@wizard: I would still recommend an obedience class - not only does it help with your training at home it helps socialize your dog to other dogs and other people. Work especially on the come command because sooner or later your dog will bolt because he sees a squirrel or the door got left open a crack or whatever (nearly everyone here has had this happen) and if the come command is really strong chances are you'll get him back - just a warning to be prepared. "If it does break you'll wish you had fixed it."[/QUOTE Moses has taken off twice over a leaf, and luckily he did run right back when he was commanded to come. My husband has purchased some "dog whisperer" books & videos of some kind and is doing a great job training without frustrating Moses to bad. We train for about 15min a day, twice a day on the weekend. [image: attachment_p_71931_0_family-12-11-08-249.jpg]

@dorvaan: He's gonna be incredibly picky about his toys. We got him 5 different ones, to begin with. He ignores all of them, except for one. Now, little rawhide bones? That's a whole 'nother story….. If he spent a lot of time in a kennel he might not be used to playing with toys. If he likes food-based toys you could try a stuffed kong or or something like these… http://www.premier.com/View.aspx?page=dogs/products/behavior/busybuddy/squirreldude/description http://www.triplecrowndogs.com/product/1591/Everlasting-Treat-Ball.html You can get them on Amazon or a lot of other websites. I saw the treat-ball at Petco. And if you are interested in taking the puppy to a eye doc, I can get some recommendations for you. There are a lot of basenji people in the southern part of the state and I can get some references for you when I meet up with the basenji club this weekend.

There is a reason behind the eating problems/episodes. Like I said in my earlier post that health issues can lead to difficult behavior. When the dog is feeling bad it will be hard to deal with just like if you were sick. To start make an appt right away with the vet and get the blood work done. I'm surprised the vet didn't suggest this. Dogs pick up bad stuff when they're at the pound/shelter.

Welcome to the pack – what a beautiful boy (but then what basenji isn't beautiful). The look in his eye makes me think he's going to grow up into a real teaser :)

Admittedly Basenjis and sheep are a problem. Thank you for such friendly welcomes. I have had some Basenjis who I did eventually manage to 'train'!!? to be safe with sheep and could wander among them and occasionally help to herd, others (including my current pack are killers and can't be left to wander freely where the sheep are. We have a double gate system for visitors. There was a time when I could have taken them all out for walks together but now I take them 3 at a time and my whole day is taken up with exercising dogs. When I get the hang of my digital camera I'll post some piccies. Nomrdggs - I'm not sure I have kept my sanity!!!! Tanza - I have actually seen some of our original imports - and I have attempted to breed as close to the original type as I can. I bred my last litter 4 years ago.

Our basenji is 4 months old. Anyone have a basenji that enjoys digging..on the couch? Also, when she's in her crazy mode she tends to bite when we try to stop her. She will actually keep the biting up for a while. Then, all of a sudden she's coming over to lay on my lap and give kisses. She's like Jekyll and Hyde from one second to the next.

Humane is a double edged sword IMO. Yes, they do help dogs, but there are problems with the agency as well. There are many breeds that would now be extinct except for breeders who had the dedication to keep the breed alive. Basenji's would never be known in the world except for dedication of someone who decided to take them from Africa. The Chinook was saved from extinction in 1981 with 11 breedable dogs! So breeders have their place, and definitely the humane has it's place. I don't discount them, there are just two sides to the story. Of course this is MO only!

@Rita: Pat yes we did get Jaycee's AKC application at the time we got her. Have not got cert back yet as we were really slow in her name made us slow in mailing. Rita Jean Great, it would be good if you gave Sally W the information for her website to update the pedigrees. Many of us rely heavily on the pedigree site when thinking about breeding and researching dogs…. You can do contact Sally at Zande Basenjis (just do a seach for her website and drop her an email with the info)....

@Judith: Thank you for your information. We got our Basenji from a nephew who got him from the Santa Barbara Humane Society. My nephew was unable to have a pup afterall, and we're delighted we have Obi. The litter of pups (three of them) were taken to the Society. I don't know who the parents are. Well welcome to the world of Basenjis… you might want to think about doing the Fanconi DNA test since you don't have any information on his sire and dam.. you can learn about the test at www.basenjihealth.org And I hope to see you at our Puppy Match/Lure trial end of May… And we love to see pictures
