Laika, the squirrel chaser

Basenji Talk

  • We have a lot of trees and squirrels are everywhere. Laika goes crazy, when she sees one. Started her on the Easy Leader halter. She does not like it a lot, but her walks are much easier. She does not pull anymore, except when she sees a squirrel. Even the halter will not stop her. Have tried different halters and harnesses, but the Easy Leader seems to do the job best.
What are most of you using on your basenji's? My husband prefers the flexie, but I think, she is taking him for a walk really. He believes she needs the freedom. She gets three walks a day and will only poop in the dog park here.
    I will add some photo's

  • Ella has proven time again not to be trusted on the flexi leash. As you said, she takes us for a walk at that point. She is allowed off leash in many circumstances so she gets her freedom. We use a regular 6 foot leash with an Easy Walk harness. We used the Easy Walk with some sucess in controlling her pulling as a puppy, but now we actually use it turned upside down so it clips on top just like a regular harness. We just like the way it fits and goes on and off.

  • Going to duct tape hands about having dogs off leash.

Marli, there are many problems with flexi leads including a dog too far from you should another animal charge. Work on loose leash walking so the dog doesn't pull and husband doesn't feel need to use one.

That said, squirrels and chipmunks. Mine lose their minds when they see them. I use a leash they can't bite because Arwen would almost chew her legs off to get to one, but has learned the basenji proof lead won't give. Thanks to Jack Austin for telling me how to make one!

Thank you Suzee. They had fun with the squirrel after they found it. I like watching that Python Hunters show that is on OLN about the invasive species of snakes in FL. It is a good show and it does show us how we have disrupted the ecosystem by introducing non native species to different parts of the world. I have not seen a squirrel in the yard for a couple of weeks now, it's great! Once I get the rest of the acreage fenced in they can go into the back pasture and hunt mice through the grass. We don't have a lot of rabbits out here but in the summer time I will take pics of their new place to run!

@renaultf1: lol - what is the craziest thing you have bought for your dog? A purse. Lol Hahaha… Well I got this dog food/toys/stuff catalog in the mail. They have nail polish for dogs, in about 5000 different colors and shades, and those little glittery stickers that you put over the nail polish. Purse is nothing!

@ibi_n_sane: I think your dogs are giving you a silent hint to change their food into BARF ;-) I would not worry about the squirrels, frankly if they were in good shape of body and mind they would not be caught by a basenji ;-) That's what worries me!

our garden is loaded with fieldmouses at the moment…. my B's do not care very much but my Ibizan hounds snack them all the time, sometimes they bring one inside for me to have, as a present, and they look quite offended when they notice I throw their delicious present in the garbage can ....

I don't have such a problem with the squirrels but just the neighbors - some are pretty sloppy when they put out the trash on collection day and bits and pieces are always hiding in the grass when EL D and I come by on our walks the next day or the next day or the next day. I always worry that someday he'll scarf down something that could be dangerous before I can get it out.

@tanza: Here is a story you all will appreciate… I was showing Fatia and looking for Majors to get her finished. I was at a show down So. Ca and there was this really nice park close to the motel where we were staying.. so in the afternoon we would go for a nice long walk... I had Kristii with me for company for Fatia.. and both were on Flexi's.. well there were millions of squirrels in that park... and the girl caught sight of one pretty darn close to them... and both took off after the squirrel.. dead ahead was a huge Oak Tree.... YOU guessed it... one went on one side of the tree and one to the other side.... Guess who went "smack" into the tree??? LOL…too funny! :D
