Miss Quiet and Mr Noise maker

Basenji Talk
  • My first B Zoe is so quiet. She can and does yodel but only rarely. She let out a sort of bark twice when she was startled and will whine on occation. But for the most part she is so quiet it is eery. Then 4 months ago we got Chief. He usually yodels several times a day which is great lol. But he also screams like the star of a horror movie when he is startled. He wants everything Zoe has (doesn't matter that he didn't want it before as soon as she wants it so does he) he will badger her with whines and strange noises until she walks away in disgust letting him have it. Not even sure who is dominant here. Anyway with all the noises he makes he also barks quite often. When Hubby tells him NO! he will turn around and bark like he is telling him off. When he wants zoe or another dog to play he barks. Then sometimes out of the blue he up and barks. Hubby swears he's a mutt lol. I know he isn't but he is so different from Zoe in size, shape, coat and temperament people sometimes think I have 2 types of dogs. He definitely lives up to the name my daughter gave him Mischief!

How many have Bs that bark?

  • I believe you were warned about the consequences of naming him Mischief. :-)
They always live up to a name like that!

Yep, what she said. I tell everyone I named Zest that because she adds color and flavor to my life, but really I picked the name out before I got her. The name popped into my head and I said "I want my next agility basenji to be named Zest!" So, blame your daughter.

  • Hmmm I wonder what he would be like if I got my way and named him magic or even mystic? Actually he answers to mystic because it sounds so much like mischief.

  • His sister barks… and really makes different noises.... so it is in the bloodlines... she is right now telling Franie that she wants what she has... and it is between squeaks, barks, and other interesting noises..... just follow the family...gggg

  • It that C Me get what I want Tanza? lol C Me Roar :). Can I change his name now?

Well, then things would just disappear.

  • Sonny has only every barked at one person since he was a puppy….my mother .....he barks at her every time we go visit the house or he see her anywhere..and he barks & yodels till he feels she's given him enough attention! people always get a kick out of it when they see it because other wise he never makes a sound :p

@AJs: K, another story I alluded to somewhere else: AJ and I were in Bradenton, Florida spending the night one time waiting for a load. I took him for a nice long walk and on our way back to the truck, there was a Cuban family (Mom, Dad and about 4-year-old boy) who were watching AJ. AJ just loves children, so I asked if it would be okay for him to say "HI" to the little boy. The mom told me he was terrified of dogs because apparently when he was tiny, he was bitten. We were standing about 15 feet apart and I was keeping AJ on a tight lead right next to my leg. The little boy was peeking out from behind his mommy's leg, just staring at AJ with those huge black eyes. As his mom and I were talking, he edged out slowly from behind her leg…slowly....slowly... AJ just sat down and waited for him. Eventually, the little boy worked up the courage and approached AJ on his own. After a few minutes, he was petting AJ and getting licks and loves from my dog. His mom was so astounded all she could do was stand there and stare. His dad said something in Spanish to his wife, then Mom translated, "We never thought he'd ever be next to a dog. He's always been so afraid of them. This is good!" Cheers Way to go AJ!!

I recently returned from a week's vacation and picked up Gossy from her "vacation" (she stayed with the breeder). She was happy there but still happy to see me. When we got home though she was just crazy - running everywhere, couldn't chase enough squirrels, throwing blankets and pillows off couches and beds - I didn't know whether she was happy to be home or just getting back at me :D

Our little girl, Nami, is very vocal. She has a special greeting for us whenever we come home. And if we reach into the treat jar but don't give her the treat in a timely manner, we hear about that too… she scolds us for being too slow. Nami will also "talk" to the other dogs at the bark-park when they won't play with her. Our boy, Radar, is just the opposite. We refer to him as "The strong, silent type." He doesn't say much, but when he does, it is very loud! He usually sounds off when he and his sister are wrestling, then Nami breaks away to hide under the dining room table. He'll stand in the middle of the room and let loose with a resounding "bah-rooooooo."
