New Basenji Friend!

Basenji Talk

  • So I posted on the Lawton OK Craigslist PETS section seeing if there were any other Basenji owners in the area to suggest a play date. And surprisingly in Fletcher (SMALL town nearby with barely 500 people) someone emailed me who has a Female Basenji. I havent seen her yet but we are going to set up a play date sometime soon! :) Anubis is going to have a new friend! I was very surprised to actually get a response…especially from someone in such a small town!

  • Good to hear that Anubis is to have a new friend - what a coincidence that there is another Basenji nearby.

  • Hope to hear the b's make nice and you have a great play day.

  • Even with us living in a highly populated area, I am always overjoyed when we come across another basenji. Hope the b's have a wonderful time together! Remember to take pictures!

  • didn't realize the kjaanbutt was spam sorry!

@theoriginaldev As others have said, an older dog would be better on neutral ground. A puppy will probably go really well. From my own experience, a bit of initial posturing from the older dog, then when they realize it’s playtime...the games will commence. Good luck!

@rugosa LOL on the pig ear. But it's not just a basenji trait. One night it was storming and one of my rotts was fixated on one of the bedroom windows. I looked, there was a toad on the screen! The dog was so intense about wanting to get to it, my daughter went out in the rain and moved it from the window. From then until she died, day or night, I had to let her in the bedroom when it stormed to make sure the once-in-a-lifetime visitor wasn't there. They think more than many people give them credit for.

Well I will tell you a couple of differences - walking basenjis you typically have 1 boy one girl - and stay away from other dogs. I can walk 2 or 3 bigs and 1 little and they just walk along - not as dog aggressive as some basenjis can be - still as food aggressive. Similar play styles - butt up. Since the basenjis at my house a Seniors - once the bigs get BIG I don't usually let them play together because a 2 year old big anything and a 10 or 15 year old anything not a good combination. The hardest thing to get used to was - they bark. They are VERY attentive to everything outside of the yard when they are out and need to alert me. A 57 lb dog in your lap is heavier than a 20 lb dog and takes up more space. Like basenjis I have some that are on your lap, some right next to you and some within arms length in case you drop something. Like basenjis - they are a female led group BUT they don't seem to have to have that continuous discussion with each other on who is in charge.

Sounds quite the opposite… he obviously wanted to be friends with the kitty! He was just overly enthusiastic about it, and maybe went about it the wrong way :D

So I've committed to getting a brindle basenji pup January 7th. She'll be about 18 weeks old by then so hopefully not too old to cultivate a healthy, non-homicidal relationship with my cat. The wait is killing me, feels worse than waiting for christmas day as a kid ha ha.
