, she is constantly trying to get up on the kitchen table and sneak a treat!

She loves the stuffed animals as well...she already managed to chew a hole in the monkey...but so far she's been ok with them, and of course we are playing right along with her to make sure they don't get destroyed too quickly!

Thanks for the nice letter as well, its nice to learn a little bit more about Shango and his daddy!

Here are some pictures of Tosca opening and playing with all the gifts...I tried to get an action shot of her throwing around the stuffed animals cause it was so darn cute...I did the best I could :)

Thank you again so much! You were very thoughtful, and this was SO much fun!!!

You're welcome! It's SO cool to see Tosca playing with the toys we picked out. Shango LOVES the cheetah toy so much so I knew we had to share it!

We had a blast too, glad Tosca likes the gifts!

  • Beegin and Brady got our basenji buddy gift recently. Very sweet to send stick notes - I was running low.

The stuff bear is a big hit as you can see below!
Sorry I guess I still can't figure out how to put pictures in here so they are in the attachments.

  • I'm glad they like the "baby". And I thought it would be a nice idea to send a few sticky notes for Beegin ;-)
To be honest, I did not dare to send any treats, as I am not sure, if the customs will allow that or if they would hold back the whole shipment.

I try to upload our pictures within the next days. My camera is on strike now. But the dogs loved the toys and treats, specially the peanut-butter cookies and of course the sock-snake, which is no longer alive due to massive wounds and losses of important parts ;-)

    Regards,
    Esther

  • Finally, I managed to download the pictures from my camera.

Banshee was my helper unpacking the package. She really enjoyed it. And the others love to play with the orca toy (which already has lost its "fringes"), the ball is under the cupboard and the chewies have been chewed well. They really loved the peanutbutter-cookies and the snake of socks is torn to pieces.

They really had a lot of fun with all the things in the package. Thank you very much, Shannon!

    Regards,
    Esther

  • Esther,

I so glad everything got there okay and that your pack enjoyed everything. The orca toy insides don't last long at my house either:)

PS Your black and white b is beautiful! I'm in love with the reds but the other colors are growing on my too!

  • pst, Shannon, all my b's are black and white ;)
Gromit the half-breed Basenji is fula black and Vega the galgo has kind of a cinnamon colour.

Yes, they really love to throw the snake of socks around and the orca toy even managed to be thrown out of the window already…. they have fun.

    Regards,
    Esther

  • I am curious what are the snake socks?

  • Hi Jenn,
can you see the socks right underneath Banshee? This is the snake of socks. A pulling fun game for the B's. The socks ar knotted into eachother so they are kind of a chain/snake…

    Regards,
    Esther

  • Do you make it or is it a store bought toy?

  • @ChaseandZahrasmom:

Do you make it or is it a store bought toy?

:D :) I think Shannon made the snake herself. I cannot imangine, that she has a shop somewhere, where to buy old socks and knot them into eachother. But I think on the picture, you cannot see, that the socks are old.

Sorry, for that. No, I think it is a good way to give your "golf" socks (the ones with up to 18 holes) a last job. We use them as a tug of war toy for the b's because they can pull them, throw them and sometimes I do even operative surgery on a dead furry toy to get the squeeker out and put it into a sock of war. ;)

    Regards,
    Esther

  • that's brilliant Esther.. oh one day I might be knocking at your door for a little BW baby… your dogs are absolutely stunning!

  • Thanks Lauren.

By the way, my grandmom lived in Lausanne for more than 30 Years. It is so nice there. I can remember parts of it, specially this old wooden bridge with the roof….

    Regards,
    Esther

  • was it Lausanne or Luzern/Lucerne?

I actually know both of them quite welll.. but Lucerne (swiss-german speaking city) has that lovely long wooden bridge with all the flowers. It's right in the middle of the city. Good memories of that bridge - had my first Swiss kiss there. :P

Does your grandmum speak Swiss German? it's a super awesome language

  • sorry, Luzern, was the City. I always mix them up.

My Granny did speak a little Schwizerdütsch but she was originally from Vienna and has learned it through the Years. She passed away more then 20 Years ago, but I still can remember the smell of Luzern and of special things around her.

    Regards,
    Esther

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

I got my package on Monday!!! :) I haven't had time to update but Dallas loved all of his gifts! He loved the loofa dog! He was carrying it all around the house with him Monday evening. He & our family dog have been playing tug of war with the rope that he received. Oh, and Tuesday he found the bag of milkbones on my dresser while I was at work…thankfully he didn't eat the plastic bag  The bones, obviously, are gone. Such a pig
