I think I need a tranquilizer…

Basenji Talk
  • … because it's 2.5 days and counting, until Kipawa reaches our home! Our breeders, about 5.5 hours away from us by vehicle, will be bringing him to his forever home this Sunday. Food purchased? Yes - Taste of The Wild Bison and Taste of the Wild Salmon. Toy box? Really full, and I have slept with all of the toys, rubber balls, Kongs, etc. to get my smell on them. And it is not easy for a human to hug a hard rubbery Kong all night. And no, I did not put peanut butter in it first.

Our home? Really well doggie proofed, though there was minimal clutter before so hubby couldn't crash into stuff with his wheelchair. :) Nothing under the kitchen sink except for a very interesting trash can that we are willing to put in backwards so it can't be opened. Any soaps, cleaning products, etc. in cupboards in the laundry room that are about at 5 feet height.

Puppy classes - booked! We begin January 22. Doggie beds? Ummm.... so far three of them. All extremely soft with shearling on them. :) Humans excited? CHECK!

  • Oh My. You've got me really excited about too. :D

You are in for a lot of fun (and mischief). I hope you have many happy years together - and we want lots of photos :)

LOL. How sweet. Your enthusiasm is infectious.

  • Got me excited too!! I'm sure Kipawa will let you know right away if anything has been forgotten. :D We expect pics right away.

I have to ask about your signature.

Does BAB = Bonkers About Basenjis? :D

  • You sound like you are a lot more prepared than I ever was…and I'm a planner. :D

One thing you might want to add to your "continued" shopping list if you don't already have one (I'm not on here that much anymore or I would have posted sooner), but google "snuggle puppy". Lisa (lvoss) suggested it a couple years ago and I bought one for when puppy Aaliyah joined my family at 11 weeks. It was a godsend for a new puppy in a new home in a new crate. It took about 6 months before she ever chewed on it and then after that it went downhill fast. Prior to that, she had lots of stuffed toys that she destuffed, but never the snuggle puppy. I was sad when it went as it meant my girl had grown up.

I know you'll be fine and have lots of fun.

Very close, Dan. :) BAB = Basenjis Are Best :)
Before I went to the Seattle dog show last spring, I made up business cards to hand to breeders I spoke to, so that they would remember me. Well, I have a quirky sense of humour, so I thought of the "BAB" and put it on the cards. In the least, they would remember me as an oddball who loves basenjis. :)

Keep the suggestions coming! I am going to have a look at the snuggle puppy now.
Oh dear, out of stock until the spring. :(

  • You sound well prepared Fran and I'm sure if anything is forgotten Kipawa will soon let you know. Can't wait for the pictures!!!

  • Seems to me you have everything in control for Kipawa's arrival! I wonder that you need a tranquilizer now though - it's been my experience that AFTER the B comes home is when the need for tranquilizer's the most! LOL

  • I'm so excited for you :)

  • So, so, so, so, soooooo excited for you! Can't wait to hear all the stories and see all the pictures!!!!

  • I'm curious as to what you think you're going to do with the dog beds. Don't you know basenjis sleep in what will soon used to be known as your bed. Are you sure you've researched the breed at all?

Here's a link to some puppy things:

I had this book when I got Zest:

it's been a while since i read it, but seems like i liked it (actually i ended up getting 2 copies)

Oh, and a good camera. i didn't see that on your list

  • Kipawa- It isn't the same as the snuggle puppy but places like Petco supply a product called Petstages Puppy Cuddle Pal, I don't know if any place near you would carry such an item but it has the heat element that the Snuggle puppy does but not the heartbeat. Just a thought since it was brought up. I am so excited for you, and a little jealous- I still have a few more weeks to go!

  • I'm so excited for you!!! I can't wait to see pictures!!!

    Very true!
Although they do have other uses besides something comfy to lay on while crated. Cody uses his dog bed as a toy to drag, throw, and defluff. I used to replace them every few months, but now I just restuff it and sew it back up. It looks like a franken-bed.

  • Ha! A frankenbed! I gave up trying to provide Abbey with a soft comfy bed. Every time I restuffed it and sewed it back up she would unstuff it and climb inside it like it was some kind of snuggle sack.

  • Yes, there are beds galore here - mostly because of the 3 cats we had/have. We are now down to 2 cats with Barney's passing. The beds we have are a very good size (big for the cats) so hopefully Kipawa will use them at some point. But quite honestly, if he naps with me while I sit on the couch, I will be more than happy! :) And I am sure at some point these beds will become frankenbeds. Love that term!

  • New avatar today, folks. That is puppy Kipawa a few weeks back!

I had a great conversation with Therese this morning. Kevin will be here tomorrow in the early morning. Therese kindly asked if we would be up. Up? Like she thinks we will be able to sleep tonight?

Kipawa is about 10 lbs. right now. And he already has a love for agility coursing - he loves the tube! So our backyard will be transformed into a smaller version agility course this spring. Our trainer does agility, so once he goes through puppy obedience and once his bone plates are stronger, I'll sign him up for agility.

He already knows a number of commands - sit/stay, door, go to mat and others.

Lots of little things to do today as final prep for his arrival. :)
    Happy New Year to everyone!

@Gabriel: I have a small travel type crate that I put Noel in while we are away from home and at night. she is 14 weeks. She is really getting to big for this. What types of crates do you keep your B's in? I am looking at a medium size cage type kennel. 30L x 19W x 21H inches I want to be sure she has plenty of room to lay down in it. What is your advice? i got a crate big enough 4 a large dog. like a lab or something simular. I had 2 get the travel crate because in a wire crate she would pull things into the crate and eat it. comforters rugs you name it. She even ate her bed. fluff everywhere.

Although my DH gets yearly "puppy lust", my personal rule is "I don't take any basenji under 2". By 2, their brains have developed and their attention span is longer than a nanaosecond (where you are concerned). They still have plenty of youthful energy but are not uncontrollable maniacs bent on destruction. That said, I confess I get puppy-lust myself, they are just so cute and funny and adorable. That is how they live to adulthood! Anne in Tampa

She-Ra goes to the door, then looks over her shoulder at us. Problem is, sometimes she's playing a game with us, where she just wants to see if we'll get up and open the door. We're putting a stop to that by putting her out forcibly if she starts to walk away so she knows if we get up to open the door she's going out. Period.
