AKC Field Champion!!!

  • Liz and I went to South Carolina last weekend for coursing and had a great time despite the weather. We had with us 4 dogs: Riley, Zip, Carrie's Lola and a 6 month old whippet boy who was going back to his breeder (Shannon Down Whippets) after his Atlanta area home did not work out. He was such a sweetheart and swiftly stole Liz's heart.

Zippy had 2 - 5pt majors (both from BIFS) and 2 points going in, so she needed three pts to finish. On Saturday the only other basenji was Calvin, the #1 lure coursing basenji, Eldorado's In Jokuba Style. Zip narrowly outcoursed him for BOB, he was excellent competition for her. For BIF 6 dogs ran and Zippy was called back to run with an RR. She won! 4pt Major! Woooot! Go Zip Zip! That was her 3rd AKC BIF and she has one (or two?) in ASFA.

Lola and Riley also had very successful runs for the first legs of their JC. And in the pouring rain no less. They were very on it and consistent.

On day 2 Lola and Riley finished their JC's first thing and as they have both run very successfully with ASFA we stuck them right in Open. Riley had really great runs and his score came out the highest of the four basenjis. Zip got 1st place in specials stake over Calvin. We decided to forfeit Zip for BOB and we ran Riley for BIF. He ran with a greyhound and saluki. We thought he really kept up with them and we were happy to have him experience running with other breeds. He got a 3 pt major for BOB.

And then we got to drive straight into that crazy snow storm on the way home and we survived only because Liz drove ;)

  • Congrats!!!

  • Congrats! Oh, and Calvin is my boy Brando's son. :D

  • Congrats….. way to go

  • Congrats on a wonderful coursing weekend!

  • thanks guys :D:D

I said to Liz after the BIF that every time Zip blows me away like that I feel obligated to go coursing farther and more often, like we owe it to her or something….

I have a lunge whip, which we've played with ever since I got her. She loves it. I tried her at it on a small course back in July at our club picnic (here's the video, I've posted it before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gl6NAGvjow) and she took off like a crazy girl. That was her second time doing it that day. A few months before that she was a little unsure of what to do. So, it sounds like to practice her a number of times to get her highly focused on the lure. I'm guessing Sue might be going to Racine in August, but if you're there too Lisa, I'd appreciate any input on her "focus" if she gets to do some practice runs. Clay

But then I recommend that all be muzzled when running. I never used to.. but over the years of coursing have totally changed my mind. But not because dogs might be nasty… If you start out your dogs with a muzzle, they begin to associate the muzzle with coursing and know when that goes on they are going to "chase" the bunny. I would prefer that it was "required" for all hounds to run muzzled like it is for Oval/Straight line.
