Wanted__Adult female Basenji

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • There are other adults than the Wimauma ones with Brat. I had forgotten about Jozie. Somehow I was thinking she was placed.

  • I am aware of a new posting in California, anew posting in Indiana (Both are very interesting) and older postings in Tennessee, SC, and Illinois, but nothing in Florida or Georgia. Since I would like for my male to meet the female so that I can observe the interaction between the two, many of these states are a little too far for a simple overnight trip from Florida.

Are you aware of any additional female basenjis with BRAT? I was told by BRAT there were others that are not listed on their website when I signed up with them; however, since I signed up, I have not been made aware of any that are not listed. I would appreciate any information available that is not on the BRAT website, including a little info on Basenji Underground and the process for using it.

  • Thank you for suggestion Jozie, Pat. I have responded to jdurden and am hoping we can open up a dialog. :)

  • You may want to write Brat and tell them you are still interested and ask what dogs are available now or coming up. There are always new ones. The big issue is, as always, an adult used to cats. Robyn's is not a common situation so I hope things go well there. If not, let Brat know.

  • Thank you Debra. I have communicated witth Pam Hamilton that I am still looking and requested any additonal or new info on availability. I have received an email from Robyn and have answered it. All of the kind help is vastly appreciiated.

  • @YodelDogs:

Thank you for suggestion Jozie, Pat. I have responded to jdurden and am hoping we can open up a dialog. :)

Glad to do so… and hope that this might a good fit for all.....

  • Good news…..Robyn and I have had a very nice conversation about Jozie and have come to an agreement to place her in our home. We will take Moxie to visit Jozie this weekend for a meeting and after neutering (both will be neutered, Jozie in the Atlanta and Moxie in Melbourne) and a healing interval, Jozie will move to Florida. Thanks to all for your kind and considerate comments and advice in this matter. Jozie will require a delicate adjustment to her new home and I look forward to working with her and earning her trust.

WooHOO… that is great news. Sounds to me like it will all work out, but sending positive vibes for a good first meeting.

  • Do let us know how it goes please.

  • Yay!!! I hope everything works out! I can't wait to hear how it goes :)

  • Yes, that is wonderful news…keeping my fingers crossed all goes well...please keep us posted

  • Huzzah!!!! Brilliant news. Congrats

  • well wishes on a smooth trasition for everyone! best of luck

  • This is great news for all!!!

  • It's wonderful when forum members can help each other out. I wish Jozie the smoothest transition into what is obviously a basenji-savvy home.

  • :) That is terrific. Robyn is a wonderful person and a wonderful breeder. I just wish she lived closer! We have two of her dogs, including Jozie's brother, Jayden. We got Cory (from a different litter) from her and then went back for Jayden. The first two weeks were horrific and they just want to fight. The only place they would get along was outside. (Thank goodness it was warm!) Inside, we had to keep the dogs leashed so they wouldn't try to kill each other. We decided to return Jayden after two awful weeks but my husband's work schedule wouldn't allow the trip back to Atlanta for another week. That was a blessing because the dogs drew up a truce during that 3rd week. We looked out the window one day and Cory had her head resting on Jayden's rump. It got smoother and smoother from that point on! Now they can't bear to be apart. So be patient and give it a good chance. You will love knowing Robyn!!

  • Thanks for the input Pat. We are looking forward to meeting Robyn and her Basenjis this week-end at her place. We had a nice long conversation this morning and I believe you are correct about her. Her Basenjis are certainly beautiful. I haven't seen their personality, but from her photos, they are typical Basenjis, little devils one minute and little darlings the next.

  • Fabulous news! Jozie is a beauty who was just waiting for the perfect home.
Realize that it may not be 'love at first sight' but if they meet on fairly neutral territory, go for a long walk together, sniffing the same things getting used to each other and don't 'hate' each other, it will work itself out!
I am so happy for both you and Robyn and Jozie!

  • And there will be lots of "swearing" at home for a bit… or for that matter, way past that... it is the one thing that you can never prepare single Basenji owners for... the noise that comes from their mouths...gggg Just take it in stride...

  • I know it will require time for a comfort level to be realized and look forward to it. Robyn has already cautioned me that Jozie has had at least one bad experience with a male human and does not readily accept them. She will eventually come around if not forced to do so and observes attention given to Moxie. As for the sounds eminating from their mouths, I love to hear Basenjis making their varied sounds. Unfortunately, Robyn advised that Jozie is not very vocal. I hope that will change when she gets comfortable in her new home. I am sure Robyn will have loads of advice about Jozie for me to use for helping her adjust to a totally new environment. She will be well worth whatever effort it takes.

All pups have been placed as responsible breeders have reservation lists. We are not at this time planning a litter for 2020 or 2021. I would be happy to talk to you about Basenjis. You can search for responsible breeders at www.basenji.org by state, however as far as I know all responsible breeders on the West Coast already have full reservation lists. You would be looking at litters possible in 2021. This is the time to connect with a responsible breeder and get on their reservation lists for 2021. And if you are looking for a dog that is hypoallergenic, Basenjis do shed and have dander so they are not really hypoallergenic. While they can do well with people with allergies, you need to spend time with them and more than one time. Be sure that you check out health testing yourself, regardless of what you might be advised. Tests for DNA testing is public knowledge at www.ofa.org. You need to have either a registration number or name to check this out for yourself to verify. I suggest all people looking for a Basenji, even my own, do this.

Go to the Basenji Club of America's web site (BCOA). To find Basenji breeders go to the Breeder Directory. Breeders are listed by state. Contact the Breeder Liaison as she keeps an additional list of breeders that do not breed often and do not want their names openly advertised. https://www.basenji.org/index.php/about-basenjis/breeder-directory

@helle-devi Thank you for responding. I have already been in touch with the basenji sisters. I was not aware before I contacted them that they are located in CA. I think the distance between us is too great. If things didn’t work out between my basenji and one of their girls, the distance would be a problem. I did become a member on the Facebook site that you recommended. Thank you so much! I was unaware that such a site existed. Jo Ann

@sharronhurlbut: Pat, I am not a "fan" of low cost spay/neuter places either…BUT IMO, they are less of a risk than having an intact basenji placed in the general public. I will post an article I just received re pet owners and getting their pets fixed in my next post. Re this note, to me, having the dog fixed at one of these places is the lesser of 2 evils. Yeah…what she said!
