  • Hello everyone I'm new to the forum world and also to the basenji world…just got my new little 5 month old last week and wow are basenjis a trip lol Gizzmo is the first small dog I have owned in almost 16 years so its definately a relearning experience but one that I am enjoying very much...Gizz and I bonded right away and he hasn't left my side since always sure to have his head layin on me in one way or another(he is a real snuggler) we are having a little problem with potty training but making progress...so ya that's pretty much it hope to meet some great people here and maybe in the future a companion....for Gizzmo of course:)

  • Welcome to you and Gizzmo! You are in for a wild ride, just keep your sense of humor!

    Photos, please.

  • Welcome… who did you get your Basenji from? Many of us are related by our Basenjis.

  • Welcome to the forum! Lots of great folks and wonderful pics to share your basenji stories and questions with.

  • Welcome to you and Gizzmo - seems a popular name or a Basenji. May you have many more happy and interesting years to come.

  • Can't wait to see photos!

  • Great to have you and Gizzmo here with us. I can't wait to see some pictures!

Regarding potty/pee training, do you have a command word to use to let Gizzmo know it's his pee time? We use 'hurry hurry'. Just remember that he'll need to pee after sleeping, eating and play times. In a thread awhile back, it was said that a dog at 5 months 'should' be able to hold their pee for 6 hours. The rule for that is taking their age and adding 1, hence Gizzmo could hold for 6 hours.

At 5 months, I was setting the alarm for around 5:30 in the morning to get up and let Kipawa out. Eventually he was the one that let me know that he didn't want to be woken at 5:30 a.m. So, I decided to trust him, and he didn't let me down. No accidents. Gizzmo will be there in no time. Time flies when you have a basenji! :)

Welcome, and so glad to see you respect a dog enough to do some research before getting one. I LOVE that attitude! Stick around - there is tons of great info here and everyone cares about the breed SO much! :)

The choice is most certainly yours. And thank you for your interest in our breed. And now you may be able to educate others about the breed we care for.

Hi cmd - My name is Jill and I am the recipient of a rescued male puppy, Duke, who I have since learned (after 4 months) is a Basenji, now 8 mos. old. I love this forum, because I have learned alot about this breed. I now realize that Basenjis are a challenge, but I believe the more I know, the easier he will be for me and my family. There is no turning back now because we are in love with Duke . Select "Bonnie Bell" a 10 month old female (from Emerant's the Instigator and Select in my Pocket) and "Ramsey" Geheep's Klassic Jim a 11 year old male (Klassic Eye of the Tiger and Baruh's Jessica Hahnd) Wish I knew where Duke's blood lines run. You must be proud. I am new at this and I love to read the stories and learn that I am not crazy! I am glad you're a veteran as are many forum friends here. I love the stories about the Basenji's extraordinary body of energy and their purposes. Can you guess why my handle is Crazy Duke? I can tell you about some unbelievable stories about Duke since bringing him home already. (That's why I'm glad to find this forum - Duke's not crazy, he's a Basenji.) She was an awesome dog and was very very loyal. I am so sorry for your loss. But the only comfort we have is knowing she had a great life being in your life. I've lost many doggies over the rainbow to squirrel heaven. I hope you'll share some more stories and help us new-B's here on the Basenji Forum.
