Thanks for sharing. I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. But take comfort in knowing you did the right thing. Ringo needed the peace that only you could give. What you did was the most unselfish act. You are now taking the pain and I'm sure Ringo is up there jumping around on the beach stealing cookies. Just last year I had to do the same. My path is similar to yours. We saw an ad in the paper as well: "1 yr old red/white Basenji". We had great times hiking and playing on the beach. Brie was just over 14 last year. A year prior she lost her hearing then her bladder control then most cognitive abilities. I started working from home and was able to spend more time with her. But towards the end, she didn't seem to recognize me. She started to walk into things and was rapidly loosing weight. I saw her fall down a flight of stairs and it was tearing me up inside. I talked to several vets who all came to the same conclusion. It was time to let go. It was the only way I could give her her dignity back and it was the hardest decision I've ever had to make. Ever. It took several weeks to start to move on and several months to not think about it ALL the time. I still think about her a lot, but now I think about the good times with her. Just take some peace in knowing you did the right thing. You had some great times with Ringo. Most dogs never get to go the beach or share experiences that you did. You gave Ringo a great life and I'm sure he's up there driving Brie nuts about now. God has a special place for animals and I truly believe you'll see him again.

I am saddened by your loss. It is SO hard to lose a beloved pet. Holding on to the memories helps. I hope you are able to share your love with another dog in the future.

@JazzysMom: Robyn, this is so tragic! I'm sorry for your loss. What awful reminders of how quick these dogs are. Yes it does. And the people that I had placed Bonkers and his brother Blitzz with Friday had owned Basenjis for 20 years. They were very responsible people who were experienced with the breed. But somehow the dog managed to blast past them through the door. They spent the entire night patrolling the area, spotting Bonkers several times but he was too confused and frightened to go to the people he had only known a few hours. This was a tragedy for both myself and the new owners. We are all still in shock about it. The remaining dog Blitzz has a bad case of seperation anxiety. I am concerned with how he will be now that his brother is gone. :(

thoes are beautiful. My grandmother actually got the statue of the red and white you have on the bottom. I keep it on the fire place mantle so I am always being watched over. I am sorry for your loss.

16, that was the age of Damian when he passed. Lots of love and a happy home can do that. Maybe it's just the breed, but they love you right to the end.

Deepest sympathy. De La was a beautiful girl. I'm sure many will tell you the kindest way to honor her memory and impact on your life is to one day, when you are ready, offer love to another Basenji.

I am so sorry for your loss. I know how badly that can hurt. I have to concentrate on my current furbaby to keep from bawling over the one I lost last november. Good luck to you.

I must say YES!!! We do have the most wonderful and entertaining dogs in the world! I feel really lucky to have adopted my out of a shelter, though her adoption came a month after losing our precious poodle mix girl. The shelter had her listed simply as a whippet mix, but she is basenji through and through. Her B500 the very minute I brought her home was definately a new experience for me. I LOVE IT!
