• @pedro:

thks!. it means a lot to me.this little brat is being a BRAT RIGHT NOW WITH HIS FOOD!! HE LIKES TO DUMP IT AND THEN PICK AT IT !!THAT LITTLE STINKER!!.HES'SOOO FUNNY HERE. AND AS A BASENJI OWNER I PROMISE TO ALL OF YOU I WILL DO WHAT EVER I CAN TO MAKE SURE HE LIVES A HEALTHY AND GREAT LIFE HERE!!. I ALREADY HAD TO PUT MY CAT OF 18YRS DOWN JUST LAST YR. AND DAM IF MY FRIEND CALLED ME AND A YR TO THE DATE SHE CALLED AND ASKED ME IF I WANTED A SIEAMEES KITTEN!. IT WAS LIKE MY BABY THUMPER HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THAT, AS U MIGHT HAVE KNOWTEST I'M VERY SPRITUAL PERSON TOO!. AND I GOT HER THANKING SHE WAS HEALTHY BUT FOUND OUT SHE HAD WORMS AND EAR MITES VERY BAD!! STILL TRYING I DON'T EVEN THANK THE KITTEN COULD HEAR!!. THAT MAD ME SOOOO MAD I CALLED THE BIT```AT HIM!!! BUT I'M DEALING WITH IT AND GET THROUGH IT TIME BY TIME, LITTLE BY LITTLE!!. I'M ALSO A HIGHLY ANIMAL LOVER!. THE VET JUST CALLED WAS TO DO A BLOOD TEST AND URINE TEST AND I CALLED HER ABOUT THE PAYING BIT AND SHE IS GOING TO COVER IT!, AND SHE IS STILL TRYING TO GET AHOLD OF THE BREEDER AND GOING TO TALK TO HER HUBAND ABOUT GETTING 1/2 MY MONEY BACK!!!!. I'LL KNOW MORE TOMARROW !.I HAVE 1 QUESTION FOR ANYONE ON HERE, IF A DOG IS AFFACTED, WILL IT SHOW RIGHT AWAY WITH SIGNS OR COULD IT BE DOWN THE ROAD???>BUT EITHER WAY I'M TRYING TO GET ME MONEY BACK!!.I FEEL THAT THE BREEDER ABD THE PET SHOT AR ALL AT FAULT FOR THIS ! THAT EVEN IF THE BREEDER DIDN'T TEST FOR IT THE PET SHOP SHOULD HAVE!!, SHE CAN SAY SHE NEVER HEARD OF THIS FANCONI BUT I DON'T BELEIVE HER ONE BIT!!!.

No the pet shop should not be responsible for testing that is the breeders responsibility… pet shops only buy items for resale, they don't know or care about health

If it was me, I would call the breeder and tell them that they need to stop breeding or do DNA testing at least for Fanconi… but first see what the pet shop can do...

  • I would also tell the breeder your going to report them to the USDA for selling sick animals.
    That should get their attention.

  • Tanza, i will do that and get back to u on it to let u know how it went!!. I will get my money back somehow! Gerinteed!.

  • His breeder is matha reed! Don't ever get a basenji from them!!.

  • oh, sorry! I am new to this forum and did not realize there were other posts to the thread. I apologize. I was commenting on an OLD post about the growling and biting when taking the chewy away… have you thought about small claims court? Do you have a contract from the purchase?

  • you know guys i been thanking lastnight, the lady at the pet shop and the vet office next store want to do a blood test, when i told the vet do you spcial lise in basenji's he said no, but we aren't accociated with the pet shop either!!. thats'like a red flag to me and when i told him about a blood gas test ,he said ya, i know what that is, but we were going to do a blood test and urine test. but the lady at the pet shop is going to pay for it!. thats'another red flag for that tells me that they are accosiated with the pet shop!!. and they could do the testing but they could also lie about the resaults and say he don't have it!!. WHAT WOULD YOU GUYS DO IN THIS SITUATION!, I DON'T HAVE TO GO TO THE VET TILL NONN TODDAY!!. I FEEL LIKE JUST TELLING HER TO GIVE ME 1/2 MY MONEY BACK AND LEAVE IT AT THAT AND FIND A VET THAT KNOWS MORE ABOUT THE BREED!!!. PLEASE GET BACK TO ME ASAP!!.

  • Why are they doing blood test and urine test? They will not show that he is Prob Affected for Fanconi. That is what the DNA test is for. So to me that is a waste of your time if they want to do that to prove that he tested prob affected?

  • thanks tanza! thats'what i'm thanking too right now!!.

  • Just direct the pet shop and/or the breeder to the OFA website where his results are published

  • i called the foundation and got the resault on the phone, it said at risk !, but kath a breeder clled and talked to a guy named john and he didn;t know why they changed it from affected to at risk! but it does mean he is affected!. so i sould just call them aznd cancel both the test then !. and wait till i get the paper in the mail saying the resaults then and she her that then!!./? would you mine is i gave my vet your web site??>

You will not get anything in the mail if Prob Affected, only Clear and Carriers get any type of paper results.
You could just wait till they are posted on the OFA site (www.offa.org) and direct them to the site.

Why would you give the Vet my website?

  • i just checked the web site and i wouldn't come up with his resaults!.

  • so maybe he can learn a few thanks, but if u don't want me to that fine too!, but i will give him this www,ofa.org site!!.

My website is public, anyone can visit it…

  • Sometimes it takes quite awhile for the results to show up on the OFA site.

Fanconi is no longer the quick death sentence it was before Dr. Gonto's protocol, but many many vets are not knowledgeable about it. Dr. Gonto is more than willing to talk with your vet.
Because you have not seen symptoms yet, you may not need to get the blood gases yet. However, I personally would strip test for sugar in the urine more frequently, keeping in mind that some dogs spill intermittently especially in the early stages of the syndrome. The strips are relatively inexpensive and easy to read on your own - you don't need the vet to do this. You can get them at Costco or Sam's Club or any pharmacy. Just make sure you get the Diastix and not the Ketostix.
If you want, you can also join the Yahoo Fanconi Dogs list - just go to Yahoo Groups and look it up for contact info. There are people there with a wealth of experience with Fanconi affected dogs, and it's a wonderful, supportive group!

Don't panic, many dogs live long, happy, fulfilling lives with this syndrome, just love him for as long as you have him.

Terry and the Illusion Pack (6 previous dogs with Fanconi Syndrome, but I will never knowingly breed another!)
