Missing the girls

  • Welcome, and please share your fond memories. I often wonder if the B's from 20 plus years ago acted the same way they do today.

Care to share what breeding lines and how your parents "found" their 'senjis?

I see you're in Packerland. I'm near the border, but officially a flatlander. If you're ever in the SE corner of WI and need a Basenji 'fix', let me know. You
    are welcome to visit.

Again, welcome kidsalisbury. Dawn from Waukegan (aka Snorky998)

  • Welcome :) I am from Wisconsin as well, where are you located? I am in Kiel, about 20 min from Sheboygan. Like Snorky said, if you are in the area, I would love to meet up as well!

  • @kidsalisbury:

as I was growing up, my parents and I raised basenjis. haven't owned one for about 20 yrs but I still miss them:( . can tell alot of stories about them. some day would like to own [can't say own because they own you] again. love their attitude and antics:eek:. glad i found this web site.

Welcome… did you have a kennel name?

  • Welcome to the forum! :)

  • thank you for the warm welcomes. I don't remember the bloodlines that we had, but Mom used the breeding line of ODDEAH [SPELLING?] which is apache for rear end of. We also had appaloosas on the farm. yes, I can tell you all sorts of stories of how Dandy found his way to our house after a fire, Missy punishing Mom, wanting to go for rides, and more. One of the bloodlines that does come to mind was about Teakatu's father was on the Johnny Carson show, and was on of the first Basenjis ever televised.

  • I am from southwestern Wisconsin and would like to find decendents of the parents, and to find out how they are.

  • Hmm, we have a very large data base site for pedigrees and I find nothing under that kennel name or under Teakatu? Could be be under a different name? Was that used for registration? Do you remember any other of the dogs registered names? The site is http://www.pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com if you want to seach.

  • Are you going to get another b?

  • when i have a house and not an apartment then i would like to get another basenji. I think my present husband and a basenji would get along great. They have pretty much the same attitudes:rolleyes: I think Teakatu was the name we gave her. I think her real name was Rose something. also when i get another b i would have to get two, just to keep the other busy or maybe they will think of things together to get into

  • Welcome. Im in badgerland too. At the mad city.
    BaMicas mom

  • I found the two main b's that we raised. Little Dandy of Ohdiah {Dandy} and Kingmen Sailors Sunset Rose{Teakatu}. Thank you for the link.

He was a terror from day 1 We have an old Rescue dog if he would be on the couch Joey would walk up and just look at him until he would jump down it was hilarious. Nothing was safe on the counter unless it was in the middle. He would swing his paw up and swipe stuff right off. But he was a real affectionate boy as well I sure miss him 🙁

@renaultf1: My 15mo (Aaliyah) was litter trained. I had no problem transitioning her to outdoors. I initially had 2 litter boxes set up - 1 upstairs (in an xpen with her crate) and 1 downstairs. Almost immediately she preferred to go outside - only ever pooped in the house (in the litter box) once. So I removed the one downstairs and kept the one upstairs until she now longer used it (around 6 mo). There was no confusion at all about going outside - when she was out, she went - especially if on a walk - because of the excitement. I'm in Maine - so it was cold and snowy when she first came home - really, really snowy last winter. She loved being outside and was always the last one to want to come in. I actually credit her not having any care about weather (snow or rain) because she started playing outside at 12 weeks. To this day even if it is pouring she doesn't put up a fuss about going out and is actually excited - unlike my other 2 who go out begrudgingly. Oh, and I used Equine Pine pellets for the litter box. Same as Feline Pine, but can the Equine version can be purchased in 30lb bags at Tractor Supply for about $6 a bag. Maggie is doing much better about going outside. She's using her litter box less and less. We had a ton of rain last night into this morning however, which caused her to use her little box this morning. By the afternoon we had her back outside. She's basically refusing to go out in the rain and stands in the yard with one leg up if it is even a little bit moist. We are using corn cob bedding as she was the only one in the litter who had a reaction to the pine bedding. I guess I'll keep the litter box around for rainy days. :-)

Actually, the Springer is designed so the dog can't run too far forward or backwards. The dog essentially has to stay right beside the bike. If a dog was particularly persistent, as a basenji is wont to be, it could somehow get between the two bike wheels, in that area underneath the seat, to the other side. That has never happened though. Once the wheels are spinning, Rou seems to instinctively understand that they are to be avoided. Rou says thanks for the bones! -pamela
