Looking for a Basenji UK/London/Kent

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • I'm looking to become an owner of a Basenji, and I'm based in South East London, close to Kent. Don't mind travelling a little bit, but would need to be in England for ease of transport.

I know that breeding usually takes place at a particular time of the year, so would like to get in touch with any breeders for the next season and be put on waiting list.

Alternatively, happy to adopt / rescue and if anyone knows of any dogs needing a forever home, pls do let me know.

Would be living with 2 adults, but we also have visits from 2 children occasionally, so would need to be accustomed / advice on getting a pup accustomed with seeing young children (currently under 10)

  • Email me privately. My email address can be found on the websites in my signature block. I will send you a list of breed club secretaries and you can get on a list for the coming winter's crop of pups -

  • Without question Zande would be your best source. You might also want to spend some time on her website. It has a lot of great information.

Not sure what the lockdown situation is in the UK, but when possible I think the best approach would be to arrange to visit the breeder. You get to know them. They get to know you. And they know you're serious.

In my experience Basenjis get along well with children if they know them, which is pretty much the same situation as with adults.

I don't think many people in UK know the exact position on lockdown either, donc !

Basically, you can have 5 people visit you in your garden, (4 if you are already a couple). They may not go into the house to use the loo. We must remain 2 meters apart from other humans at all times but you may riot and gather in mass protest marches and throw bicycles at mounted policemen, causing injury to horses and riders.

I have several wanna-be owners in the South of England (I am about 10 miles inland from the coast) who have an open invitation to come and 'socially distance' in the woods with me, Hoover and Mku. But this entails about a 60 mile drive from London and so far no-one has taken me up on the offer. We await clarification as to distance we are permitted to drive - and also the re-opening of the village pub next door !

Thank you for the plug !

I'm unsure of what is "allowed" but I do know that at this point in time more is allowed than I am willing to do. I'm not ready to go to a restaurant (or pub), get on a plane, or finish our remodel. On the other hand I'm fine with limited people outside. Transmission is primarily by droplets but can occur with aerosols. Distance takes care of the droplets and air circulation takes care of the aerosols. So I would definitely take you up on your offer -- the woods are good for the soul!

Stay safe. Hopefully the crowds won't result in a spike in cases. So far I've been surprised at how holiday crowds haven't lead to outbreaks. Fingers crossed this continues.

If only it didn't involve flying, DonC, you would be more than welcome ! We always enjoyed visits from overseas Basenji people.

The pub next door does have a large beer garden where, in summer, food is served. And while I wouldn't venture into the 'snug' these days, I do miss the convivial atmosphere of the bar. I don't go to supermarkets and until next week the option to go in to other shops, theatres or even the dentist or optician doesn't exist.

The woods are indeed balm to the soul and the pleasure of walking among the Spring greenery and watching two little dogs run and hunt is something even this virus can't take away.

  • @zande Hi Sally, thanks for your response.

I think I checked out your website before this forum and it was really helpful, and I sent you an email then, but I sent you another one before I realised!

I just wanted to check that you've received them, my emails got the same start as my username.

  • I just messaged you with my email address. There is something wrong somewhere, I am not getting emails but will look in SPAM

  • Hello Sally,

Hope you don't mind but I sent you an email too (the email listed on your website), as I am in a similar location to Chateau1 and looking to become an owner of a Basenji, I hope you both don't mind me replying to in this thread. I was just happy to come across it. :)

    Thanks

    Daniel

  • I upgraded to Office 365 in February. Some settings have been totally disrupted which is now only coming to light. Emails incoming to any of my several addresses have been redirected to the one which is more reliable - until the upgrade which seems to have killed off the redirect instruction !

I need to change it on my websites later today but in the meantime will message you with the one to use.

  • Did you manage to find a Basenji at all ?

I have been patiently waiting for years to get one and it is time that I started to look for the perfect breeder.

    I am from Kent also.

    Thanks

  • @buzz-carmenator I have sent everyone who mailed me a list of Breed Clubs in the UK with their secretaries email addresses and also that of the Basenji Rescue co-ordinator.

BUT - people who want a puppy are advised to read a great deal up about them, including the fact that, in the Northern Hemisphere, at least 95% of litters are born November / December ish. So puppies are unlikely to be available until late February next year at the earliest.

Basenji ladies are once-a-year girls, coming into season September / October ish for the most part.

Several of the people I have referred to individual breeders have already visited with them and, if considered suitable, have been put on lists for the next litter. However some people have decided that, on closer inspection, a Basenji is not for them and others have visits pending.

Have a good read of all the articles, including the Zande Put-Off on my website (see signature block) and then email me privately.

As I've said several times in different threads - Covid has brought out a plethora of would-be Basenji owners, not just in UK but across Europe. We are starting to fear dogs being dumped into Rescue when lockdown is lifted and people return to work in offices , having realised there is far more to owning a Basenji than just the facts that they don't bark, are small and keep themselves clean like cats. I have had well over 70 - probably 80 now the weekend's crop of enquiries has been dealt with per email and entered into my notes - and am at a loss to be able to tell them of a single breeder who doesn't already have a waiting list full to overflowing. Anyone posting me privately will receive a detailed response but it won't carry too much hope for this winter.

