Washing Basenji's

Basenji Talk

  • My Basenji's wash each other, ears, eyes, nothing that shocking there.

A few of ours actually lick or wash each others teeth and the inside of each others mouth.

We do brush their teeth, we must not be doing a satisfactory job.

Any others with mutiples ever notice this?

  • OOOO! Must be a crazy dog thing. Licking things that have smells. Well - another reason to have more than one Basenji. Maybe you won't have to brush their teeth anymore. Never heard of this activity, except on a "Funniest Animals" video, I saw a bird picking the teeth of its human. Another video, a hamster picked it's human's teeth. EXTREMELY GROSS!!

  • Out two dogs constantly clean each other especially each others ears and eyes and every other body part, but i have yet to see them clean each others teeth! that is funny!

  • Oh Good Lord no! Our dogs would kill each other with bad breath if they licked inside each other's mouths. We do have one that will happily try to lick inside our mouth's though!

Every one of our dogs seems to have gotten genes for bad gingivitis. We brush, but with not much effect. I think it may be something about our water, or their food, or something…I just got some Oxyfresh...anybody ever tried it?

I don't do the brushing but I do know the wife uses two products when she does their teeth. One is flavored with something(chicken/beef), they love it and get in line for a brushing…..the second part isn't as popular with them and it is called Oxy something.

A couple of products my vet recommended were– Maxi/Guard oral cleansing gel. You put a drop on either side of the mouth on the gums, and my vet seemed to think it helped keep Max's gums stay healthy between cleanings. Then he also started using OraVet which is a paste that you put on the gums/teeth. He would put this on after cleaning the teeth--then you put it on at home (once a week I think) afterwards. Both were supposed to keep plaque from building up on the teeth and help the gums. But I wonder if dogs are like people. They say that gingivitis is caused by buildup on the tongue. I wonder if anyone has ever tryied any of those tongue scraping tools on a dog?? I was lucky if I could even get the two drops of Maxi/Guard gel into Max's mouth. :D

  • Sahara loves the products that she chews on that keep the teeth clean. She has never had bad breath, and I would know as she is always close to me. Does this develop as they age?

The only time one of my senior dogs had noticeably bad breath (other than the normal "doggie breath" which I never considered to be bad breath) was at the end of her life because of her kidneys failing. Other than that, I've never had a senior dog get bad breath (but they always had their teeth cleaned regularly at the vets–and maintained at home).

I did some investigating Andrea. The flavored paste(Chicken) we use first came from the Vet….......they just love that stuff! The B's don't like the Oxyfresh that much, but she finishes up with that.

  • I wash my dogs teeth every day. On beginning was hard…they do not like this-however I can this make. Care about teeth is very important-I use paste-STOMAGEL and Petosan.

Totally agree with Pat. I have two intact female B's. They are NOT the best of friends and have to be watched constantly. They are never alone together. Yes, they've gotten into knock-down drag-out fights. I've been in the ring with slit throats, chewed up ears, scabs, etc. Not a good idea at all. I can control it simply because I watch them constantly and when they start to show signs of aggression, one goes into the crate. But it's not easy, it's stressful on everyone, and I really don't recommend it.

My Basenjis catch and kill wasps and have never got stung in doing so - their snap and release is too quick for them to get stung. However one did get stung on his foot when he trod on a dying bee. Often Basenjis get frightened of a particular thing when they sense their owner's fear. Are you afraid of wasps, Shelley?

I don't have the flu but I am home from work today because I am going to get a shot in my foot to kill a nerve. I am nervous beyond words and Chase and Zahra have been cuddled up with me all morning which really has helped to keep me calm. I wonder if the podiatrist would mind them coming into the office with me for the shot? :D
