My new brindle bundle of joy…

Show Off Your Dog
  • TMartin…. how funny is this... One of my puppies that I called Mitten Foot because she had a brown leg with just white on her paw (and pastern) like her Mom, finally has a name.

It is Kaia.... which is Hawaiian "by the sea" and they live Santa Barbara. So both one of my Tri girls and your Tri girl have the same call name AND they are related by their parents! Small world, yes?

That is so weird. Kaia is not a popular name by far and has different meanings depending on where you look ("by the sea", "pure", and "earth" among others). I think they have the same father; the other male used was r/w with r/w parents and grandparents. Of course we have to wait for the DNA results, but if Jasper is the sire then they are half-sisters with the same name!

Still would be related back there if Drummer, but how interesting that would be if they have the same Dad… and the same name... WOW..

  • What made you pick Kaia?

  • TMartin,
I think that Tad emailed you that Jasper is the "Daddy"…. so we have 1/2 sisters with the same name

  • @tanza:

    Tri-Tempting

Tri-ing to tempt (or is that 3t's?)

    Tempting tri?

  • Tanza- yes he emailed me. Jasper is the father for the entire litter. So we know for sure we have half-sisters sharing a name! Like ownedbyspencer we thought we were getting a red boy, but found out when our friends got there that it was the tri girl. I had the boy name picked out and had to quickly figure out a girl name. I had a few, couldn't figure out which to choose, but Kaia seemed to fit and I really liked the name. Not to mention I thought it'd be awhile before seeing/hearing another Kaia! I never would have thought her half-sister would be named that too.

  • Life is funny sometimes.. and I agree, who would have thunk it! Tad loved the story….

  • ownedbyspencer- any new names pop out at you recently?

  • Good thing you told her what you named your puppy, we could have had three Kaia's!

  • Lol…I would be going to play the lottery or something if that happened! And then rethinking what I consider "uncommon" names...

  • I had a friend suggest this really pretty and unusual name to me last night– Kaya. Must be one of those stealth trends!

Still no name. I have backburnered it a bit, since I'm dealing with crate training issues. She panics in her crate and has explosive diarrhea the minute I leave her. It's been that way from the trip home. She had never been in a crate before and just went ballistic. So I spent the past week feeding her in the crate, giving her treats and playing with her in there with the door open, trying to erase the negative experience. She's fine with the door open and will go in to eat or get a treat. I can even shut the door for a minute, if I'm right there with her, though you can see her get anxious. Today I shut the door and walked into the other room. The panic started immediately and you wouldn't believe the mess! Any words of advice? TMartin, has Kaia been okay in the crate?

  • So, where is she sleeping at night?

  • Stealth trend indeed!

Kaia has been fine in the crate. She had the other puppy on the ride home from Kentucky and apparently had no problems then. She's been fed in there since she got home and will go sit in there when she's hungry or thinks she should get food/treats.

Loki on the other hand hated anything restricting from day one. He was fed in there and I always kept the door open, throwing treats in when he wasn't looking so if he passed by and smelled it, he'd have to go in to find it. Really high value stuff was given only in the crate (ie raw bones). For a time, just to get him to stay in longer and be ok, while feeding I'd close the door and feed a small amount of kibble through the bars, that took quite some time but it helped him get used to being in there longer than he would have had he eaten from a bowl. I haven't had to deal with that degree of panic, so others will have to fill in there.

Call me, my phone number is on my website….

She sleeps in the bed with me. I get up and take her out around 4 or 5.

That's great… and so cute and clever that Kaia will sit in there to tell you to feed her or dispense treats! I'm glad she's doing so well.

My Spencer was like Loki-- he hated the crate, but he would tolerate it begrudgingly. He grumbled and sometimes wet in there, but no panic. Poor little sweetie-- she'll be going to the vet for her shots, so I'll have her checked out. But her tummy isn't upset any other time...

  • So, names. How about "Vice Versa", call name "Viva" :)

Good luck with the crate issue. I have had two that won't tolerate crates, but the pups I raised were O.K. with them, although the crate stage never lasted long with us…..

  • Congratulations! She is so adorable and I LOVE her markings!
(I haven't read much in this forum) Good luck on naming her! :)

  • Hi, I have toagree with everyone else, sheis adorable. Our third rescue is a brindle boy,who we had to call Buddy, as he and Mr Baroo bonded instantly. As for a Z name I'm pretty sure you aren't old enough to remember an old Hollywood character actress, Zazu Pitts.

Otis, or should I saw my Dachshund Gus, thinks stuffing is unnatural…the animals should be sold without them, and squikers (SP?) too. Both of them love the animals once they are limp, unstuffed, just the stuffed animal skin...that is when they are the best..In Otis' and Gus' humble opinion..

@Buana: Wow! Definately ment to be…. Are you going to visit her brother once in a while? We'll definately be getting together for play dates. Mya will have to endure their terrier attitudes though. I'm sure she can handle her own!

@weeziesmom: I have tried chew bones to curb his chewing however he tries to take weezies and they fight over them You can teach him to leave hers alone. Make them both sit for their chew; give hers first and make him stay with you when she dashes off to chew. {helps him see that she gets one/he gets one, and also gives her a head start!} Make sure he knows you have one for him also. He must sit and make eye contact with you before he is given his treat. Once they both have a chew, make them stay in different spots. Stand between them, moving your body silently to block his attempts to get to her. If necessary, tell him "no" or "leave it". It shouldn't take long for him to learn that he gets his and she gets hers. Eventually, he will just look when you hand her the treat and will sit and stare at your face until he gets his own, then he'll run to his own spot to chew his bone.
