Allergic reaction to rabies vaccine ?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • @myran:

    Thank you Andrea
They´ve realised that one is rarely sufficient we give one and 30 day´s later the second after 120 day´s from the second shot we take a blood test and after that the dog get´s his doggie passport. We then renew the vaccine every 2-3 years.Ok I have to remember to give him an antihistamine before the next shot but could I risk his life and that he get´s an anaphylactic shock.I´m planning to show him in other countries but it´s not worth it if I risk to loose him.

Well…I don't know....I am not a vet...but I can tell you that a few of my dogs got welts like you described after a vaccine. And they never did after I started giving a antihistamine prior to the shot. Maybe you should talk to your vet, and see what she/he suggests?

I think that he would have already had an anaphylactic shock reaction if he was really allergic to the rabies vaccine. Could they use a different manufacture?… Like Andrea, I give all mine antihistamine before rabies shots..
And wow, that seems like over kill to give one, the 30 days later?....
But you should talk to your Vet also about is reaction.

Yes it seems like overkill I agree but they´ve seen on the blood results that the dog´s wouldn´t be fully vaccinated with one only and as we are one of the few so called rabies free countries in the world .I could risk not being alouded to enter back to sweden and having to put Myran into quarantine for several months. But I will certainly ask my vet.

Yes, we all have to follow such laws… but I certainly would ask about a different manufacture and also let your Vet know that seems your boy did have an allergic reaction for the next time the shot is due...

  • Yippee i´m a happy bunny Myran went for his second rabies shot 2 day´s ago and this time no reaction.I don´t know if it was the homeopathic pills my friend who´s a basenji breeder in finland sent me that did the trick or if he just could handle it better this time doesn´t matter as long as he´s fine. Now I can finally sleep without having to be scared :D

That is great, what kind of pill were they?….

  • Benadryl's generic drug name is diphenhydramine.

  • No, I don't think it was Benadryl… Myran said it was homeopatic.... I use Benadryl now ..... especially before rabies shot....

  • I just mentioned the generic name of Benadryl because Quercus couldn't recall the name. Often drug names are different in foreign countries.

  • No what I gave Myran was Thuja pills(related to the cedar tree)I was supposed to give him 1 immediately after the rabies shot and then one more within the next 24 hrs.And it worked whether it was the thuja or not but he was ok.
But being the skeptic that I am I had cortison pills at home from the vet just incase of a anafylactic rection.

@jengosmonkey - NuHeart only does Heartworm, Heartguard Plus has meds for roundworms & hookworm. And people that give heartworm for 6 months are typically people that live in climates that have a cold winter, ie: when the ground freezes. We do not have that in this part of No. California so I give it year round.

Lucky for us in New Zealand we don't require the rabies vaccine, but it is great news that work is being done so dog's in countries that require the vaccine are not subjected to unnecessary poisoning. Glad there are people out there giving their all into making the use of vaccines safer for our pets as they can't speak for themselves. Hope everyone involved gets the recognition they deserve for their hard work and persistence and hope the results in the coming years are all positive. Jolanda and Kaiser

@khanis: This has been this way for quite some time. There hasn't been a difference in the 1 and 3-yr vaccines for as long as I have paid attention to them… True, but so many pet owners are unaware of this fact.

@tanza: Yes, it is a learning process… just like our own health... and you are right Holly... it is a learning experience... we are all conditioned to believe what we are told by doctors.. and Vets... but in reality, we all need to research on our own... Case in point... my Kristii (to be 15 in December) is in renal failure.... her RBC was down to 18%.... while SubQ fluids have moderated her kidneys to a reasonable level... she was still very anemic... there is a hormone produced by the kidneys that is directly connected to RBC's. So her Vet recommended a hormone replacement.. however one possible side effect is that she can develop antibodies and if that happens it will be totally not effective. I asked a couple of people that I know that are Vet Techs in Specialty Clinics and ER hospitals... and received info about a different hormone that has much less of a chance to produce/develop antibodies... I gave that info to her Vet... she had not heard of it... but was very thankful for the info... and said, yes that would be a better choice... By the way, her RBC is up to 40% which is up to the excellent range and now only on SubQ fluids 2x's a week and doing really well.. she has gained almost 2 1/2 lbs... and eating well (home cooked food..ggg)... Sometimes I think some of you all should be the vets! You definitely own a great wealth of knowledge about the breed.

I guess we have been lucky. Roo got his Rabies shot about 3 weeks ago and was fine. We also used Advantix on him with no issues. With the flooding we have had here recently, the Mosquitos have been terrible. We even stopped walking in the park because they are so bad and will swarm on Roo. Jason

Judy Schor's agility champion, Peaches, suffered a significant adverse reaction to a rabies booster. Judy has posted photos of Peaches and a letter from the vaccine manufacturer, Fort Dodge, offering a settlement to pay for medical treatment if they not disclose information about the claim. You can read the letter and see photos of Peaches at this link: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2042916&id=1447415540&ref=mf .
