Biker Basenji

Show Off Your Dog
  • Awhile ago I had mentioned that my husband and I had a Basenji that rode across Canada with us on a motorcycle. Someone (can't remember who) asked if I had a picture. I haven't found the ones from our tripp, but I did find one of her on the bike. I wanted to make sure that I posted a picture to prove I wasn't sh*tin' ya. She did ride across the country on that bike.

And,she may have been the only Basenji to show up at a National Specialty on a Harley! Practically drove right up to ringside because we were late - no, she didn't win.

  • AWESOME! OUTSTANDING! WICKED COOL! LOVE IT! LOVE IT A LOT!!!!!!!!

:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: That is just the coolest picture. Thanks for sharing that! I've had many bikes, still have two, so that just sits so well with me. Love it, love it, love it. 0_1604983043856_8b484afb-cdd3-4285-8dad-ce9dc40119e3-image.png

  • You say "no she didn't win"? Oh yes, she definitely WON! Great pic. Thanks for sharing.

Having said that, I hope you don't ride motorcycles anymore. Everyone we know who has done that has gotten seriously injured. And in no case was it their fault. The last one was a few weeks ago when a drunk driver went across two lanes and took our friend, who was making a left turn, completely. His knee is pulp, his shoulder is toast, and he has broken ribs. He's looking at months of rehab and will never get back to where he was before he accident.

  • My Kembe wore a “biker babe” pleather biker outfit one Halloween - black w/ the chains and red bandanna. We had a “50’s GREASE” theme for the family that year. Right now w/ my basenji experiencing some issues due to her age - your photo reminded me of happier times when Kembe was a young whipper-snapper and much more active - she’s now an old girl but still my baby! Put a smile on my face! Thanks for posting!

  • @donc :`( I'm sorry to hear about your friends tragic turn in life. My prayers are with them, you, and yours.

I fashioned those bike goggles out of swim goggles - those were in the days before you could actually buy goggles for a dog. She wore them quite well; lost a pair in NB, made up another pair in NS.

She was my first Basenji and she passed away at 18. Her goggles are now hanging over the corner of her picture that stands on a dresser.

No I don't ride anymore, but I sure would if I could, and I know a lot of people who still do. I am so sorry about your friend, but not everyone who rides dies or is seriously injured.

Where did Nala come from? Can she stay there while you're out of town? I did not have a good experience with Rover.com. Don't do it. Can you find and make friends with another basenji owner in your area where you can take turns pet sitting? Maybe you can find local basenji owners on Meetup or Facebook? My heart would break to leave her at a boarding facility or a vet although she'd probably be fine. I like the idea of a pet sitter staying at your home ONLY IF you can really train the pet sitter on several visits before leaving in August (not far away!!!)

Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your replies! Rex just had his first vet visit (first with me at least), and he was given a clean bill of health. The vet that I saw also agrees with a lot of you that he looks like a Min Pin more than a Basenji, but he is likely still mixed with something because he's a bit too big to be a pure Min Pin. I've looked at a few DNA Dog Breed tests online, and they seem to range in price and in quality. It seems like some of the cheaper (~$50) tests are fake, but they go all the way up to almost $250 for the higher quality ones. Do any of you have experience with these DNA tests / have a brand you found reputable? I'll be sure to post the results of any of the tests with this forum! Thanks again, and Rex is doing really great in his new home!! [image: 1559586518913-img_3707-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586546977-img_3720-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586568474-img_3708-resized.jpg]

She is really cute though I don't see Basenji. Like Shirley said, only a DNA can tell you much for certain.

The question about the doggy smell is a good one - basenjis do not smell like dogs. If you stick your face right into their fur the comparison is like sticking your face into a nice clean healthy cat - warm and not really a discernable smell. Except their feet. Their feet smell like Fritos sort of.

I'm originally from California so that is where we got them. I will have to ask my mom if she knows anything about their breeding. They were both over a year old when they came to us. The male was an escaper. My parents had to add an extention on our 6 ft wall because he would jump it. Even then he found a way to get out. We couldnt figure it out for the longest time how he did it. He had found a window upstairs that didn't latch, he would nose it open get on the roof then jump to the wall and from the wall to the ground. The male in pic is prob just sniffing We were working on that bedroom so there were alot of new scents. I cant recall him ever barooing. The female though was very vocal. After talking to my mom, I don't have any more info. Both dogs were given up by their owners because they became to much for them to handle. Alphy the male was a handful being an escaper, Lady was a great counter surfer. Alphy liked all dogs and people. Lady only liked people. But other than that they were sweet and loving dogs.

We got Killian from a breeder in Ohio–-Jim Edgerton. That's where he had gotten our previous male basenji. We took Logan and Jasmine to his place and looked at several 1 year olds and a puppies and Jasmine eliminated the others and we agreed with her pick.
