@Nemo: Hey Moth. I hope you and Watson are able to join some of the BCOSW activities in the future. Unfortunately the one we had today was rained out :( but we have some more planned in the near future. What part of Wisconsin are you in? I'm up by Green Bay. Clay Hi Nemo. We are in Madison. Going to events sounds like fun :)

@Vintinck: If you are interested in Toys, I would highly recommended a Papillon. They are extremely intelligent and easily trained. They are also quite athletic/agile for a toy breed. They do well in agility and I've even seen some large Paps in flyball. My pap was never super "yippy" but I have met a few who are. They are in the toy group but are from the spaniel family. Yes, the Papillon is is a great little dog - my sister had one once and he was the joy of her life. They are loyal, and intelligent, and the right size for somebody looking for a toy, but not a tiny dog. Her dog was not yappy - he barked if someone was coming into the house, but as soon as she "sshhh'd" him, he quited right down. That's not a bad thing, he was protecting his house and his people until he was given the sign it was all okay.

Great to have you and Gizzmo here with us. I can't wait to see some pictures! Regarding potty/pee training, do you have a command word to use to let Gizzmo know it's his pee time? We use 'hurry hurry'. Just remember that he'll need to pee after sleeping, eating and play times. In a thread awhile back, it was said that a dog at 5 months 'should' be able to hold their pee for 6 hours. The rule for that is taking their age and adding 1, hence Gizzmo could hold for 6 hours. At 5 months, I was setting the alarm for around 5:30 in the morning to get up and let Kipawa out. Eventually he was the one that let me know that he didn't want to be woken at 5:30 a.m. So, I decided to trust him, and he didn't let me down. No accidents. Gizzmo will be there in no time. Time flies when you have a basenji! :)

@maxamali: Long story short I am electing to go without surgery and treat with anti-inflammatory medicine as well as a joint supplement. For a joint supplement, I can highly recommend (from personal experience with our previous Basenji, Maxx), Missing Link Plus. It's expensive at places like Petco and PetsMart, but you can find it much cheaper by doing an Internet search.

Than you SharonG. I'll try my local horse supply trader. Fortunately Jewel only has the one but it's in a vulnerable position especially as she's getting a bit wobbly nowadays.

hey, you could get your feet wet by volunteering to foster or transport Basenjis! Go to BRAT web site and sign up. ALSO, go to dog shows and meet some basenjis. We have california breeders and owners here so you can get some hands on! http://basenjirescue.org/volunteer.asp

She is gorgeous! There are some good doggie Daycare places here in Tampa, I don't know of any right near Busch Gardens though. We have Camp BowWows (near the airport) and a place called Fuzzy Buddies (near Ybor City).

Thank you all! Sorry I haven't been able to answer sooner. There is just so much work… But don't worry, I have been reading the forum even tough I haven't really had the time to write :) Petra, you are absolutely right. Our boys do have good winter coats, otherwise it would just be too cold for them. This winter specially was horribly cold: cars had trouble starting, trains were always late, some houses had problems with frozen water pipes etc... When it's that cold, our boys luckily go to "hibernate" mode. They mostly only wanted to the back yard and stayed there just long enough to lift their foot once and then they ran straight back inside :) Problem with winter jackets is that they never really fit for a basenji. If the tail is comfortably, then all the big muscles on hind legs are also exposed and that just doesn't work. I decided to make raincoats and winter jackets for both boys myself, because the jackets in stores just weren't good enough (and they are quite expensive). Last winter I finished 1 raincoat, this winter the second raincoat and I started making the first winter coat. If this pace continues, I might have all the jackets made in 2013 xD Boys are so happy the spring has arrived. They could walk for miles, there is so much to sniff, search and hunt! And obviously there are really delicious scents outside because every time we come back inside, both boys search the biggest stuffed toys they can and then they start to ...hmm... "practice" :o
