My Basenji boy, Gadget

Member Introductions
  • Hello. I've been lurking for awhile and finally decided to introduce myself to the group. My name is Jackie and I'm originally from Indiana but now living in Costa Rica. Six years ago I went into the pet store to buy treats for our beagle and came home with a 13 month old Basenji mix. lol. His eyes met mine as I walked in the door and he wouldn't take his eyes off me. He was shaking and very nervous. It was an instant bond between us and I knew I had to take him home. His story was quite tragic. His previous owners were an elderly couple who where about to lose their home and the husband shot the wife while she was sleeping and then killed himself. I believe that "Tipper" (his name at that time) may have been in bed with her when she was shot and killed and that the husband may have been abusive.

Gadget (his name now) was very skittish when he came to live with us and it took several months before he would even come near my husband. But now he's a happy boy who is my constant companion, always at my side in whatever I do.

This is my very first Basenji and found that I love the breed! It hasn't been without it's trials and tribulations though... He can be very stubborn. When I give him a command he is always thinking about what's in it for "him"... so sometimes he obeys, and at other times he does not. Just depends on whether it's to his benefit or not. LOL And we have had some aggression issues around other dogs... especially those that come into our yard. He is definitely an Alpha dog and has been in a few scuffles with our neighbors female Staffordshire.

But overall he's been a complete joy to have around and I am so glad he came into our lives. :)

  • Welcome Jackie! What part of Costa Rica? We have a friend visiting us who has been living there about 6 years. How big is Gadget?

  • The "stubbornness" - ""what's in it for me" - all all Basenji characteristics. You are both so lucky to have found each other. He is gorgeous!

  • He's a cutie. So glad it has worked out for you (and him)!

That "what's in it for me" is definitely a trait. LOL

  • @debradownsouth We live in the Central Valley, near Grecia. Where do your friends live? As for Gadget, he is about 30 lbs.

  • Lovely looking boy - and so lucky to have found you as his forever home !

@eeeefarm said in My boy Hank: ... It will not upload if it the file is too big, so you may need to downsize it first. Yup. You might have to install an Image Resizer. I've had to resize most of the photos I've uploaded.

Hi there. I would do some DNA testing on him. However, if you go to the Colorado Basenji Rescue website, there is a mix at the bottom of the page. There appears to be some similarities. You could also email Peggy of CBR with your photos and ask her. She has been working with Basenji and Basenji mixes for a long, long time.

I have to go read your link, but having been called to the shelter to see a chow that was an overweigh pomeranian, a rottweiler that was a lovely hound dog (Rottie rescue in FL told me keep quiet, they knew it wasn't a rottie but had a good home so just get it. I expected a LITTLE Rottweiler looking... bahahaha, no.)... vets who thought our basenjis were so many other things, not much surprises me.

@krunzer: Keep them separate in their own crates. The older one may not want to put up with puppy play in a big crate. When crated mine are always separate unless they are at the kennel, then they are in the same pen because Becca is not fond of the kennel. PS, basenjis don't like being woken up much, and one dog annoying another who wants to stay asleep might result in a fracas in a confined space; never a good thing.

@cmd: Our 12yr old Ramsey is from one of Linda's Basenji's and a very sweet guy. Have you tried Hacker's Basenji's? Ann is an active and very responsible breeder and she's near Danville. I can't say enough good things about her. We've had 2 of her dogs and both have had great temperaments. She's friends with a lot of other breeders in the area as well. If she doesn't have any available you could also try Select Basenji's near Dayton. I think she was co-breeding last year. We have a Select and she's a great little dog – a ball of energy though! I too was looking for a Basenji last year at this time. We lost our 14 yr old also year to date and felt a puppy would help everyone move on. Sort of became a mission. Puppies can be hard to come by this late, but we did find several. Nope, Tracy's breeding didn't take this year…but I think she is planning one for spring :)

I'm sorry for the loss of your dear Basenjis. Losing a pet is so difficult. I hope this site helps you through the transition. Welcome.
