Looking for basenji breeder UK

  • Hi there, I’ve been searching for a few months now but am really struggling to find a basenji breeder in the UK. Willing to wait and travel to get this breed. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • cast your hunt further. We lived in Hawaii and got our basenji from N.Z. Cost for dog and plane was $2000. He was worth it.

  • There is a member of this group that is one of the best breeders of basenjis in the UK. Because I respect her so highly, I won't reveal her name here. I don't know if she and her husband are still breeding either. So I'll let her answer this query herself, if she wishes.

  • As I've said several times in different threads - Covid has brought out a plethora of would-be Basenji owners, not just in UK but across Europe.

We are starting to fear dogs being dumped into Rescue when lockdown is lifted and people return to work in offices , having realised there is far more to owning a Basenji than just the facts that they don't bark, are small and keep themselves clean like cats.

I have had well over 70 - probably 80 now the weekend's crop of enquiries has been dealt with per email and entered into my notes - and am at a loss to be able to tell them of a single breeder who doesn't already have a waiting list full to overflowing.

Anyone posting me privately will receive a detailed response but it won't carry too much hope for this winter.

This is not the time of year to look for a Basenji in the Northern Hemisphere, let alone in Kent ! One breeder from there is reputed to have said he had enough advance orders for 4 years after the last year's rush to buy a Basenji ! But you could (maybe) get on a waiting list for next March delivery. Email me privately (address in websites on signature block) for a list of breed club secretaries.

@morsesa - Your post for price is way out of date... both for the pup and travel. Please update before posting. Thanks

I am sure that Zande will chime in with suggestions, but know that this time of year all pups are spoken for with reservations for this years litters... you are most likely looking at possible 2021 pups. Zande can give you some breeder (responsible) suggestions

Thank you for the input eeeefarm, that is exactly what I'm planning to do once ive done some more research.i have been around many different breeds of dogs over the years but never owned one myself so I have a fair bit of knowledge about most breeds and I would never put my children in harm's way or any dog for that matter. If I'm not as sure as I can be about my family's ability to love, look after and train a dog we won't be having one. This is why I got onto this forum to gather as much information from owners (like your good self) and others who have bothered to read my message properly,as I can before we go ahead and take on a very large commitment.

If funds are an issues, you can do what I used to do before BRAT came along. Find out the vet of the family your placing him with, have the family pay you for your expenses and then take the dog to the new familys vet for the surgery to be fixed. Drop the dog off the day of the surgery and then new owners pu the dog. They get to pay the bill. That makes sure the dog is fixed, sets up a new vet record for the new dog in the family, and you don't have to pay anything out of pocket. Mostly, you know the surgery WILL BE DONE. Thanks for making sure he is fixed before rehoming. That is so important.
