Another rescue

    We added another rescue to our family. We adopted Sawyer from BRAT about 1 month ago. He was listed on BRAT as "Benji" but that name didn't fit him. He is one year old. He is potty trained but not leash trained. He is so much bigger and stronger than Wyatt was when I was training him, it is definitely a work out trying to walk him. He definitely has more strong Basenji traits than Wyatt. He can jump the 4 foot fence (we are accelerating our plans to have a 6 foot installed for the entire yard), he grooms himself, Wyatt, me, strangers…..:p and he is very vocal. In fact if he is around a barking dog, he will make bark ing noises. Wyatt on the other hand is almost completly silent. The only sound he has made is when I took Sawyer for a walk and left Wyatt home and I thought I heard a rooster crowing.....but it was Wyatt:confused:
    Wyatt and Sawyer get along very well but can be a handful, which I completely expected (Wyatt is almost 8 months and Sawyer is 1 year).
    I am looking forward to the challenges and rewards!

    I am wishing you good luck. It is nerve wracking waiting to hear if you are approved. I was so nervous that they wouldn't get along when they met, but they did so well together.

    Congratulations on both your kids! They are beautiful. The only problem I've encountered with rescues (I've had 2 B rescues and a german shepherd mix) is that I tend to me too permissive with them because every time I look in their little eyes–I think about the time they had to spend in a shelter. The two Bs I have now were actually quite obedient when I adopted them--and I'm really trying hard to keep them that way :)

    @fernrn1 Fern - so happy to see that you’re still on the forum! The stubbornness is definitely a basenji characteristic. My B will also stop and not move - we’ll have a stand-off - people must see us and think I’m crazy. I’ve had to physically pick her up and move her a few feet to re-direct her. Smart is an understatement - it’s scary to see how smart they are.They have the attitude of “my way or no way and what’s in it for me.” I look forward to seeing more photos of Woody and getting updates on her progress and antics! 🐕❤️🐾

You almost expect that in rural areas, but we lived in the Woodlands, which was a planned development north of Houston. Here there is a "service" which picks up dogs, mostly from the Central Valley (CA), and takes them to NorCal, the Pacific NW, and BC. Seems as though spay/neuter has been so successful there that there are more homes than dogs. Here, in addition to no kill shelters, including a program for pets of abused women), the City "Pound" is super nice, with rooms complete with couches for the dogs and cats (makes them more adoptable), courtesy of a bequest by Joan Kroc (McDonalds).

    Okay he's cute, I certainly wouldn't be surprised if a mix... but without a DNA test, no way to really tell. Barking... well basenjis bark, but for most it is a single Boof.. pause... booof. Not the bow wow wow rhythm of other dogs. Oh shedding... they shed but nothing like my other breeds. We get a shed out in early summer. Otherwise, unless sick, not much shedding. I have only had 3 basenjis... they all hated water, one so much that getting her to potty if the ground is we is a serious issue.

    When they are with their littermates and any adults, during play when they bite to hard, the one getting bite will scream at the biter… and adults will strongly correct... this is when they learn "soft" bite... so sounds like your Rocco did not get this... This happens if removed from the adults and/or other littermates too early... So as stated, all play stops... also, I suggest that if the bite is too hard, scream/yell very loud and then stop all play
