Idea for a big running area for Kipawa

Basenji Talk

  • When Kipawa gets here, he will not have a home with many acres to run on. He will just have our own 'regular' back yard (we live in a cul-de-sac).

So a thought popped into my head last night - we live in an area that has farmland, acreages, etc. all around us. Would it be an idea to ask the owners if I can let Kipawa run like crazy on their land? Of course I would check out the area completely, land and fencing. Has anyone on here ever done this? What about putting an ad on Craigslist? I could offer a small stipend and of course would pick up all poops.

    Always appreciate your ideas/comments.

  • We have a really small back yard.. and Tillo does fine with his walks.. He never runs throught the house or yard, so I wouldn't worry about the size of your yard if you walk him enough ;)

It would be fun though to let Kipawa run loose in safe places, so if you can use farmland for that… I would go for it and ask the owners!

Oh My….. wait till his baby sister comes... I think the "running" through the house just might change....:D

NO RUNNING IN MY HOUSE!! (;) just kidding of course.. :p)

He does run around with Pip.. but I have to say.. I think I'm pretty good at getting them tired.. so they mostly sleep after a good walk.. And he never really ran around with Lycia. Some wrestling on the couch and that would be it.

  • Fran are there any dog parks near you that let you sign up an area for private use? Those are popular here.

If your yard is big enough for a run, fetch, chase… or you take your pup for a few long walks a day and play a lot, you should be fine. My fenced yard is only something like 54 ft by 30 and my dogs have plenty of running area.

  • There are a few of us with city dogs, or for a better definition: no private backyard. We are lucky to live close to a secure nature walk so Lycia gets her running out that way. But before when I lived in Paris, it was walks walks walks - a few hours kept her happy.

All my two girls do is run… inside/outside, wet, sun, heat... they don't care... the minute you think they should be exhausted off they go again... even after a day of lure coursing (just a lot of practices at this age)... 10 minutes after getting home they are off again... either chasing the squirrels or each other.....

Debra, unfortunately there are no private use dog parks here. What a wonderful idea that is though. I plan on 1-2 walks a day and play time in our yard. Then probably a day on the weekend for play at the dog park (well fenced). But I just think the idea of having a nice big area to really run "crazy" free is wonderful.

Sorry for going off topic Fran!

Fran..we do have a very nice size 2 acre yard..now..but before that we used to take Otis (whom we don't have anymore..:( ) and Moses (the podengo wonderboy) to this huge 600+ acre farm my hubby hunts dove on..they would run free..very close to us, if they even remotely took of, the leash would go back on..Otis never attempted to leave, he was a momma's boy, Moses however, loved to chase the cows..but never did take off far.
I think you could ask the farms around your area..the dog won't hurt the grounds at all…and it will be fun for you too, to see him more free..

    ..and Janneke, I can't wait either :):)

HA! My "wise adult", the 13 year old boy was just racing around the house with his 1 year old son spring boarding off the back of the sofa just like the youngster.

  • We have a small yard but our dogs don't seem to mind. They do race around inside the house, will play outside too but prefer to be where ever we are.

My Basenjis are 6 and 3. We live in Florida and I usually run with them 1-2, sometimes 3 miles. My run is still just a trot for them, but I let them stop and sniff and potty whenever they need/want, and I just do squats while they do it :). On the 3-milers, I am sure to bring water or let them stop and drink at the beach which is the turn around point. I also wet them down before hand.

Whenever we love on Sahara with hugging, kissing her sweet face, cuddling, she will immediately get up and shake it off. It is so funny, it's like she is saying I love you guys but please I am only a Basenji, not your baby. Maybe she understand when we call her, Our Baby Girl, hehe!!!!!:D

If a pill is bitter, I coat it with butter then put it in cream cheese. If the dog is getting suspicious, I put the cream cheese in some canned dog food (a rare treat) and give each dog a bite, then the pill covered with he dog food in round 2. Once they taste a bitter pill, they will never eat whatever the pill was in again! Anne
