Three Good Basenjis

Basenji Talk
  • After three hours playing at the dog park today, we decided to stop at an "event" at a local park, "Talking Animals". There was music, animal themed songs, and about 20 booths representing everything from different rescue groups to jewelry, a dog sketch artist (wish I had her do one of Topper), agility demos, all sorts of things. Almost everyone had their dog with them and we only saw a couple of snarks. My three were wonderful, sniffing noses and meet-and-greet with many dogs and kids. We were the only basenjis and a few people recognized the breed and they were good ambassadors. We got some food samples, a tennis ball, treat samples, and best if all we got a $10 coupon from our local pet food store, yea!

My three old guys have slept all afternoon after all their excitement at the doggie-fair!

What an awesome sounding day! Sounds like you all had a really great time. Can you scan the sketch? We'd all love to see it.

  • What a fun time. Those are great events. We have them here, but the last one was not as organized as yours sounds it was. Still, people put in effort, and the dogs always seem to enjoy the get-together.

  • Sorry Dan, I wish I HAD gotten a sketch done, but sadly did not. Only regret of the day! My guys were hot and ready to go home.

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

@weedtrek Possibly Basenji mix, nose looks a bit wider and the eyes are less oval. Could well be a Basenji mix though.

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

I'm not sure why your pictures are not showing up. I'm going to experiment. [image: 1467823614030-bathtimex.jpg] O.K. that seems to work. I dragged and dropped it and I see it. Now to check whether others can also see it! This is a picture of my two girls, taken a long time ago......probably in the '80s. I am wondering if the picture you are trying to upload is too big. Trying that now. I am not seeing the picture I just uploaded, so that may be the problem. ![0_1467823932526_Bathtime.jpg](Uploading 100%) Yes, I think that is the key. Downsize your picture and I bet it will work properly. As you see, I get the same uploading message that you did, but no picture, when I try to upload a large file.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol
