Rabies Vaccination Reaction

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Maya had her rabies vaccination nearly two weeks ago, it is a necessary vaccine for her to be able to get her passport and show overseas which we are hoping to do with her in the future. Anyway, she had a bad reaction to the injection immediately and scratched at the area constantly for the first couple of days  She finally stopped scratching at it, but it has left a fairly large lump right between her shoulder blades. At first I just put it down to a mild reaction as I know basenji's are sensitive, but its still there now. Its about the size of a grape and fairly hard, it moves about under the skin though  The vet came out to the horse a couple of days ago and I mentioned it to him, he didnt seem overly concerned, just said to bring her back if it doesnt go down in another week, but he hasnt had much experience with basenjis, Maya being the only one they've had :D So thought i'd ask on here for any opinions.

She has never had a reaction to her normal vaccinations and boosters, was microchipped with no problems and doesnt seem to be in any discomfort in the area the lump is now.

Anyone had this before? Did it just go away on its own?

  • Happens lots…. my OJ and Maggii always had a "lump" after... usually took 3 to 4 weeks to go away.... Try not to "worry"....

  • Happened to one of our boys - even the hair came off. As Pat says, the lump did eventually go away, but the hair never did grow back properly.

  • It is not uncommon, particularly with killed vaccines containing reactive adjuvants (usually mercury additives to stimulate the immune system) to get a lump afterwards.; they are usually made up of inflammatory cells and scar tissue. I suggest finding a thermisol free (mercury free) rabies vaccine if possible for future injections. They can still get a small lump but not usually.

Generally the lump reduces in size over 2-6 weeks but can stay the same for years while most disappear.

You should worry only if it continues to get larger (esp. after a long stretch when it stayed one size) or if it becomes red and painful (rarely bacteria can be introduced or pushed through the skin via the needle causing an abscess) and Maya seems off.

  • Mine still have a lump going on week 4 now but otherwise nothing o worry about. My whippets get a lump for 4 to 6 weeks after theirs. I had one dog get a distemper reaction
Once, his head swelled up, took him
Back to the vet for another shot to get the swelling down and used over the counter meds too

  • My vet makes sure we massage it right after for about 6 to 8 minutes to help spread it around, but a couple of ours always got a bump, some took a couple of months to go away, we just kept massaging it everytime they sat or laid beside us. Some are more sensitive than others.

  • Oh, I must have been very lucky..my b's have not had this happen.

  • Kipawa had this happen with one of his shots. It took about 2 months to go away, and started to really reduce in size with massage. The area is perfectly fine now - you'd never know anything odd had been there.

There are different types of rabies vaccine. The ones most likely to cause a reaction have thimerosal in them. A friend's dog (not a Basenji) had an anaphylactic reaction to a rabies shot, and she would have lost him had the vet not still been present and able to counter it with epinephrine. In the future they made sure the shots he got did not have thimerosal. Usually reactions aren't quite so dramatic, but something to keep in mind. I also used blood titers to avoid unnecessary vaccinations with my dogs. More expensive, but worth it!

This sucks! I can't find any evidence of bat poop on my balcony anywhere. There's also really no where for them to hide. The bat was found where it could have possibly come off my balcony where the pup was. She was on the third floor balcony, and the bat was all the way downstairs, probably about three feet from the beginning of my actual balcony. When you come downstairs, there's a little step leading down to the sidewalk. The bat was perched on this part of the sidewalk, hanging upside down. I could have sworn it was slightly twitching when I first saw it, but it could have been the wind. I sat outside to warn my neighbor, because they also have kids and would have to step right where the bat was. When he came home and I warned him, he smacked the bat down with a piece of wood he just do happened to be carying. I asked him of it was alive and he said it was dead. I told him I had called someone to come get it, but I guess he took things into his own hands. I called the vet but of course they were closed. So I left a message explaining what happened and asked what he thinks I should do. They have an emergency clinic but since I don't even know if her and the bar had actual contact I'm not considering it an emergency, unless she shows some dramatic behavior change between now and Monday. Everything I've been able to find online seems to say that a 10 day confinement to check for symptoms is fine.

@tanza: Yes, it is a learning process… just like our own health... and you are right Holly... it is a learning experience... we are all conditioned to believe what we are told by doctors.. and Vets... but in reality, we all need to research on our own... Case in point... my Kristii (to be 15 in December) is in renal failure.... her RBC was down to 18%.... while SubQ fluids have moderated her kidneys to a reasonable level... she was still very anemic... there is a hormone produced by the kidneys that is directly connected to RBC's. So her Vet recommended a hormone replacement.. however one possible side effect is that she can develop antibodies and if that happens it will be totally not effective. I asked a couple of people that I know that are Vet Techs in Specialty Clinics and ER hospitals... and received info about a different hormone that has much less of a chance to produce/develop antibodies... I gave that info to her Vet... she had not heard of it... but was very thankful for the info... and said, yes that would be a better choice... By the way, her RBC is up to 40% which is up to the excellent range and now only on SubQ fluids 2x's a week and doing really well.. she has gained almost 2 1/2 lbs... and eating well (home cooked food..ggg)... Sometimes I think some of you all should be the vets! You definitely own a great wealth of knowledge about the breed.

Judy Schor's agility champion, Peaches, suffered a significant adverse reaction to a rabies booster. Judy has posted photos of Peaches and a letter from the vaccine manufacturer, Fort Dodge, offering a settlement to pay for medical treatment if they not disclose information about the claim. You can read the letter and see photos of Peaches at this link: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2042916&id=1447415540&ref=mf .
