Chafuo Scared us…

  • This morning when we drink coffee, Kas saw a bump on the nose of Chafuko

We scared and gave him a whole body check, and around his nose were a couple of bumps, lika a musquito bite.

We checked everyting and only around his nose, he has the bumps.
He doesn't act weird or sick, it doesn't itch, he ate very good and he has no trouble with his breath.

But for sure we searched for a phone number and an adress of a local vet, so if it becomes bad, we jump in the car and go to the vet (our car is already off the ship so thats nice to know)

A hour earlier, I counted and look at alle the bumps, it didn't get worse but I write every bump down on a paper (so I won't forget the exact place and I can keep looking after it)

    I came up with this:

    • 2 bumps on his nose between his nose and eyes
    • 2 under his left eyes
    • 1 fat lip at the right.

The bumps are all loose and he has no pain when I feel them.
I washed his nose to make sure there is no allergic fabric on his face.

Well, we think he has an reaction on a plant or someting like that. It just became spring and I have trouble with plants myself!

If it's not better this afternoon we take him to the vet just to make sure it's not someting very bad. (I don't think so, because he didn't had it yesterday)

But he scared us, and I keep checking him up…

It's so weird, I'm an vet-assistant (well, I got my graduation) but when it becomes my own dogs...:(
    I loose my mind...

Is anyone familiar with an allergic reaction at the face of a B?
(our Buana has a musquito allergie and will get the same bumps as Chafuko has but ons his legs and back)

  • It sure sounds like he has put his face into something that had caused an allergic reaction of some kind, just keep a close eye on him.

Thanks, that was our idea also, I checked him a few minuts ago and nothing different, he?s snoozing in the sun now, and about an hour or so we?re going for a walk and we will look for weird plants and "things"

  • I think it prob is an allergic reaction to a plant/insect.. Do you know when he got the first bumb..? Maybe during a walk?

Tillo had this last year: http://www.basenjiforums.com/showthread.php?t=3802&highlight=mirtillo+nose, also an allergic reaction to plants. He gets it in the summer months especially when walking/sniffing in the forrest.. Hoping it won't bother him this year..

Btw.. I find it remarkable how many b's are bothered by allergic reactions to food/plants/insect..

Yes! Thats exactly the same, Chafuko fat lip looks like!!!!
He got the first bump this morning after their walk, he is the one that dig up the whole area for nice things to carry with him.. In his mouth.

We just got back from a walk and I see a lot of plants, there is also a field that has some old plants in it ( net als bamboe stengels) he is very in love with that field and dig up the old plants.. Maybe one of the plants has a plant next to it that caused the reaction.

Buana had it too last year, he needed a shot from the vet. It was all over his body :( (different than his mosquito allergie)

And I agree, I think a lot of B's give reaction at some plants, espessially in the spring or summer….

  • Yes, we have had this problem with Querk. Sometimes it is in reaction to mosquitos first making an appearance. But I think he also has some airborne allergies..it always seems like we see this in the spring, when the trees and grass are starting to pollenate. Also, allergies can compound…so if an individual is fighting some airborne allergies, if they get bitten by an insect that doesn't usually trigger a response, during the allergies season it can. We usually do some benadryl, and it resolves itself within a few hours.

    Thanks for your reaction!
Benadryl, can we buy that in a farmacy or at the vet?

  • It is a human medication here, but vets use it also. I don't want to give you the wrong dosage, so check the internet, I believe you can find it there. We can get it at any pharmacy or grocery store, even. I can't remember the chemical name for it..but again, I think you could find that on the internet. Sorry I couldn't help more :(

  • How is your b today?

O no!!! I?m so happy with your reaction!
I?m going to look at the internet what the name is, so we can buy it here!
It?s nice to know there is someting that can help!!!!
    So, Thanks!!! :)

Edit: I looked for Benadryl on the internet, and in Holland it has a different name, I can't find that BUT I found some english sites about Benadryl and there are some "other" names (from the ingrietients) and so i found some netherlands sites about allergic reactions and dogs, and some self help actions. :D

    How is your b today?

Well, it look likes it's getting less big, it's not gone yet. he acts the same as he always does and we are less scared… :o

  • I didn't give anything to Tillo. With him it lasted for 2-3 hours and it didn't bother him.

  • YEAHHHH Yesterday in the evening, his bumps looked smaller!
When it became bed time, there were all gone… !!!! :D:D:D:D

I want to thank you all voor the advice and the support!

  • Glad he is better:D

@elbrant said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: divisive I guess I'm a dreamer.... but I believe that adults can have discussions and opinions without resorting to name calling and rude remarks. Your input is valuable. Thanks, because it's become a religion as soon as you speak against it people get so offended. The last 3 years has shown that quite clearly @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: Another friend's dog has a swollen leg at the vaccination site of his booster which is not resolving I"m sorry to hear about your friend's loss and understand the concern about the other friend's swollen leg. I had a similar experience, one of my dog's (not doodle) had a grossly swollen leg following a vet visit. The Vet told me it was cancer and I opted to let her go. Month's later I read online that it could have been the result of an allergic reaction. Please advise your friend to research possible answers before she makes a decision. Will do, a lot of the medication/vaccines cause inflammatory responses so it could just be that, it's still not nice for the dog to have that experience @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: dry food ... suffering from malnutrition omgosh! That is so scary!! I doubt the big manufacturers would ever allow a real study to see the light of day, but I would love to see one done. Just the thought makes me want to keep feeding my girl human grade foods. Yeah the same here, her research indicated that raw chicken wings were the optimal food and contain pretty much everything needed. I guess if you think of some of the processed crap they have in supermarkets trading as food for humans you can imagine how low the bar can go for pet food.

@Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!
