  • you know guys i been thanking lastnight, the lady at the pet shop and the vet office next store want to do a blood test, when i told the vet do you spcial lise in basenji's he said no, but we aren't accociated with the pet shop either!!. thats'like a red flag to me and when i told him about a blood gas test ,he said ya, i know what that is, but we were going to do a blood test and urine test. but the lady at the pet shop is going to pay for it!. thats'another red flag for that tells me that they are accosiated with the pet shop!!. and they could do the testing but they could also lie about the resaults and say he don't have it!!. WHAT WOULD YOU GUYS DO IN THIS SITUATION!, I DON'T HAVE TO GO TO THE VET TILL NONN TODDAY!!. I FEEL LIKE JUST TELLING HER TO GIVE ME 1/2 MY MONEY BACK AND LEAVE IT AT THAT AND FIND A VET THAT KNOWS MORE ABOUT THE BREED!!!. PLEASE GET BACK TO ME ASAP!!.

  • Why are they doing blood test and urine test? They will not show that he is Prob Affected for Fanconi. That is what the DNA test is for. So to me that is a waste of your time if they want to do that to prove that he tested prob affected?

  • thanks tanza! thats'what i'm thanking too right now!!.

  • Just direct the pet shop and/or the breeder to the OFA website where his results are published

  • i called the foundation and got the resault on the phone, it said at risk !, but kath a breeder clled and talked to a guy named john and he didn;t know why they changed it from affected to at risk! but it does mean he is affected!. so i sould just call them aznd cancel both the test then !. and wait till i get the paper in the mail saying the resaults then and she her that then!!./? would you mine is i gave my vet your web site??>

You will not get anything in the mail if Prob Affected, only Clear and Carriers get any type of paper results.
You could just wait till they are posted on the OFA site (www.offa.org) and direct them to the site.

Why would you give the Vet my website?

  • i just checked the web site and i wouldn't come up with his resaults!.

  • so maybe he can learn a few thanks, but if u don't want me to that fine too!, but i will give him this www,ofa.org site!!.

My website is public, anyone can visit it…

  • Sometimes it takes quite awhile for the results to show up on the OFA site.

Fanconi is no longer the quick death sentence it was before Dr. Gonto's protocol, but many many vets are not knowledgeable about it. Dr. Gonto is more than willing to talk with your vet.
Because you have not seen symptoms yet, you may not need to get the blood gases yet. However, I personally would strip test for sugar in the urine more frequently, keeping in mind that some dogs spill intermittently especially in the early stages of the syndrome. The strips are relatively inexpensive and easy to read on your own - you don't need the vet to do this. You can get them at Costco or Sam's Club or any pharmacy. Just make sure you get the Diastix and not the Ketostix.
If you want, you can also join the Yahoo Fanconi Dogs list - just go to Yahoo Groups and look it up for contact info. There are people there with a wealth of experience with Fanconi affected dogs, and it's a wonderful, supportive group!

Don't panic, many dogs live long, happy, fulfilling lives with this syndrome, just love him for as long as you have him.

Terry and the Illusion Pack (6 previous dogs with Fanconi Syndrome, but I will never knowingly breed another!)

  • k thanks tanza!, but when i got on the web site at ofa.org hit don't come up with his resaults!!. when can i do now!!!.

  • Terry,
The Yahoo Fanconi list is only for dogs that are already spilling.

  • thanks tanza, i had company over and could't message back earlyer, but i have the ketone strips! i'm going to get the other one now!!.

  • It generally takes about 4 weeks or so for results to post the OFA site.

  • i'll try to get on that site right now !!, thanks again , i canceled the vet apointment for today, there was a vet that called me tellying that if it is in the early sages that it wouldn't show up in the test!, i got the call as i was reading the message u gave me saying the same thang but i didnt get that far on ur message!. thanks for everythang!!.

Oh My! So sorry! I know if it were Pearl I would be terrified! Poor Baby! I want to cry fo him. If you love him half as much as I love Peal, I'm sure you are devistated. (And I am sure you love him a much as I love Pearl) I pray Shango is fine and has no permanent injuries. Hugs him for me.

@k9collars: I'm not sure you'll be able to stop this problem with the harnesses. Often times, hair loss is from the hairs getting into the weave of the webbing and then it being plucked out. For that problem, you'll need a fabric against their skin that would be of a tight enough weave that the hairs can't get into the weave. Second problem is the friction. The dog is continually in motion rubbing, while the harness is stationary. Back and forth, back and forth. Nylon webbing may not be abrasive when touched, but over time it will have the effect you've noticed. Perhaps a softer lining might work (satin, polar fleece), but over a long distance, it too may have the same result. Time to reach outside the Basenji family to find rollerbladers that take their dogs with them. They must've come across this problem. Nick Lexington, KY Thats what is great about Ruff Wear they really go above and beyond to prevent the friction wear and the hair being pulled out too

Well, Tosca is just fine I think:) I was kinda worried last night, as the emergency vet said it would probably be ok since she only had half a pill, but they said I could call poison control to be sure. Well, that was going to be pretty expensive (55) so I wasn't too crazy calling about half of a pill, plus she seemed ok, and the vet seemed pretty confident. Then this morning I was a little worried again because she wouldn't eat more than about half her food, which is extrememly unusual, she usually gobbles it right up! But I had to go to work, and I called our usual vet on the way and they said it shouldn't be a problem. Luckily, now that I am home tonight she seems fine:) Thanks for the suggestions, we just got Tosca in Feb and this is the first time I have ever had a dog ( I was deathly scared of them as a kid) but she really has grown on me, she is so sweet, and not like a normal dog.

I personally know a Basenji that died from raisin toxicity. It is definitely a real, and serious concern.
