I have an alpha female basenji and brought a newborn into our family. I was in the hospital for four days (my in laws stayed with dog and horse), when we came home, we had my Mom bring her new boyfriend. He was a great distraction, but also allowed me some alone time with Cricket. When they left, she noticed the baby in the bassinet and was a bit concerned.
She adapted to the baby, but I don't leave them alone just in case. Cricket is not nearly as jealous as she was, now that he drops food for her at the table, but she did get a bit jealous for a few weeks.
While I was pregnant, I was told that 'the test' was to play baby crying videos on YouTube. How the dog reacts will tell you how they will interact with the baby. Cricket beat the crap out of my phone when I tried… So not a great test! 🙂

im currently buying my first basenji! i am very excited but have a question. it is going to be an australiian breed. are they the same size as other or are they bigger than standard size..
Keoki's sire is an Australian import. It's been a long time since I've seen him, and as I didn't know at the time that I'd have one of his puppies some day I didn't really take great notice {except that he is a gorgeous boy}. I don't recall him being particularly large. {Khani? ]
Keoki isn't an unusually large boy either.

I know Tad also, I got my Tayda from him a few years ago. He and his partner Joseph are a lovely pair….

You'll soon see… the basenji world is really small....

The best advise you can get is from Tad…. .... main thing is to be consistant, crate train, work on house training... and above all have a sense of humor....

So exciting to be getting a puppy! Congrats! Keep us posted and we will of course want lots and lots of pics!! We all adore puppy pics!!
My added advice is: Love them unconditionally, just as they do you. Forgive easily… don't worry- it will be hard to stay mad at something so cute!! And spoil incessantly! mwhahahah!!

Keoki's sire (Buka) is an Aussie import. He is good-sized, though I haven't wicketed him. But I know he is one of our biggest dog, probably 17.5-18" tall, but very well proportioned.
As Pat said, it doens't matter where they are from as to their size. I've seen some really small Aussie dogs, just as some American dogs can be really big and some can be really little.
