Wanted__Adult female Basenji

  • FL Basenji rescue has several adults. The issue isn't your male dog, but the cat. I have to warn you that any dog, even if they get along with other cats, might pose a risk to an elderly cat. Is it possible to keep the cat separated? I have notified basenji rescue, but you might want to contact them directly.

  • Have you contacted Sherwood Basenjis in Ga? www.sherwoodbasenjis.com

Debra's is right. Elderly cats really need to be cared for with a basenji in the house. We have 2 elderly cats that were comfortable with dogs, but Kipawa did have to learn that the kitties were here before him and that they were to be given respect. Fortunately, we have kittie areas that Kipawa cannot get to. If our cats walk normally in the house, Kipawa could care less. If they start running around (like after a poop), Kipawa wants to play chase, and that is when I keep a real eye out to make sure things stay safe.

You can always check http://www.basenjirescue.org/ for a suitable new member to your family.

  • When we wanted out first b, we waited until the cats when to the rainbow bridge before adding a basenji. But if you can keep them seperated, that would work as well.

  • I believe it depends entirely on the nature of the cat. We had two elderly cats, male and female, when we brought our 10 week old Basenji home. A couple months older, the male cat went to the Rainbow Bridge, too sick to go on. That cat ignored her, the female cat has made it perfectly clear she better stay away (the B has a couple scars to prove it on her side). When we brought a 16 month old B mix in as a companion to our little girl who was then 9 months, the same situation applied. Now, Shaye stays clear of the cat, and the mix follows that cat around and sleeps near her sometime - no problems any more.

  • Hi DebraDownSouth,
I am registered with BRAT and have visited the Wimauma Basenjis. Attempted to adopt one but a couple of delays due to events there and notification of intestinal problems the day before the adoption forced us to look elsewhere. Thank you for the suggestion.

  • Hi Tanza,
I have emailed Sherwood Basenjis about Jozie and am waiting for a reply.

  • Hi Fran and Sharron,
We had a Basenji when we got the cat as a kitten 17 years ago. Since that time the cat has lived with as many as four Basenjis at one time. He hides when more than one is around and plays when only one is with him. We would not allow a new Basenji to be with the cat until we are sure she would be okay and properly introduced.

  • There are other adults than the Wimauma ones with Brat. I had forgotten about Jozie. Somehow I was thinking she was placed.

  • I am aware of a new posting in California, anew posting in Indiana (Both are very interesting) and older postings in Tennessee, SC, and Illinois, but nothing in Florida or Georgia. Since I would like for my male to meet the female so that I can observe the interaction between the two, many of these states are a little too far for a simple overnight trip from Florida.

Are you aware of any additional female basenjis with BRAT? I was told by BRAT there were others that are not listed on their website when I signed up with them; however, since I signed up, I have not been made aware of any that are not listed. I would appreciate any information available that is not on the BRAT website, including a little info on Basenji Underground and the process for using it.

  • Thank you for suggestion Jozie, Pat. I have responded to jdurden and am hoping we can open up a dialog. :)

  • You may want to write Brat and tell them you are still interested and ask what dogs are available now or coming up. There are always new ones. The big issue is, as always, an adult used to cats. Robyn's is not a common situation so I hope things go well there. If not, let Brat know.

  • Thank you Debra. I have communicated witth Pam Hamilton that I am still looking and requested any additonal or new info on availability. I have received an email from Robyn and have answered it. All of the kind help is vastly appreciiated.

  • @YodelDogs:

Thank you for suggestion Jozie, Pat. I have responded to jdurden and am hoping we can open up a dialog. :)

Glad to do so… and hope that this might a good fit for all.....

  • Good news…..Robyn and I have had a very nice conversation about Jozie and have come to an agreement to place her in our home. We will take Moxie to visit Jozie this weekend for a meeting and after neutering (both will be neutered, Jozie in the Atlanta and Moxie in Melbourne) and a healing interval, Jozie will move to Florida. Thanks to all for your kind and considerate comments and advice in this matter. Jozie will require a delicate adjustment to her new home and I look forward to working with her and earning her trust.

Go to the Basenji Club of America's web site (BCOA). To find Basenji breeders go to the Breeder Directory. Breeders are listed by state. Contact the Breeder Liaison as she keeps an additional list of breeders that do not breed often and do not want their names openly advertised. https://www.basenji.org/index.php/about-basenjis/breeder-directory

@helle-devi Thank you for responding. I have already been in touch with the basenji sisters. I was not aware before I contacted them that they are located in CA. I think the distance between us is too great. If things didn’t work out between my basenji and one of their girls, the distance would be a problem. I did become a member on the Facebook site that you recommended. Thank you so much! I was unaware that such a site existed. Jo Ann

Glad you got your dog! I looked for a thread on her but didn't see it. Please be sure to get her Fanconi tested (NOT the strip tests, but the actual Fanconi DNA test) as soon as possible if she is not already tested. BRAT strip tests but does not DNA and sometimes people get confused and think a clear strop means no Fanconi. Only by doing the DNA will you know.

Please do plenty of research before making a decision to have a Basenji. Where are you in the UK? - if near to me you are welcome to visit my Basenjis and talk Basenji talk. I'm no longer breeding but I think it's important to visit Basenji homes before making decisions. As Benkura says there don't seem to be any female pups available at present. The plus of that is that you've plenty of time to see as many Basenjis as you can. Most breeders are like me and would be pleased for you to visit with their Basenjis.

@MacPack: I can assure you that Robyn's dogs are wonderful! We drove to Atlanta and back (in one day) to get our BRAT girl Nicky when she coordinated our adoption. It's a long day, but well worth it to get a great dog from a wonderful breeder. And gas is just a little over $2 a gallon! Good luck to you, the right dog will find it's way to you. Anne Well thank you, I'm glad you have some positive feedback. Not that I was expecting some negative, but I will see what I can figure out. I did apply to BRAT the other day, So I'm hoping that a little lady comes my way soon! I w ill keep you all updated. Im still trying to get a picture of my boyfriends dog up here, but I can't get email access at my work to post one!
