Forehead licker

  • Now this isn't a behavior I particularly mind, but before bedtime my pup has to lick my forehead, and I mean LICK my forehead until it's "clean". She absolutely will not leave me alone until I let her give give me some "kisses" on the forehead.

I talked with a friend and he said it's got to do with pack mentality…all dogs clean and preen each other before settling down, and this is her way of acknowledging me as part of the pack. Sounds reasonable, and like I said, it's not a horrible thing that she's doing, but I wonder if anyone else out there has a licker and thinks that makes sense.

  • Makes sense to me - The wild kingdom of animal communication is bizzare. I have a nose and lip licker - eww yuck at bed time! I wish Duke was a forehead licker . . .

  • Hollie's BIG on ears… especially from the back seat of the car while you are driving!! LOL

  • Oh, Shadow has a 'licky nose' thing. When you eat something he wants you to lick his nose so he can taste what you ate. If you don't lick his nose he practically sticks his nose in your mouth-YUK!

  • Chance likes to lick jeans. I dunno why but they must tast good to him.

  • We have a forehead licker too!!

  • @Vanessa626:

Oh, ugh..that drives me crazy. We had a B living with us for awhile, Bella's brother Bubba Roi. He was a DEDICATED pants licker…so much so that everyone who met him, remembered that about him! So now, in our whole family, anytime a dog licks your pants we say 'knock it off Bubba'.... ;)

Oh. Please tell me you don't actually lick the dogs nose . . . .

  • The first time with a clean nose yes, after he licks his nose, no. Hey, there are worse things. Especially after you watch some of them eat poop!

  • Yesterday Penny and Jasper killed a large bunny in their yard first thing in the morning. They both looked like something wild coming off a fresh kill and required baths.

Needless to say, they can keep the kisses and licking to themselves for a while till that visual memory goes away.

    I don't usually do that…but I would ;)

I dunno, you get more germs from a lot of different places than you would from a dog's nose...

Plus....germ exposure gives you a better immune system :)

LOL< maybe, but I'm pretty particular where I put my tongue! :D

  • We used to let the dogs lick/kiss us till the started nursing their anal glands for hours on end.

Our other likes to eat dog, bunny what ever poop, vomit so that ended kisses from him

    Dogs are so disgusting sometimes

  • I do not allow ANY licking. I can't stand it. Thankfully Dashy is not interested in licking but my beagle tries a lot. YUCK!

Don't every buy a basenji from me..gggg…. all of mine are confirmed lickers, some to the point of driving me crazy....:D Most the time I don't mind.... however when the tongue starts sticking to the skin, that is about enough...:D

  • Sahara is a pants licker, why I don't know. She will also lick my ears, especially if I ask her for kisses, which doesn't bother me. She likes to lick my legs, Daddy's too at times. We see it as grooming her pack, any one know why they do this? I think it is all part of taking care of their other pack members!

  • Just a side note here-I used to eat mud cakes when I was little out on the farm-so licking a dog's nose is nothing to mud, bugs, ect.

  • I have some trained to give kisses, I like them in most cases…......I just pick and choose my spots....some times are certainly better than others.:D

  • I used to call Max an obsessive compulsive licker….he had licking OCD. He did not like giving kisses on the lips though--I really do think he didn't want my germs :) Tyler and Zoey, however, do not lick people--at all and do not give kisses. But Zoey will always lick Tyler's feet after he's been outside on the damp grass--it's very cute.

  • our girl when she greats you, gives you tiny little kisses on your arm.

I was a little pre-occupied earlier today, and Doodle displayed her displeasure at my constant delays... how? She got up on the sofa and did this little prancing-dancing thing. Like she was saying, "haha, look at me misbehaving". LOL oh yeah.... if that is her "breaking bad", I'm in trouble, she's got my heart!

@Saving so nice to hear there's other people with the same problem! We have been giving regular baths to our b, so I don't know if that really helped or not. Anyways, it took a while for me to bring Nova again to the dog park, because I was a bit afraid the same situation would happen again. I was there a couple of days ago, and no one tried to hump her. (I must say all dogs had same age approx.) Thank you for your comment replies! :)

Sparkle Barkle came into heat in April. Logan went nuts! I was traveling so my wife was saddled with the mayhem. Mayhem doesn't begin to describe the situation. Sparkle should be coming in again within days, I hope, and unfortunately, he won't get any love this time either. He's gonna be a massive handful for at least a MONTH. I'm not traveling this time, so it's all on me. Cross your fingers for Tri females. I want three!

Neutering is not going to help - training is. But a good trainer will train YOU to deal with the dog. If a trainer can get him to behave but you can't - there is little to be gained from paying out money. This is something you should never have allowed to happen, but since it has, I think you should deal with it and @JENGOSMonkey has given you a good idea to start you off. Withdrawing treats is a good idea, but also, get up and walk away. He could be biting to get attention and therefore you withdraw the attention at the first sign of a bite, with a firm NO.

IMO it is a myth that Basenjis cannot have good manners on a walk. Yes, great if you can do off leash, but when circumstances dictate that a leash is necessary then walking calmly without a lot of drama and pulling should be achievable. Personally I do not like long lines or flex leashes. Or allowing dogs to eat whatever they find on the ground, which can in some cases earn you a trip to the vet or worse. Like most dogs, Basenjis are not overly discriminant about what they will ingest. A short leash and being observant can protect them from unwelcome outcomes. Mental exercise will also go a long way with any dog. But one should have a definite opinion about who is running the show, and it should not be the dog....they are quite willing to take up the position should you abdicate.
