• No, basenjis are very clean by nature. His trying to lick up the urine is because he is trying to clean up the mess. He would be alot happier if you took him outside to potty where he wouldn't feel like he made a mess in his living area.

  • Lots of B's do this bile thing. I believe there's a thread discussion on vomiting bile. You may want to do a search for more info.

  • I had a poodle mix that I was given by a friend's niece. I fed Sugardoggie Nutro food. She had an upset stomach alot, throwing up the bile in her tummy. I switched to another food (trying something new), and during the New Food time, she didn't throw up. Once I put her back on Nutro, she started to throw up again. She did not throw up EVERYtime she ate, so it took us a while to catch on… but I think the Nutro was upsetting her stomach. She is now at the Rainbow Bridge and we have our furbaby B mix Hollie (she doesn't get the Nutro).

  • I have 2 B's and one on the way. Talking in the show ring, to other breeders and experience has taught me that this is normal. I try not to let mine go too long without something in their belly-otherwise they will throw up.

  • I was just coming to the forum to search for the same topic. Our 15mo old has been throwing up the last month or so. She is the light eater of the 3 and would gladly offer her food to the others. I'd guess she throws up every other day or every third day (unless I'm not seeing it happen outside) and mostly in the morning or after she's woken up from a nap. Once she started to while she was asleep. Poor thing. Before I called the vet to get another "lets do blood work…." response, I thought I'd check here (don't get me wrong, we love our vet, but they sure love lab work!). We'll try the biscuit in the evening approach and see how that works.

  • Everydog is different too. Shadow basically throws up every day or every other day. Sugar may throw up once a week or sometimes more often.

  • CMD, is the throw up bile like, yellow? Or is she throwing up food?

  • @Quercus:

usually food. I started giving her biscuits throughout the day and she hasn't thrown up since last week. Again, its been nice out too so its possible I just did see her.

  • IMO, throwing up food is more serious than throwing up bile. The latter is usually what we see with the empty tummy syndrome. But if they are throwing up food, there might be something more serious going on. Could be the flu, or a partial intestinal blockage. If it doesn't clear up soon, I would definitely get her in for a check.

  • Well I fed my dog that ceasar wet food cause I couldn't get to the spurmarket (yes I'm a bad mom) plus we fed him some of our fast food hamburger yesturday and today he vomited bile. I used to feed my toy poodle mighty dog and he didn't have a problem (now I'm the wiser), could this just be a B thing?

I've got a call into the vet. She threw up again this morning. It was mostly liquified food. Its odd, some times she starts the whole smiling face look but if I catch her in time and pet her, she often stops. I noticed this when I grabbed her and ran with her to the door once…. maybe she just likes to barf on the carpet only.

  • can dogs get a stomach virus from humans? my B has been throwing up though I think it might be due to a new treat i started giving him. I am going to stop and see if it clears up. he throws up food but today he threw up immediatly following the treat. Other then that he seems fine.

  • Jazzy has thrown up in the morning a couple of times – she is so awesome, she tries to wait until I get the back door open and then bolts out to throw up in the yard 🙂 -- anyway, this is yellow bile-y stuff , but there are chunks of the new treats I've been giving them at bedtime.

Actually, it's Carry-outs, which I give them every night in their crates, but a different flavor. I usually get the beef or cheese ones, but last week I accidentally grabbed pizza flavor. They are even shaped differently.

Once was okay, but this is now twice. She won't be getting any more of those treats.

  • yeah champ does the same..they r really smart. i was just wondering at what point do u consider the throwing up seriouse enough for the vet?

When they don't eat/drink or everything you give them is coming up for more the 12 to 24 hours…. you must be careful about dehyration....

  • thanks, i guess it's just the snacks
