Pregnant Lana

Deb, I don't think the above applies in Basenjis. I know very many people that had a nice pet, not finished, never shown that started a successful, well respected breeding program…and no one ever crucified them. And I have known some people with an adequate dog that they struggled to finish spending a ton of money, and time who eventually used that dog to start a successful, wel respected breeding program...again, never crucified. It certainly isn't the easiest way to reach the goal, but it is possible...and if someone is committed to learning why should we want to scare them away?
Andrea I think I tried pretty hard to say don't let me scare the person away! And I certainly pointed out the health testing has my admiration.
And I am not saying what you said isn't true about becoming a respected breeder.. in fact it is true in ALL breeds I am sure. Nor, btw, do I think if you have to spend a fortune to finish a dog that is marginal it is any better than the pet owner with a better dog who simply didn't have the money to finish. And both a heck of a lot better than those who have the titles but don't health test or do and don't report the bad results! I just mean breeding a pet without proving it is not the best way.
But I have to say as limited of time as I have spent with Basenji breeders, I have heard many comments about breeding pets, calling people "glorified puppy mills" (even with titles and testing), accusations of hidden genetic issues, paying/bribing/politics to finish champions, breeding unfit dogs etc. I think Basenji breeders are overall a nice bunch, but to suggest there are not harsh judgments and snarking isn't reality.
And again, I am heartened by her commitment to finding a good stud, stand behind her pups, and do all the testing. That's a very good start. So again, don't be put off by me.

Of course there are always people in any sport, group, society or otherwise that are willing to imagine the worst, or succumb to jealousy, or participate in bashing just for sport…but in the basenji world, most bashing is kept between friends, or quietly mentioned in innuendo....not what I would call crucifying. People in any breed who plan to have successful breeding programs need to have a thick skin for criticism by their rivals...and they need to be able to stand behind their decisions. But, from what I have seen MOST other breeds have far more outward nastiness than ours.

Andrea, I agree. I have had nothing but good experiences with Basenji breeders!
