Basenji Tears

Basenji Talk
  • Well, if they do cry tears, it is just one more thing that makes the basenji unique and one more reason why we all love them. I think I would break down and sob myself if I saw a basenji crying.

  • I have heard of the tears but dont think I have ever seen them. I remember when my dad was going to be bringing home our first B in the 70s he told me that this dog cries real tears, yodels and laughs a little like a Hyena. Not sure what the laugh was supposed to be. The tears? I remember reading a story, I thought on brat, where the woman had got her B around the time she lost her mother and the dog cuddled and cried tears with her. I dont think I have ever seen the tears, though like shannanigan have seen the gunk in the eyes.

  • The first basenji I ever had way back about 1970 did cry real tears when she'd get into trouble and get scolded. She was a R&W named Pumpkin because she was the color of one, and we got her from the Humane Society for $3 dollars! This was before the internet and nobody knew what she was. My vet figured out she was a basenji.

  • Blaze cried real tears when he was a puppy and got stuck in the mechanics of the lazy boy couch. He screamed until we flipped the couch over and tried to push him out, then the real tears came when Dad left to get the tools and continued until we dismanteled the couch and released him.
    He hasn't cried since.

  • The day I got Cody, on the way home, he "cried". I'm not sure if it's exactly what you mean by tears, as he didn't seem to be "scared" or anything like that. I thought it was weird and was actually afraid he had an eye infection, but the vet said he was healthy in that department. You can see them in one of the pictures I took on the way home, if this is what you mean.

Aww you just want to wipe his tears away

  • My Tyler has never cried but my Kate has. Usually when we pick her up after having to board them. Breaks my heart :(

  • We had a Basenji when I was a child. This was in 1964 that we brought him home. He lived 13 years. Jodi cried real tears twice. Once after his pancreatic surgery and he came home after being at the vets for a week. Once after my mom came home after being in the hospital for 5 days. He had tears running down his face. He would baroo when happy to see us or we were getting ready to take him on a walk, grumble under his breath when corrected, snarl at people he did not like (almost everyone not family), howl when left alone, talk to us to get our attention, and learned to bark, once, when he saw something that really excited him. For a supposedly quiet dog, he sure made some noise! I loved that dog so much and to this day, I miss him terribly.

  • i think there was something about this in the Goodbye My Lady book, but it's been years since i read it

  • I have never seen it, but this is an interesting thread.

  • IMO (I am a total animal lover, not yet a basenji owner) I would not be surprised at all if a basenji cried real tears. I truly believe animals have a higher sense of things - that they can 'smell' emotions, illness, etc. and can display their feelings more easily than we think. We humans just have to look for this.

What a lovely story, thanks for sharing.

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!
