Fula black

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi everyone!
I've a question about colour genetics of basenji.
I have read that Agouti Locus give red (ay ay or ay at) and tricolour (at at), and K locus is black dominant.
But which the fula black gene is?
I have read that some breeds (sheltie, german shepherd) have an "a" recessive that in two copies give a black dog without black parents.
Is it the gene of fula?
Are there specific researches or documents about fula black genetics and, in general, basenji colours genetics?
    Thanks at all.

No dog is perfect. If the male you are looking at has a lot of great qualities in looks, character and in health, and he compliments your female well, I wouldn't worry about the light nose or eyes. Yes, the pups could inherit them, so that's a choise you will have to make :) I wouldn't exclude a nice male from breeding only based on the colour of his eyes…

Hi, No I am not a doctor, just a head over heels in love with my basenji lady. She is my walking buddy & my lap warmer :) I am going to the Vet today for her thyroid meds…I will keep you'all posted on the results. I so hope those ears turn pink, the rash on her tummy goes away & the eges for her ears stop bleeding. ss

Thanks! I see what you mean, I was mixing up my terminology…native versus foundation dog...and I meant foundation. Zoni gets her black from Miliku on the Jerlin side.

My Abby does that, when she is ready to blow her coat she turns kind of brown on the sides but the hair on her back that she stands up when freaked out stays black all the time.

The 'Fula tris' expression is not normally stern in my opinion. The hardness in some Basenji expressions often comes from the eye colour - lighter eyes seem stern I think, especially if very light. I'll try to remember to bring a photo to the next show (please excuse if I forget though - I've got a lot to deal with at present). I do agree with you that melon pips can soften expression though.
