Thanks for all the help :o) I did notice that my B was even more itchy than usual the day his paw seemed to bother him more than normal, so maybe it is allergies. I gave him a benadryl, which seemed to help. Next time I take him in for a check up, I'll have to check with the vet…

I make boiled chicken with rice, carrots, green beans and sometimes peas. He loves it the first day, but he doesn't like eating "leftovers" the next day. And yet he'll eat an old deep-fried chicken wing that he "discovers" near the park. (And nearly rip my hand off if I try to get it away from him.) Go figure!

Nothing, I think she was just depressed about the move and changing her food…our vet said it was likely too early for pyometra, considering that she is still bleeding a decent amount. I'm just going to keep a close eye on her and her temp for now.

re: puppy mills and testing only one parent - I know for a FACT that at one place the sire of several years of litters was not the sire - it was a male who had good papers so his name was listed even though he was DEAD. One of the PM's males was the sire of several litters attributed to this OTHER dog. (I happen to know the person who owned the substitute sire)

So it is unfortunate but the testing will only be as ethical as those who provide information to the test.

Geez I hate to even say that but I am afraid that it's true.

No doubt about that… and another reason to only look at AKC who has a DNA parentage program for high volume breeders...

I love the look of Baron, now that is a cute basenji 😃 I do notice that I love the masculin looking yet sweet B's. The way the muzzle looks is important to me I notice some basenji's have long slender muzzle and to me they look a little rat like, I guess I'm just one for the blockish heads with the shorter muzzle. I also like the super curly tails! All the other traits I really dont care if its a B its cute.

I believe you should print the information about Dr. Gonto's protocal and give the information to your vet. Your vet can follow Dr. Gonto's treatment program, i.e. lab tests to run; follow-up lab suggestions; therapeutic goals; management dosing guidelines, etc. Your vet should read all the information. There is also also correspondence info: address, email and phone/fax numbers to reach Dr. Gonto.

So sorry for you and your baby. Good luck with your visit tomorrow. I would go in armed with this information.

Yes–I forgot that there are actually homeopathic vets available. We are so lucky here in the Bay Area--we have great vets, specialists and also UC Davis veterinary school/drs not too far away--and believe me--I have used all of these resources over the past 18 years.....

An update on Ben's condition. He had his teeth cleaned this morning and the vet had to remove several teeth. A large tooth in the back of the mouth had a cavity that went all the way to the root. He never lost his appetite during the whole ordeal or seemed to have any sensetivity of his mouth. I hope this is the end of the suffering he was going through. He was a rescue dog so we don't have the previous owners records as to dental care he had in the past. You can be sure he will be monitored from here on out for any sign of tooth decay or tarter build up. Thanks to everyone who replyed to my inquiry on Basenji health.

Gipper's last weigh in, which was a few months ago, was at a rock-solid 32 pounds! He's not fat, though. He still has a well defined waist, as well as ribs that can be felt when he's standing still, and gets plenty of exercise. I'll try to get some recent pics up soon- he looks as if he's a body-building Basenji! He's really muscular, and I think he's closer to 18-20 ins. at the shoulder, rather than the typical 15-17. He's a big boy, for sure.

Strangely, I have had at least two bitches gain a final inch in height between 1 year old and 2 years old…

I like the girls petite, ideally....but our beautiful Bella is at least as tall as most of the boys around here...and our Luna is tiny, and light...so although the standard has a narrow range for ideal...in reality there is a wide range of "normal"

The Basenji is still used by hunter/gatherers. It has incredible stamina and is excellent at solving problems.

When I got my first Basenji, she would eat everything and escape when she could. After I took her mnt biking (or hiking in the snow) she mellowed out. She knew every weekend she could go out and run, dig, wallow in dirt, sniff other dog's butts and just be a canine. This gave her an outlet and her destructive and nomadic behavior really slowed.

I trained her to follow me in the summer. I let her know I had water and let her loose (outside the city, of course) she would take off and do whatever it Basenjis do. Eventually she would get thirsty and find me. Everytime she came back I would giver her water. This conditioned her that I have value. The first couple times were harrowing.

Now its no big deal. She trained my other Basenjis how they whole mnt biking/hiking thing works.

She is still bleeding. I rescheduled for two weeks from Thursday. Her mom bled for almost a month and a half before letting the dad mount her. This sucks.

yes, Caesar has been sneezing a lot as well. I suspect there is stuff a bloomin'
