If you belong to Facebook please join the group "Basenji Puppies/Puppys/Puppy’s: Get Educated BEFORE you BUY". You will learn from the group posts and information why the two breeders mentioned above are not considered "reputable" as well as a whole raft of other breeders considered "disreputable". You will also learn what constitutes a reputable breeder. A non-refundable deposit is a red flag, not being able to locate sire and dame test results on OFA is another, contracts where the breeder does not accept full responsibility of their pups or dogs if something goes wrong or you can no longer take care of him/her. Reputable does not mean they have to be a show breeder but usually they are. Not all puppies are meant for the show ring but their breeder should be breeding to the standard as if they were. I would say that if one had planned to get a pup before this all occurred, then perhaps it would be good timing, as it would give one the opportunity of spending more time with the pup in the crucial early days. Of course things will change and the routine will be different, but there are ways to ease into the new schedule so it isn't an abrupt shift from always being there to suddenly being absent.

I live in Culver city and WBL is right, they have no dog pound. They do use the Carson Shelter and I would think a B would have already been rescued from there by Karen from the So Cal Basenji Rescue.

Thanks for the site.. We are looking to adopt an older B (or two). I read over the info, we are adopting for those reason exactly. We not get as many years with them but it is quality not quanity as tough as that maybe when the time comes. You can't live your life thinking about the END!

When I did rescue for BRAT - I didn't even charge anthing for expenses. When I"ve done rescue for BCOA or just because a basenji needed a new home - I've only charged anything if there were unique circumstances. I do take a 'deposit' of somewhere between 100 - 200. and place on a 2-3 week trial - if it works I return the money. I sometimes suggest a donation to a rescue organization. If I was doing LOTS of rescue though and had lots of expenses for health and transport - I would have to charge. I just laugh that a 'high volumn breeder' that I see her website - charges 3 times what the rest of us reputable breeders charge for her pets - oh well that's how it goes.

If you don't find a home for her, you can also try try Medfly Brigade/Basenji Rescue of SoCal. There is a link to their web site at the BRAT site. They are in Acton, CA.
