    Let me explain first that the harness has not yet been made that Butu can't get out of…he is in a Julius-K9 at the moment, but it has to be doubled up with a lead....bearing this in mind, can anyone recommend a secure harness for the new puppy? I am asking this in plenty of time, as I live in the UK, so shipping might take a while. Or could I get away with a travel crate in the back seat - I'm worried about her bouncing around in it....
    For anyone that would like to know about how Butu gets out of his harness, he rears up on his hind legs and sort of hunches his shoulders. The harness comes off complete. I should have named him Houdini...

    Have you tried hurtta?? I use it and oak can't slip it..I use the Y harness…the other he can slip on occasion

    Did a quick google search. Apparently there are harnesses which have a third strap that goes around the belly area, like the Ruffwear Web Master harness. I've never tried any of them, but they may work for your boy.

    Thank you both very much! I do like the look of the Ruffwear Web Master, because there are lots of reviews from people describing their dogs as 'Houdini' dogs, and also lots from people with dogs with deep chests and small waists. I think that I will get one for Butu, and, if it works, get one for New Puppy. I'll let you know how I get on!

    These are great with one exception….. takes about 30 seconds for a Basenji to bite through the nylon!

    It looks very nice, but I would have to email to find if they ship to the UK - it does also look quite similar to some that Butu manages to slip. Thanks anyway!

    My dogs wear a martingale collar with their harnesses. I snap the leash onto the ring for the martingale and the harness (I use front clip harnesses) - that way if they ever happen to slip the harness, they are still attached with the no-slip martingale collar.

    Oh yes, I have done that with Butu too, but if you do that in the car (he is clipped to the seatbelt), he manages to wind himself up in all three…hence an escape-proof harness for use in the car...

    I use an Y-harness (fleece padded). It's a cheap old one I used for my flat coated retriever as a puppy.

    But if he's a true escape artist, maybe you should get a WebMaster harness from RuffWear?

    After read these post i conclude the best harness is the leather ones. And i find 2 on her size. Still dont take to the street but looks secure and confort.

    Those look very nice. I use harnesses for Eddie due to neck issues that presented as a severe limp right front leg/shoulder. A good friend/chiro felt around and thought it was actually neck, so we do "gently pull his head off' stretches when he seems stiff and that , combined with a 'step-in' harness has made a huge difference. I hope your Nicky is better soon and that the harness helps him as much as one helped Eddie.

    I asked her the same thing, wizard. She said he was just hanging out on the back porch while she was cooking. She glanced up at him every few minutes, but she thought he was grooming. He can be pretty sneaky about it, and I know that he can chew through one in no time.

    I would defintely recommend martingale collars, specifically the Lupine brand ones..they are fairly inexpensive and have a 100% guarantee, meaning if your dogs eats/chews or in any way breaks it they will replace, no questions asked..we have used that policy once, when Otis decided to eat his….. As far as food..I have used Blue Buffalo, and like it lots, especially since it is easier to find. I also like EVO, Canidae and The Honest Kitchen..My dogs are on RAW so we use the Honest Kitchen or Sojos for mix ins, even when they were puppies. Good luck and how exciting..did you mention where you got her? A lot of our dogs are related so it is always fun to know.

    @k9collars: I'm not sure you'll be able to stop this problem with the harnesses. Often times, hair loss is from the hairs getting into the weave of the webbing and then it being plucked out. For that problem, you'll need a fabric against their skin that would be of a tight enough weave that the hairs can't get into the weave. Second problem is the friction. The dog is continually in motion rubbing, while the harness is stationary. Back and forth, back and forth. Nylon webbing may not be abrasive when touched, but over time it will have the effect you've noticed. Perhaps a softer lining might work (satin, polar fleece), but over a long distance, it too may have the same result. Time to reach outside the Basenji family to find rollerbladers that take their dogs with them. They must've come across this problem. Nick Lexington, KY Thats what is great about Ruff Wear they really go above and beyond to prevent the friction wear and the hair being pulled out too

    I tried a harness too but got too complicated to undo and my dog kept chewing it. Gave that up and she lies in a transport cage that takes all the back of my car. Had no choice after one seat belt has been dammaged as well as whatever was in the car!. When she is in her "car home", she just goes to sleep or sits up and looks at the road, cars and other things she would like to run after (the back of my car has a large rear window so, plenty to look at during a long journey). No room left in my car but a good solution for my Basenji, when I open the door of her "car home", she waits until I have put the leash on and then jumps out, well attached. If I take her with me in a friend's car, she sits on the back seat quietly BUT no way, can I leave her alone in that car, she would destroy everything and pee on the seats !(from past experience, not much fun for my friends)