Hello. Where did you get your basenji in İstanbul? Do you know a place I can get one? How are your experiences with it in a home setting?

Okay so I don't repeat myself over and over... please avoid puppymills/byb pages. Go only to the the basenji club for a list of breeders, use this link"" http://basenjiclubofgb.org/breeders.php Even THEN check out the breeders. As for champdogs site... when a site allows anyone to post if they pay a fee, not a good source. If all you need is a fee and one health test to be approved to be a member, not a good site if you are looking for well bred dogs from responsible breeders. Memtuka keeps protesting.. but this info is directly from her own pages. If she has more testing, then she lacks the professionalism to comprehend that people knowledgeable about breeding would never leave out tests, nor expect puppy buyers to look for further tests. As it is, it is woeful. As is her comment that she tests only if going to breed. A good breeder tests every single dog they produce and keep because they want to know what is in the line. In response to noodle a day ago reply quote @DebraDownSouth Really??? I don't know where you are getting your misinformation from. You seem to know who I am but continue to hide behind your moniker. The stud dogs I used ARE health tested and as far as I am aware Champdogs is a reputable website. May I suggest that you check your facts yet AGAIN and retract your libelous comments.<< I am getting my info from YOUR OWN PAGES. So if your dogs are tested more than I wrote, may I suggest you correct YOUR PAGES which is where I got, and said I got, my info from. Libelous when it is your pages, that's pretty funny. All anyone has to do is click on each of your dog's individual pages and see you list only the testing I said, with only the import with significant testing. Too silly to even respond to the moniker comment.. from someone whose name here is "noodle". Most breeders here use their kennel or real names, btw. As for info on your own pages.. members can simply click and verify.. or check screencaps below. I do hope if you actually have more testing, you will care enough about the image you are portraying of a breeder who has almost no health testing done on your first bitch, nor any listed for the studs of the litters. Lazy or impressively uninformed about the importance, I don't know. 2011 Litter: YOUR PAGE: ... Absolutely doesn't say sire is tested,on either litters YOU LIST.. see screen cap below. Her "health tested" lists only Fanconi. You say PPM, but it isn't listed. Sadly, you act like that is BIG..but yet, it isn't. Your import has testing, so it isn't like you aren't aware how much needs to be done. But again, you only list Fanconi. No PRA, hip, thyroid, heart, nothing else. Sire : Ch Zordia's Indiana Jones Dam : Zordia's Kinyamkela ShCM (Health Tested) Birth Date : 7th January 2011 Contact my Breeder Health Tests Zordia's Kinyamkela ShCM Fanconi Syndrome : Probably Clear/Norm 2009 Elsa's litter arrived in the early hours of 7th January. She had 4 very lively pups - 2 boys and 2 girls.<< https://www.champdogs.co.uk/dog/20360 Next litter, the IMPORTED bitch, yep health testing. But your page says "DAM TESTED"... nothing about sire being tested. If he really is, your job to note them, not "libelous" on my part to say what YOUR PAGE says: 28th November 2015 - Basenji (Dam Health Tested) As said before your IMPORT is tested :::Hi-Lite Bulldobas Wild Child of Memetuka ShCM (Imp Fin) https://www.champdogs.co.uk/litter/38881 Sadly, the readers can click on each of your dogs to see the scant testing YOU listed: https://www.champdogs.co.uk/breeder/24278 Our Dogs Ch Bulldobas Wild Child Of Memetuka (IMP FIN) ShCM - Basenji (Health Tested) Ch Memetuka Jabali ShCM - Basenji (Health Tested) : ::: the import: Hip Score : 3/4 = 7 - 29th May 2015 PPM : CLEAR - 17th February 2015 Fanconi Syndrome : CLEAR/NORMAL - 25th February 2014 Bas_PRA1 : CLEAR/NORMAL - 11th February 2011 Memetuka Cream O'the Crop - Basenji (Health Tested) Fanconi Syndrome : CLEAR/NORMAL - 22nd March 2017 Memetuka Dealer's Choice - Basenji (Health Tested) Bas_PRA1 : CARRIER - 17th March 2016 Memetuka Hi Roller - Basenji (Health Tested)Hip Score : 4/5 = 9 - 14th June 2017..... Please do plenty of research before making a decision to have a Basenji. Where are you in the UK? - if near to me you are welcome to visit my Basenjis and talk Basenji talk. I'm no longer breeding but I think it's important to visit Basenji homes before making decisions. As Benkura says there don't seem to be any female pups available at present. The plus of that is that you've plenty of time to see as many Basenjis as you can. Most breeders are like me and would be pleased for you to visit with their Basenjis.

Hi, I talked to my daughter last night and she really does not want me to find him another home, even though he's making her sick, (she's allergic to him). She threatened to leave home if I did. She's 18 so she could. I guess we will try and keep him. The good news is I did find a place that will pick up and drop off dogs, take them for long walks in the woods, and let them play with other dogs for the day. All for just $17.00 a day. So at least he's not in a crate for 9 hours any more and he seems to really enjoy it. He runs to the person right away and is excited to go and comes back very happy and tired.

My gut feeling is if you can't find a dog who is utterly good with cats already, your best and safest bet is a puppy. I suggest you get on a couple of breeder's list and wait for the perfect pup for your house.
