  • Hi all. I am a new member of the forum. We brought Daisy, a Basenji and Blue Heeler mix, last May when she was 6 weeks old. She's quite a joy. But, she's also aggressive with strangers, barking nonstop when they arrive. She doesn't lunge at them or really even growl, she just barks. She joined our family and our pet, Sassy, a Westie mix about 14 years old. She and Sassy get along fine unless Sassy is worried about us. It's obvious who the alpha is. Daisy is the softest animal I've ever felt, and as I teenager, I even worked for a furrier (please forgive me, as I forgive myself). She's an amazing, highly-strung, non-stop dog who seems to understand everything we say. She's amazing.

Thanks for the warm greetings from fans and for the advice.

  • Hi Rita!!! I have a Basenji/Whippet mix and we live in Knoxville. My husband and I lived in Nashville back in the mid 1990's, but now we are back in K-town. My Hollie can bark too, since she is mixed, but she also barooos. She is very protective and extremely leary of strangers. She too will bark at someone she doesn't know well AND some people she does know. She is strange, but fits in our family just fine!!

Welcome to the forum!!! Glad to see another Tennessean on board!!!

  • Hi, Jen. I'm showing my Basenji ignorance, but what is a barooo? If it's all the talking our dog does, then I know what it is! She tries to carry on conversations with us!
I'm thrilled to have a Knoxvillian to talk with. So many questions, so little time.

  • Hollie's basenji yodel comes out as a Barrroooooo sound. She doesn't do the Basenji scream (thank goodness), but she does make some interesting noises, including bark bark barking!!! She'll even bark at our neighbors, odd little dog, but we love her!!

Does you basenji mix make any odd noises?? Hollie's at one time soundly alot like the bluetick hound howl!! :p

At 18 months and 7lbs I very much doubt that he's got Basenji in him but who knows. It doesn't matter,- he's a delightfulchap and good to have you both on here. Looking forward to more pictures.

Great to have you and Gizzmo here with us. I can't wait to see some pictures! Regarding potty/pee training, do you have a command word to use to let Gizzmo know it's his pee time? We use 'hurry hurry'. Just remember that he'll need to pee after sleeping, eating and play times. In a thread awhile back, it was said that a dog at 5 months 'should' be able to hold their pee for 6 hours. The rule for that is taking their age and adding 1, hence Gizzmo could hold for 6 hours. At 5 months, I was setting the alarm for around 5:30 in the morning to get up and let Kipawa out. Eventually he was the one that let me know that he didn't want to be woken at 5:30 a.m. So, I decided to trust him, and he didn't let me down. No accidents. Gizzmo will be there in no time. Time flies when you have a basenji! :)

Wow, that was pretty awesome of you to take care of the sick pup and bring her back to health! No, my cats are not sphynx. One is your typical house cat and the others are himalayans. We are praying that our next puppy is healthy and normal as we have not had much luck with dogs here lately.

@longshot: Yes, I would love to adopt him myself… but I am a first-time dog owner, and I am a little intimidated by the reputation of the Basenji --even though in this case he is 1/2 Pug which has an "easier" reputation. Are they sure he is a basenji mix or are they just guessing based on the curly tail and erect ears? He looks more like a Chi mix to me. I just found out on Monday the new "hybrid craze" is the "chug" a Chi x Pug. http://www.flickr.com/photos/troynielsen/2236562915/

Hi cmd - My name is Jill and I am the recipient of a rescued male puppy, Duke, who I have since learned (after 4 months) is a Basenji, now 8 mos. old. I love this forum, because I have learned alot about this breed. I now realize that Basenjis are a challenge, but I believe the more I know, the easier he will be for me and my family. There is no turning back now because we are in love with Duke . Select "Bonnie Bell" a 10 month old female (from Emerant's the Instigator and Select in my Pocket) and "Ramsey" Geheep's Klassic Jim a 11 year old male (Klassic Eye of the Tiger and Baruh's Jessica Hahnd) Wish I knew where Duke's blood lines run. You must be proud. I am new at this and I love to read the stories and learn that I am not crazy! I am glad you're a veteran as are many forum friends here. I love the stories about the Basenji's extraordinary body of energy and their purposes. Can you guess why my handle is Crazy Duke? I can tell you about some unbelievable stories about Duke since bringing him home already. (That's why I'm glad to find this forum - Duke's not crazy, he's a Basenji.) She was an awesome dog and was very very loyal. I am so sorry for your loss. But the only comfort we have is knowing she had a great life being in your life. I've lost many doggies over the rainbow to squirrel heaven. I hope you'll share some more stories and help us new-B's here on the Basenji Forum.
