Another place to advertise basenjis- Facebook Marketplace.

Basenji Rescue
  • Hi everyone, I just realized that Facebook has a "marketplace", where you can either look for a specific item, or you can browse and look at your friends' stuff. I happened across it today and found the following advertisement. I left a message with the lady explaining about BRAT and their FB page. However, I know there are several of us on this forum that try to keep an eye out for basenjis before they ping pong into another home, so I thought I'd inform you of another place where basenjis are bartered…

    Here is an example:

  • Thanks Patty! By the way, let me know if you are aware of a nice adoptable basenji locally, I have a friend who may be interested.

  • FB found a way around advertising animals. Shame on them. Maybe if all of us contacted FB and told them we would dump our accounts? The FB person who gave the go-ahead for this type of advertising should be very embarrassed. Animals are not commodities!

FB did not create this advertising. They bought, or made some kind of arrangement with, an existing advertising place called Oodle. It is basically the same thing that Ebay did when they bought, or made arrangements with, an already existing advertising place called Kijiji. Both companies took advantage of using already successful "businesses" to advance themselves. A smart move from an investment viewpoint.

I don't understand why people would object? It is pretty much the same as the classifieds section of a newspaper. The only difference is that it is online instead of in paper form. Having the advertising connected to FB accounts can be very advantageous to small, family businesses. Let's say you make jewelry and sell mostly on etsy. You can promote your items on FB with links to your etsy account but if you can post ads on the new FB marketplace, you increase your advertising by potentially reaching millions of more people. The advertising potential is also advantageous for finding homes for animals. Yes, most ads are from irresponsible breeders but responsible breeders and rescue groups can possibly find homes through there also. I see this as a good thing.

  • I saw the ad for the free Basenji from Wheelersburg, OH. Has anyone heard back from the owner? This area is where the dogs that I rescued from an Amish breeder/broker originally came from. I am certain that one of the dogs came from Wheelersburg. These dogs would be close to the same age or within a year as they were born in 2006/2007 and came from two different breeders who obtained their parents from a breeder in Eastern KY. Someone needs to get this dog as he will be used for breeding if he is not already neutered! This is a poor county with an above average unemployment rate.

  • HI Jennifer, I think the young lady joined the BRAT website on FB, so she's now aware of the group…. I hope she reaches out to you guys if she decides to re-home her boy. He's a beautiful boy!

BTW, I also use the shunning method with my basenji. He gets into everything and so I have to baby proof my house. Sometimes I leave a drink on the table and he tries to drink out of it and when I catch him with it, I let him know I am mad! I growl at him and then turn my back to him and he gets very upset. When he does anything I do want him to do, all I have to do is growl at him and he comes over to me bows his head and curls up in my lap. I guess it is an instinctual reaction to submit to his pack leader. He hates it when I ignore him in any way. He is funny, because he will sit down and look at me and whine or try to jump up on the chair with me if he thinks I am mad at him. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk

Here's what I know: 2 bites to one foster mom. The first was over chicken, trying to take it away from him. The second was over going into the crate. I have not seen any aggression over the crate unless you're forcing him in, he goes in great with a little treat, and now we don't even have to do that. He sleeps in the crate and goes in there when he's not supervised or we're not home. I think she needed stitches for both, but she's older and disabled.
