UTI Infection?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • We have had Saavik for about two weeks now…Every night she a good 5-10 minutes lick fest on her butt and genital area...At first we thought she was just cleaning herself... but she gets very intense like it is bothering her...However, she acts fine the rest of the time... She eats and drinks plenty of water...Normal bowel movements and she isn't peeing more frequently or anything... She doesn't seem to have any inflammation or fishy smells.

I'm just wondering if her behavior is normal and as a new pet owner maybe I'm overly worrying of if you guys think I should make her a vet appointment....

  • Sounds like a Basenji taking a bath! Does she only lick that area, or does she do a clean up on the rest of herself? I find my guy will work diligently on one area for awhile, then switch to somewhere else. If this is a once a day occurrence, I wouldn't be too concerned about it. If she is spending a lot of time throughout the day on this one area, that is a different story.

  • she does it usually in the evening after dinner and will later lick her paws and thighs….yesterday was her monthly does of revolution...so we thought maybe the medicine had worn off from last month and she was more susceptible to fleas etc...I thought I would keep an eye on her for the next few days and may take her to the vet next week if she gets worse or showed any true symptoms.

  • Sounds to me like pretty normal behavior. They rarely lick themselves when they have a UTI.. at least not that I have ever seen. If she is really after her butt, her anal glands could be full….

    How old is she?

  • Pat,
She turned 2 in December… We rescued her from BRAT....She has had a bit of Dandruff and I thought I'd give her a bath with Oatmeal Shampoo tomorrow and see if that may help as well.

I looked over your website, you have some of the best looking Basenji's I have ever seen!!!! kudos to you!

  • Thank you for your kind words… about the Tanza Kids

You might want to check out and see if maybe her anal glands need to be expressed... other then that, I would say she is being normal...

SO, we had him on antibiotics for awhile. He was doing great for a week or two, I recently had him neutered (at 8 months) to stop the marking that was beginning…he's stopped marking, but now has more issues with inappropriate urination. IE the door will be open and he'll have access to outside; he'll run outside, then inside and pee as if he doesn't have any control (a lot of urine). He also wet his bed the other day, and then attempted to make it outside. He doesn't have this same issue with defecation. He'll wake me up in the middle of the night, or go back to sleep, then wait by the door for me to open it and go outside. We took him to a second vet to check for a return UTI, the vet said there were no problems. Getting a little frusterated not knowing if this is a separate issue, or something that's been wrong with him all along that's not being seen. He's also been noticeably itchier.

Anytime I have a dog that has a UTI, I add extra water to their food. I also give Cranberry pills. I sometimes give Vitamin C but that is based on the ph level of the urine and the recommendation of the vet. My dogs rarely have crystals but perhaps I catch the UTIs early. It seems like rescues I get from shelters almost always have UTIs. I think they get it from either holding it too long because they do not want to get their kennel dirty or because they eat dry food and drink water separately. Jennifer

Sounds like it makes sense. I guess I was giving them too much. Just wonder if anybody else ran into this. Nika had too many bladder infections. Every time I saw her squatting a lot I thought "oh no not another infection". If they get a bladder infection you'll know if you see them squatting a lot. Then just get a small jar and catch some when they pee and if the urine is cloudy it's probably a bladder infection.

They perscribed Batril for Caesar when he had a UTI and it fixed it up right away. What brand food are you using?

In the mean time, you can probably smear some plain yogurt on her itchy spots. At least you won't have to worry about them getting licked off. Yeast infections are difficult to treat because the yeast produces spores that are difficult to erradicate completely. Antibiotic and steroid use makes it worse.
