Help with Puppy

    We adopted Niles our Basenji from the SPCA and he is approx. 6and a 1/2 months old. He has been thru puppy training at the St. Pete Dog Club but still needs some help. (as do we) We are trying to find a trainer in the Tampa Bay area that is familiar with Basenji's. We really love him but want to be sure he gets the proper training. Since he was a rescue dog he has socialization issues along with other problems. Please help.

    So many things. The main thing is the biting. We have tried many options to get him to stop. Pretty much to no avail. He is also a chewer. Paper, electrical cords, carpet, the list goes on. Because he was a rescue from SPCA he has not been socialized. We have tried a class, but he was scared to death. He is so adorable and we love him so much. We just want Niles and ourselves to be trained properly so we will have a great family.

    If you got him from the St. Pete SPCA, he is likely one of the infamous Holland dogs (30 plus basenjis rescued last year in Hillsborough county) and they are very human-shy and unsocialized, but with some work they turn out great, we know of 2 who are several years old now who are great dogs.

    6 1/2 months is rough age, with chewing and hard play biting, even for home raised, socialized pups! When we have had pups, we cried out when they would bite too hard, startle them then redirect them. Also remember, a tired basenji pup is a good (or at least tolerable) basenji! Good luck. We have a friend in Safety Harbor who has a trainer she likes, and has worked with her 2 basenjis, one of whom was pretty unsocialized when she rescued her.

    how long have you had him?
    Biting can take months to curb! Its really a matter of consistency and patience, i know it is hard!! I would highly recommend finding a good behaviourist in your area to teach you the neccessary tools to get him to be a confident great dog

    jeannieJ, is your dog tattooed? You might at least be able to find out something about him if he is. Breeding is not a good idea unless you are experienced, know all about the breed's history and health concerns, and are willing to be responsible for any resulting puppies for the rest of their lives!

    Wondering how your two are taking to each other now. We've had Bongo for just over 3 weeks - seems like so much longer - and he and Fiji are now a real team. Wish I'd had the camera handy last night when they were sleeping on the couch with Bongo draped over Fiji. (The first week they'd share the couch but at far opposite ends.) They walk together, run together and share toys and bowls. She still puts him in his place if he messes with her crate, or crosses some other line that only the b's know and understand, but he takes it like a dog. I'm actually surprised, and thrilled of course, that they bonded so quickly. How are yours coming along?

    @lvoss: I PM'd you with contact information for Asil's Walkabout by ElDorado's breeder. I really urge you to contact her about the history of the dog. It is good that you are doing the research now so you can get a puppy that you will enjoy for a long time to come from a breeder who will be there to support you through all the ups and downs of basenji ownership. There are many resources availalbe through this forum to help you find a responsibly bred puppy. I e mailed her after I got your IM. Hope to hear back from her in the next day or so.

    @nobarkus: If you do need to have your Bs go on thyroid, get it from Omaha Vaccine. It's very cheap at about .02/tab compared to the vet at $1/tablet. That's where I got mine. They will need your vets OK for the prescription. www.omahavaccine.com Both my german shepherd mix (spayed) and B (neutered) were on soloxine for many years. I got it very reasonably priced from my vet–it wasn't $1/tablet--are you sure it was that expensive? Tyler and Zoey had their thyroids tested, and both are in normal range at this time. My other two were probably middle aged when they had to start thyroid pills. I never used a generic--only soloxine--and it seemed to work fine--I'd get their thyroids tested periodically--but the dose never needed to be adjusted for them.

    I actually have experience with this. I placed a dog with someone who - in spite of what I said about they can NEVER be off leash, they thought that way out in the country with an electronic collar would be fine. They didn't notice that the batteries were weak, gravel truck down road, basenji dead. Basenjis are not an off leash dog - they are hunters and if they see it or smell it they are gone. NO you cannot train that out of them. They have been hunters for thousands of years and will ALWAYS revert to that. re: allergies. Here is something that I do when people say they have allergies. Use a cotton swab (q-tip) to swab inside the dogs mouth and set on a paper towel. Take a very fine tooth come and scrape on the skin of the dog in several different places and wipe off the skin dander and hair (even if you get a little) on the paper towel as well. Fold it up and put it under the pillow of the person with the allergies. If they break out or have a runny nose - the dog most likely won't work for you.

    fender has lots of taji dogs in his pedigree! i have seen katie at shows, her dogs are beautiful Especially the black and whites!!!!! :) lucky you
