This is a late answer but for someone who might read this in the future we will post it anyway. The risk is much higher to the animal and it certainly raises the risk the animal bleeding out. There is also more swelling. We were going to have our Show Basenji spayed this year. She went into heat slightly early and our vet said that we should wait until after the heat was over before he felt comfortable doing the spay for the reasons mentioned.
Puppy Heat

Nyla just had her first heat and bled for about a month. Now her nipples are slightly swollen and I notice some light light blue shading at times. Is this normal? I see things about faking a pregnancy and stuff but should we see a vet?

Totally normal.... false pregnancy is very normal for Basenji bitches.... it will last about 3 to 4 weeks.
-
@tanza do you know if there any correlation with repeated false pregnancies and increased risk of pyomentra?
-
@jkent - None, Pyometra can happen to any intact dog.... and has nothing to do with false pregnancies.... at least not in my experience. My two girls right now will be 12 in December and January and have had false pregnancies every year (with the exception of when C-Me was bred and had a litter that year). This has been the same with all my bitches over many, many years...

@tanza is the blue coloring under the nipples normal then? that's what is scaring me the most
-
@basenjinyla - Yes, normal...
-
Nothing strange is happening here at all. Discharge over a full month can happen - but it is normally only once a year. Pyometra can hit any bitch - regardless of false or real pregnancies.
-
how is she now?

much better!!!
