Male basenji needs a Home

Basenji Rescue
  • Came across this posting on PetFinder: Young purebred male basenji named Apollo (will be 1 yr on 11/2/22) in Houston, Texas area. He was surrendered by his owners in July. He is in danger of being euthanized if not adopted soon. Here is the link:

  • @Kembe - Was BRAT contacted? That would be the best place to go if the breeder is not known... and for sure this pup needs to be DNA tested for Fanconi and PRA at the very least. Looks like he is a carrier for Fanconi and already has an issue with the one eye....sigh... wonder what happened to that one eye?.....

  • @tanza
I don’t know if BRAT has been contacted. Should I send this link to BRAT?

  • @Kembe Yes, I would forward this to BRAT. Even before I finished reading the entire description I knew he’d been raised outside (warehouse in this instance). Very disappointing, but I don’t know all the circumstances. He looks and sounds like he could be nurtured into a being a really good dog. He’s young, full of energy and needs to learn some rules/manners. It sounds like he’s capable of learning per the foster. Hope someone picks him up.

  • I just sent a message to BRAT. Hopefully they’ll be able to help this young boy. I’m going to assume he’s from a “backyard breeder” because otherwise he would have been returned to his breeder. This is so sad that this should happen to this basenji. I feel so bad for him.

  • Update: I received this response from BRAT:

“Thanks for your report on this purebred, Apollo. We have been alerted to this dog and one of our administrators said today at 17:36:

Saw this on FB - they want $750 for it. He is with a rescue. I think we have already seen this dog and they didn't want our help. Guess we could check with them anyway in case no one is willing to pay that much.

BRAT doesn’t have the resources to pay for dogs. We can only hope they decide to give him up to us but I wouldn’t count on it. I seriously doubt he will be euthanized. Sometimes rescue groups will place a Basenji in a home and the dog comes back to them and then they contact us.”

  • @Kembe - Thanks for the update

Make sure your basenji gets along with the new one. My basenji George did not always get along with other dogs and especially other basenjis. We found George and his "wife" and their puppies. We found homes for most of them but kept two of the puppies and the dad, George. The two puppies and the dad did fight on occasion and it was not a good time. We ended up giving up the puppies , who were with us for a couple of years since they killed one of our cats and another of our dogs. I LOVED my basenji George, my love of my life dog, what a personality but I would not have more than one. Maybe the females are better behaved than the males as George and the one of the puppies were male. Did not get along. Your Vinny looks a lot like my George. George passed away on Feb 14 2018 at the age of around 20 years old. We found him in 1999 and he died in 2018. My husband and I say he is the one dog we will have the best stories on as we grow old. We rescue animals so he was one of many dogs. He certainly stole my heart- I miss him so much. Good luck in your search Helen

Dear Debra, Thanks for the notes and looking up options nearby. We had already written to the Swiss basenji email address, but didn't get a response. We'd be willing to take him to nearby countries in Europe for the right fit. Perhaps now we will try writing to the other countries' basenji groups. He is such a lovely dog, and we want a good situation for him. He has come a long way and is much calmer now that he's a bit older! Cheers

Taz has been in foster care through the Midwest Dog Resuce Network since he was turned over by the breeder (I believe around 8 months old). He had two sisters in foster care with him for a short time but they were adopted quickly. They were all shown on the BRAT website but were not evaluated by, or in the care of BRAT. He is such a handsome boy, I had given some serious thought to adopting him until they updated his profile to say that "he likes to be the boss". My female B absolutely has to be the boss of all other dogs (!) so I knew this combo wouldn't work out :( Here is the link to the organization caring for him: http://midwestdogrescuenetwork.com/default.aspx
