Robyn, they knew there was a creature out there that even stalked a child. Having the dog with them, off leash, out at dusk was a foolish risk in my opinion. It says she thought the dog was sniffing around– so not sure if that meant she wasn't even watching the dog and thought it was just checking things out (stupid) OR the dog seemed to be scenting something (STILL STUPID) and she stayed. And yeah, she should have had a gun just to protect even herself. It was an unnecessary risk.
Florida Basenji, 1958

Came across this Basenji from a 1958 picture in the State Archives of Florida

Photographed by Harvey E. SladeNeat!

Wow, a Basenji right up there with political figures-go figure! interesting, been to Monroe St. in Tall. and did see Slade's name mentioned here and there…
(Slade's was the major portrait studio in Tallahassee for many years, and most major figures in political and social circles were photographed there, including Governors Claude Kirk, Farris Bryant, Leroy Collins, Charles Johns, Fuller Warren, and Spessard Holland and their families; Lieutenant Governor Tom Adams; Commissioner of Agriculture Nathan Mayo; Senator Claude Pepper; and Supreme Court justices and circuit court judges)

Way kewl! !!!!!!!
-
Very interesting! And, just like all of them, this basenji decided his seat was "wherever he damn well wanted to sit."
-
Neat photo to bad we don't know the dogs registered name.

Buddys Pal, interesting info about the photographer! There is a brief obituary for the owner online:

I guess he was a WWII vet, and aide to the President of the Florida Senate, and just present in those circles. Mostly, I am curious why and how he got this particular breed of dog back in the day…
-
I saw that Obit also. I think the reason why he got that breed is the same reasons some of use have gotten into Basenjis he red about them and fell in love.

LOL– so true! You know what they say-- "For the best seat in the house, please move the dog."
Very cool pic!
