Fearless B afraid of balloons

Basenji Talk

  • My B is pretty much fearless. He loves playing with the vacuum, he doesn't flinch if you play chase and run at him. He also loves being around when I use the hairdryer. Anyway, my friend brought a helium filled balloon to my apartment for my birthday. I put it in the corner and the dog didn't notice it all night but as soon as it started drifting around the living room he took notice. He wouldn't go near it and if I touched it he would take off and hide in my bedroom. I wanted to see if he was really frightened or if he was just not use to it so I had him sit down next it and I had him touch it and smell it to see that it would not harm him. He was not a fan! I clipped it on his collar for about 10 seconds and he went tearing around the living room trying to run away from it. I couldn't stop laughing! I found out that my b is not so fearless. I didn't think a balloon could cause that much terror!

  • Then what did he do? Not sure that really was a very nice thing to do….

  • I took it off of him and had to hide the balloon. After that he wouldn't leave my lap. It probably wasn't the nicest but it was only on him long enough to make a loop around the living room. I guess no more balloons in my house. He got his revenge though, it scared me when I came around a corner in the dark!

  • Our Puggle Chase is afraid of them too, I babysat once and took the little girl to Chuck E. Cheese, we brought home a mylar helium balloon and Chase kept barking at it, I had to hide it in the bathroom. I got one for my Birthday two weeks ago and thought he would be over it from the last time but he just kept barking at it. My DH did the same thing you did but he tied it to Zahra and she ran around with it on her collar. I was not happy about that and made him stop, she was having fun chasing it but poor Chase was terrified. I guess Zahra is fearless but our Puggle Chase is not.

A campsite would be good for them to roam around. When we take on vacation, I also make sure to visit any local pet cafe so they could eat food we usually don't cook.

Hmmm… JazzysMom-- it is our planet, yes but that's about the extent to which I agree with you. I don't think pollution is as much of a problem for wildlife as habitat destruction is... An example- my parents own 25 acres in the mountains. I went to visit them this past weekend and I know their neighbor has beavers on his property. I was so excited to have a chance to see them up close; on my last visit I only got to see the pencil shaped tree trunks and their house- but this time I really wanted to wait for a siting. Unfortunately I found out that they had created a dam that flooded the property so the land owner had them trapped and then killed. For what?? Doing what beavers do?! The land owner has acres upon acres of just woods and lakes and streams. Did he really NEED to remove the beavers because they were doing THEIR thing? I don't know. I just think that was unnecessary. That is the kind of thing that irritates me. Why is it OUR land and not theirs? They had probably been in those woods for ages... but no, it's OUR land now. But they were wrecking OUR land and OUR gardens and OUR things... And sure, the environment changes and makes food sources scarce from year to year but what about all the roads they have to cross to find the shrinking food supplies? They're bound to get squished with any step they take. And heaven forbid they come within 30 feet of a house... PEST we scream! Quick, call someone to take it out!! We're the greedy ones. Want, want, want... it's all ours! None for you! If we wanted to 'share' the land/environment/planet we'd be more like the Native Americans...IMO of course. (Not trying to attack anyone, but I have a BIG heart for creatures who cannot help themselves)

They are called Diastix. Some drug stores still carry them, but many have to special order them. You can find them online though.
