Hello from Orlando, Fl! (Still looking to adopt)

  • I saw those pups when they were in the Atlanta area. Which one was Kismet, the one originally called Butter or Jelly?

  • Butter was her name. She's the one with no white on her face and one small spot on the back of her neck.

Found out I might have to try one of those puppy bumpers, http://www.puppybumpers.net/ Anyone have experience with it and younger dogs/basenji types? She got stuck between the fence when we closed up the bigger openings and watched her from outside to see how she did :( Maybe we should have stuck with the name Butter LOL. She does great with the car rides tho, most of the time going right to sleep. Never had a dog relax so fast in a car so I had to poke her a couple times when we started home yesterday cause I was afraid something was wrong!

  • I'd never heard of a puppybumper before but I'm sure a Basenji would soon find the way to 'lose' one. I certainly wouldn't leave Kismet unsupervised just relying on the 'bumper' to stop her getting out!!

  • Nope I wouldn't even think of it. We'll just have to supervise her from "inside" the yard to keep her attention there instead of outside. Think that's the only reason she tried to get out and got stuck.

  • First Basenji's

Very cool that you got one of those pups. I was following their progress on Facebook. Glad to see some are going to caring homes of fellow forum members. =)

  • LOL those puppybumpers would make a basenji chew toy. You may have to fortify the fence, not her.

  • Yup, puppybumpers…any self respecting Basenji would have that in shreads in oh, lets say 30 seconds or less...

  • I'm a bit disappointed in my sweet sweet girl. She barked, no yodel or baroo for me I guess :( Maybe I can run some of the basenji youtube vids and see if I can't tempt it out of her. It's a cute bark tho, she starts out as a whisper then gets a lil louder.

My little girl will only yodel for her daddy. No yodels for mom (me). :(
I feed her, train her, buy her pretty collars, make nice coats for her, make sure she had clean blankies in her bed, give her treats, etc, etc. All hubby does is walk in the door.

  • aww. Well I was played some of the youtube basenji videos and one had her running downstairs barking, another she barked back at it but most she just listened to with a confused look on her face. Maybe it was the surround sound heh

  • LOL agile, Sayblee did yodel for me but much more for the spousal unit. Arwen doesn't do it at all and at 8 not likely to happen. Cara has had one almost yodel. :( She does musical yawns a lot though, and barks. Well more like boofs.

Welcome and so sorry to hear about the health issues of your two B's…. Thank you for opening up your home to them... And Thank Goodness we now have DNA tests for Fanconi so that no Basenji ever has to suffer with this horrible affliction.

MacPack - Was it around 10-11 a.m? We were out there then :) We live very close by and I love taking her out to Bayshore to run her around. We usually try to go in the evenings after work so she can run out all that puppy energy :) I'm so bummed we didn't make it today! We woke up to a downpour over here that didn't end until almost noon. We had planned on going, though! We took her to the Davis Island dog beach and she had a good time! If the weather is nice, we'll be at West Dog Park next Sunday! I'm so excited to introduce her to other basenjis! Sharronhurlbut - a few other people have mentioned bull terrier as well, because of the nose. I can definitely see it but wondering if she'd be bigger since they get around 40-50 pounds? We're almost tempted to do a doggie DNA test to find out :)

I look forward to your pictures. I'm a technophobe too - I keep telling myself I can do it but so far haven't posted any. One of my bitches was spoiled for the show ring by such a judge who didn't know how to approach a hound (although he was a Saluki judge and should have!). She was experienced at showing as well but was traumatised because when she backed away at his front on, silly voice approach she nearly fell from the table! Of course she blamed the fall on his approach. I worked on her intensively but to no avail. Yes, Basenjis on the whole are friendly and they never forget a friend either!

@WriggleysMom: We've always had rescues and I feel like I've missed out on puppy antics, so I'm debating. Toby doesn't baroo or wag his tail and I really miss being met at the door with a welcome baroo and a tail trying to wag itself off!! I had a puppy and was getting the urge for another but now we have a 7-mo old foster and I can't take my eyes off her. I remembered I really did not miss that!
