OFA Question

Basenji Talk
  • So from time to time I go to the OFA website and check out the basenjis (and breeders) for fanconi status and other health testing info. I noticed something on one page that I wasn't sure what it meant.

On some dogs instead of a 9 letter/digit registration (Ruby is AKC registered and has a 9 character registration) they have a 15 letter/digit registration. And when you go into the individual page about the dog, they have the fanconi status but no other health information. The sire and dam have registration numbers but when you do a search on sire/dam reg numbers the message you get is "unknown other than as parent".

Are these byb or puppymill dogs? There is no other health testing information on any of the ones I've looked at. Are the 15 letter/digit numbers not AKC registration numbers and is just used to identify the dog for the OFA?

    I'm just curious.

  • OFA number is different from the AKC number and different from the CPP number etc. I found out that there are several different testing programs going on and can be reported centrally as well as on individual sites. So different testing programs, different registration numbers - it gets confusing.

And on a related note things can get messed up – I had EL D tested for fanconi (got results over the phone) but they never got posted to the website because the blood test got done before his CPP registration took effect. I tried to get this fixed but no such luck so it will never be posted.

  • these dogs might come from other countries than the USA. I guess this kind of registration number you could find with my dogs as well and they are definetely not from a puppy mill…. ;)

If you want to, please check Old Legend's Anam Chara for example. I have sent all the informations about his relatives (as far as I know them) while I have registered him with the CPP and I was very surprised how less of the information has been transfered to the OFA Site....

    Regards,
    Esther

  • CPP doesn't post to OFA. Fanconi test results are posted separate and have nothing to do with what you enter on the CPP site.

Thanks!!! That makes sense. I did just look at Old Legend's Anam Chara and at the same time I saw one with the Sternhimmel kennel name that looked the same way (my boy Brando is from Sternhimmel in Finland)…so the dogs coming from different countries makes sense. Thanks for that...it never dawned on me. :)

  • And even Basenjis that came from Backyard breeders or pet stores (puppymills) have some sort of number, it can be made up by the owner so they will look different also.

It would be helpful, I think, if OFA put the country of origin next to the registration number is from someplace other then the US

Did not know that. But what for do you have to answer then the whole questions, when you register with the CPP?

And yes, it would be helpfull, if you would be able to see in which country the B's are registered if they are not in the US.

Because CPP uses that data for other studies.

My boyfriend and I got our Basenji in February, and he's 9 months now. We did our research, used positive reinforcement training, crated him at night until he was potty trained and then let him sleep in the bed with us, and we had extensive play sessions with him in the mornings and walked him until he (or we!) got tired in the afternoon/evening. He's crated for a few hours during the day when both of us are at work; we live in a small apartment with no room for an x-pen, and are considering doing some test runs with leaving him free in the apartment, because he hasn't been destructive the few times that he has escaped his crate. Result: he sticks to us like glue. Though we rarely get to let him off-leash anywhere, he likes to keep us in sight and keeps a watchful eye on strangers who come near us both in and out of the house. We still have playtime with him in the morning (anywhere between 30 mins and 1 and a half hours of fetch, tug-o-war, chasing, and the Basenji500), and we try our hardest to give him a good long walk before we go to bed. He's okay with the crate, though he doesn't hang out in it of his own free will, but he tolerates it for when we're gone. His most destructive times are in the morning when he wakes up before us and decides to see if we were silly enough to leave any clothing or paper in his reach to shred up (we've lost money, a deck of cards, shoes, underwear, shirts, bookbags, etc.), and in the afternoon when one or both of us happens to be home but not paying attention to him, so he starts tugging on drapes, bedding, even the carpet - but more to get our attention than actually ruin anything. It's work, but Paco makes it worth it in the end with cuddles, doggy-smiles, and never-ending enthusiasm!

EL D is almost 4 and his neck is 14. My Vet carries a toothpaste made by C.E.T. that comes in chicken or seafood flavor. It supposed to be better for tartar control.

@Jylly18: THanks everyone for the advice, she ended up being fine, I fed her this morning and no throw-up when we got home :) I was just worried cause she has never done it more than once before. Its funny about how you said you put her over the toilet, my husband managed to hold her over the garbage when she threw up, so she looked ridiculous but at least it made no mess! HaHaHa! That conjures up a picture!

Shadow also used to 'pick' at his food. He started expanding so I cut back the food at each feeding and now he is eating normally and finishes his bowl when the others do.
