Basenji Rescue

  • I let the BRAT person in Ca know..in case they didn't see this ad.
Thanks so much for sharing it so we can see what we can do for these b's.

    3-year-old male in Arizona:
    http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/pet/1796135294.html

"Blake is a three year old male Basenji. He is a purebred, trindle colored Basenji (tri color with brindle). We rescued him a year and a half ago, and for the most part he is a sweet boy. He was left in his kennel for up to 16 hours a day from his previous owner. He had issues with his kennel but will now go to "bed" (his kennel) on command, sometimes needs a little snack for coaxing! He normally gets along with our other male Basenji, but there appears to be a dominance issue between the two as they have not been getting along as well. We feel that Blake would be happier in a single dog family where he can get the love and attention he deserves.

E-mail for details about the re-homing fee. He would like to keep his food dish, bed, kennel. We don't have any problem with that and will include his AKC paperwork as well. (he is neutered so don't get any ideas)"

  • Thanks I sent them a note. Will let BRAT know, if they haven't see this.

I would not say that this is a rescue situation. Looks to me like they are responsible people (since they already have a Basenjis), know the breed and are just looking to place this boy in a better situation where there is not conflict with another male?

  • Hi everyone I am new to this forum and have tried many avenues for finding Rocky a home. He is a wonderful adult basenji, 5yrs old, tan and white. I have been "fostering" him for about a year now trying to find him the RIGHT home. I recently joined the Army and I can no longer care for him. I have tried BRAT but they are full.

If anyone is interested, please let me know.

  • Ladybug, I would love to help you out but Florida is a long ways away from where I live. I hope you find a wonderful home for him but I'm already jealous of his new owners.

  • Who in BRAT told they are full?

  • Ladybug do you have any idea who Rocky's breeder is? If so, perhaps they may be willing to take him back?

  • I have never been told that BRAT is full.

Two females and one male, females birthdate Dec. 6, 2003 and the male is Dec. 2, 2002. The male is not related to the females. All three are AKC registered with papers on hand. Selling all three because my nephew is no longer interested in them cause he is roping now.

  • Wow, breaks my heart when I hear that someone purely "doesn't want their dog" (or any animal) any more. Animals should not be viewed as a 'hobby' that can change on a whim.

As for the other basenji, he looks lovely. We have a calm house, no kids, 3 cats and both adults at home all day. I wish I was in a position to help this fellow out, but the timing is not right for right now as one of our 3 senior cats is in lots of discomfort with an arthritic back. I will send a message out into the cosmos to hope for a forever home for him.

  • First Basenji's

I'm really nervous about the second one, actually. It looks like a BYB kit for sale, complete with a run-down looking kennel… "The male is not related to the females."

  • I did let BRAT's OK coordinator know about these guys.

  • Its awful to see how these bs in OK are kept..shame on that owner…

    My feelings exactly

  • Has anyone contacted the seller in OK? The city is near where all those OK breeders I spoke about in another thread is located, Stigler, Keota, Spiro and Poteau which is where the Bs are/were available at the shelter. I wonder if these Bs are related. They could go back to the WL's Bs from Tahlequah, OK, that were sold at a couple of dog auctions.

  • First Basenji's

I would have no idea what to say or how to approach the owner, especially if the intention is to diplomatically convince him (the nephew?) to surrender the basenjis to BRAT instead of selling them. I admire the person who would be able to do so.

Thank you, Joanne, for contacting BRAT's OK coordinator.

  • Please always let BRAT know when you see such things.

  • I just received an email from the owner of the 3 basenjis in Oklahoma; they are still "available"… does BRAT ever buy dogs to get them out of their horrible situations, so that they can find them happy homes? :(

I had to re-home my darling red/white Basenji named Isis, a 1.5 year old spayed girl, in July of 2012. My living circumstances were economically altered and I could no longer give her the care she needed and deserved. I kept in touch with the gentleman who adopted her but recently found out that he re-homed again without letting me know. He can't or won't provide me with any information regarding the adoption. Astounding to me, as now I am quite distraught. I have all of the vet records for her and wanted to get in touch with the new family to provide information and support. I am not interested (or rather can't anyway) reclaim her, so I don't want said family to worry about that type of situation. I just want to keep in touch but not interfere. I only want to keep in touch and would be most grateful for any response that may be out there for her. I appreciate you taking time to read this and hope that you can lend a hand. I would be in your debt.

Jennifer, I meant Pam the breeder here in MA… I figured this might be one of her boys because of proximity to each other... If this is an Eldorado boy then Pam will definitely want to intervene and get the dog back. I emailed her the link and she will deal with it if it's one of hers.

Dear Basenji Forums Community, I am sure many of you have been wondering what was the outcome of this rescue effort. Well, let us tell you it was unexpected. A rescue mission that was supposed to unite our community to help save a dog turned into a complete opposite and brought us apart. I would like to thank everyone who stepped in to help and put their time and money to attempt to save this dog and offer him a life without neglect. Members who volunteered themselves for this mission had many years of experience with the breed, with both ill-tempered rescues, and those that have been fabulous. They had enough experience to make a determination whether to attempt this or not. While this dog had issues it is imperative to keep in mind he was a just a puppy, and someone was willing to give him a chance. Others may have disagreed on the reasoning for attempting this, but at no time they were given the right to derail this mission and use this forum to publicly attack and discredit members whose only intentions were to help save this dog. As a result of the actions of certain members our whole community suffered: The dog was not saved Forum rules about code of conduct were broken Existing members were publicly offended and discredited New members were exposed to public arguments Our community lost potential member referrals Members had to be suspended from the forum It is really too bad and sad, because we built this community to bring together basenji owners, breeders, and exhibitors throughout the world. To be hopeful that they could help one another and dogs in need. Thank you again for trying to help. All donation have been refunded and no more assistance will be attempted. Which, of course, is unfortunate for the basenji in need. As a last note please remember to review our forums code of conduct and forum rules and to treat others with utmost respect. Like the Basenjis, each of us is unique with our unique character, but our admiration and respect for this breed have brought us together and make us a community. Disregard for our forum community rules will not be tollerated on this forum. Please contact Basenji Forums staff directly at admin@basenjiforums.com if you have any questions or concerns. This thread is closed for public discussion.
