  • THAT is truly adorable! I'm sure they'll work it out and be best buds!

  • Yeah - looks like they will get along great - soon as they work out the kinks. They look adorable together.

  • Vanessa those pictures are SO cute!! Such precious "critters" you have!

  • You have to think if a B was going to hang out with another animal…...it would be a cat. They'd have so much in common and lot's to talk about.:D

Very cute pictures Vanessa, glad Chance has a buddy!;)

  • Not my jack, MAN if i let him go, i think hes just rEALLY curious, but he'll take chunks of fur out of Jack the Cat, my neighbors cat…sooo sad

  • Hello- I'm new to the site :-) I have a 6 year old Basenji and 2 ferrets that are all the best of friends. My Basenji is also in love with my cat, when she comes in my Basenji (Pearl) thinks she has to run over to her and try to get her to play with her. The cat hates her most of the time. Pearl is pretty clever at getting attention as well. Sometimes when she isn't getting enough attention she will run to the cat and aggrivate it just enough to get swat at, then come to one of us crying. If we don't pay attention to her still, she will do it again. I have a few audio clips of her, but no video :( Maybe some day. I should get a picture of Pearl and the ferrets together. I was told absolutely not to trust her around little critters but she loves them to death. She even goes for walks with them, and will growl at anyone that comes near them. :-)

giggling evily…I *bet she loves them....she doesn't want anybody near them, becuase she is growing them fat and tasty ;)

    Just kidding...welcome to the board!

  • In any other case, that would be my first impression. However she is extremely protective over these little guys, even cuddles up and sleeps with them. She's also our little tattletale–The ferrets disappear we tell her to go find them. She'll tell us exactly where they are. It's cute.

    ROFL!! :D :)

  • Vanessa626, our B and our cat act like they hate each other (cat ambushes the B when rounding corners; B chases cat for playing with toys) but we catch them sleeping together all the time.

    It's the whole love/hate relationship. =-)

  • It's a constant love/hate relationship between our cat and Basenji. We have had to "modify" our home by installing 4 ft baby gates. Thank god the cat hasn't figured out how to jump over this yet :)
Any time the cat darts through the house I grab him and put him on the other side of the gate for some "time out time" he will sit there and howl.
I have to admit though…in the beginning I thought this that it wasn't play. They looked like they wanted to do damage to eachother but now I see that it really is play but it does get out of hand. Seperating your house is a really good thing to do.

  • Those pictures were very cute. Our one cat, Amber, looks exactly the same. Dash can be too rough with Amber so when she feels overwhelmed she runs into the basement until Dash calms down. But they commonly sleep together. Our other cat, Giz, is older and Dash doesn't bother him at all. I think it is because Giz doesn't run.

My Rosa wrote the "How To Be a Basenji DIVA" manuscript - as many rules there were, it was so worthy of a 'script' at the end! She, and all her offspring, had spring and fall heats, but I only bred her once in the spring. That produced one puppy, my Captain. She always ruled over her pups, except when Captain came along - she did what HE said when he was about 2 weeks old!

on the heat of the sun???? Basenji love the heat. If you had a fireplace, it will be within inches of the hot logs.

@lovedogs @eeeefarm said in should I get a basenji?: wait until the time is right, even if you really, really want a dog now I agree... with everyone. Sometimes you just need to accept that (no matter how much you want a dog/car/kid/house) you aren't quite ready for it. I waited 5 years before I brought my Basenji home and it was probably the most adult thing I've ever done. I was still in recovery from a spinal injury and knew that I wouldn't be able to provide (her) the exercise she would want and require. Waiting made all the difference in the world. Whan I was finally ready, the most perfect little girl was ready for me. Don't fret about it. You can read, research, consider all of your options, and really prepare yourself. (Don't look at puppy pictures online! You'll fall in love without even meeting the pup(s) and it will pull at your heartstrings.) Remind yourself that "one day you will have a Basenji", just not today.

I have a general question. Does anybody elses Basenji not like to be picked up. Ours sometimes loves it, and sometimes not. Also sometimes she runs up to dogs as quiet as can be and plays, and than other times she makes a squeeling noise, and people are afraid she is picking a fight with their dog. But I think shes just talking. She squeels at our new Whippet puppy, and loves to play with her and is as gentle as can be, considering the Whippet puppy is really rough on my poor Basenji baby girl. does anyone know what the squeeling means. The baroo I get she does that all the time. The squeeling is confusing.

Both Abby and Cooper love my cat, love to chase him. He's pretty smart though he's know how to get away from them. We have our formal dining room blocked off with baby gates so he can go in there and eat and not be bothered by the dogs. Plus apparently Cooper looooooves cat food. Then again Cooper loves all food.

Yes, early socialization and positive experiences is the best way to go. I think the most important thing about puppy kindergarten is that it is positive based and focuses on socialization with both people and dogs. Some basenji don't necessarily do well with the small dogs and other love them. Sophie was always the best with the new pups of any size in her puppy class, she just had phenomenal dog language and would make herself as small as possible and go at their speed. What you want to be careful about is people who have already formed a preconceived notion of basenji behavior. My mom's first puppy class instructor always expected her boy to be aggressive even though he never showed any aggression and was always very appropriate in his interactions. I crate puppies next to the bed while housebreaking and it works fine. I have always used a large stuffed toy in the crate and this year used SnugglePuppies, they were wonderful. The pup snuggled right up to warmth and fell asleep, provided we did a good job of tiring him out for the night. I got my first basenji while I was in Grad school and lived in an apartment. It is doable as long as you are willing to make sure they get enough exercise and mental stimulation.
