I don't understand the way the vet is getting a urine sample. I've been told for a urinalysis what really needs to be done is the vet takes a sample directly from the bladder with a needle? That's how my vet would test Max's urine (this is when they do the urinalysis at the vets or send out to a lab). With an experienced vet–it isn't painful. Also--if Max had just gone potty--and his bladder was empty--they would sometimes have to confine him there at the vets in a kennel and wait for his bladder to fill up before taking any with a needle. This might take a a couple of hours to get a good sample.

That also struck me as odd that the vet didn't draw direct. It sounds very serious I know how you feel. I hope he gets better soon!

Yeah! I can remember my girl doing that too, kicked me right in the shin one time and it HURT!

I'm glad he is ok!

My dog did the bolt quite a few times in her younger years but she always had the devil's luck to not get hit.

Nothing is sacred with a basenji around!! My mum used to have to put up the trash can as my B always ended up getting into it right after we closed the front door to go out.

My girls name starts with A… Ashenputtel. It is german for cinderella We call her Ash or Ashen for short.

Quesitons you can ask yourself:
Is it only in one particular season in which this is happening?
How old is your dog? Is he fixed? - could be hormonal?
Changes in the dogs food?
Changes in what kind of material he sleeps on / does he wear anything like a doggie blanket now that he didn't before?
Is he itchy mostly a few hours after his bath?

If you think its allergy, try eliminating possible things from his environment one at a time to work out what might be contributing to it.

When my basenji was two I recall she had a few bumps, chewed the top part of her tail bare and had dandruff. We cured most of it with finding the right shampoo for her skin type to use. I think part of it may have been hormonal.

My Basenji also growled when woken up or moved from her warm spot. Didn't have a food problem though.

I've once seen her wake herself up from a doggie nightmare, she even snapped in the air a few times before she awoke.

The only way we could persuade her to move without the fuss was with something she liked even more than her warm spot like a treat or the heater.

The breeder we bought Ash from told us that Basenji's were bred to pack hunt lions in Africa. Ash certainly seems like she is more sight than sound or sniff.

Definately steak, or lamb chop. And she loves warm milk.

One of my moms cairn terriers did the same thing when he was a pup. He is a fairly dominant alpha male dog with very set territorial boundaries. Perhaps your dog only feels safe to stash his food in his spots that he knows are "safe"?

Not sure what was being used before, my mum was taking care of the bathing as she was a family dog. Before this incident the only time when our girl ever got a flee on her is when we put her in a boarding kennel for a holiday we went on – never again!

But yah whatever we were using before for the ticks didn't work! I can remember the vet saying that front line is good and we used that after she was in for a three night stay. It was horrible, I didn't sleep a wink.

Shelby is right, there is probably more of a potential with the ticks in Australia, esp. on the eastern coast where I am from, but the paralysis tick also exists in the US and in Europe too. So I guess you can't be completely safe anywhere.

I've been living in Florida for six months now (moved bcuz my hubby is from the US), the skeeters grow pretty big here too!! LOL. I didn't feel right taking Ash over here as she very old and is my "family's" dog, even though technically I picked her out of the litter, trained her and fed her for years. I miss her alot!

Yup I think most of our dogs need to find the right spot and are very selective when they go potty.

Make certain that if you have long grass or long shrubbery nearby that if he/she goes and does her business there that you check for ticks if you have ticks in your area every day!!

My girl got a paralysis tick on her when she was 13 years old at the time and she was very close to death. It only took a day with the tick on her before she started dragging her hind legs (they were paralyzed) and getting VERY sick. We were very fortunate the vet was able to save her and she was able to recover her leg functions completely.

We didn't keep our girl outside she was an indoor dog, we live in a suburban area and never thought that could have happened to us but it did.

My girl of 14 years old loves to try and eat the possum that visits on her balcony sometimes.

She has relented to the cockatoos and lorrikeets that come down.

In my personal opinion, basenjis don't get along with most dogs generally unless they are brought up to do so. They are a small package with a big attitude.

My dog liked some dogs, others she would have outright wars with, especially if it had anything to do with her territory. My girl had a peeing competition with the scottie terrier across the way from us, every time we let her out, the first thing on her agenda was race off and to reclassify her boundaries! And when the scottie was let out she did the same.

The funniest thing I've ever had my girl do is get into the christmas presents. She was a little horror when she was younger! So we tied a string alarm up in the longue room to protect the christmas tree and presents beneath, and hung bells on the string to let us know if she tried getting into it.

Well, who said basenji's weren't intelligent???!

After the first time we were alerted by the jingle and told her no, she caught onto the way the trap worked and effectively stepped quietly over it.

She is definately not a stupid dog. Defiant, deviant, willful, disobidient and stubborn at her worst yes, stupid – no. She was also a regular escape artist when she was younger too. Although in saying all this, she knows just as many dog tricks as any other dog and will do them more than willingly for a treat.

My girl used to cry alot and had seperation issues when we had to do our own thing at work or school. I had to beg my parents to keep her because the behavioural issues got out of hand ie. chewing curtains and longues, underpants, garbage strewn throughout the house. I made my stand and I am glad I did because for most of the years we had her she has been manageable after about the 5 year mark.

My girl is a very picky eater and only likes one brand of dog food which just so happens to be the most expensive kind!

When we first got her the breeder also told us she loved vegtables – she HATES them! When we feed her steak and veggies she will systematically pick the steak out and leave the veggies in the dish.

I do hope he gets better. It does sound similar to a diabetic condition.

Yup my black and white sheds ALOT when transitioning from winter to summer. Her lovely rich black coat turns a light soft grey in places and looks a little patchy in the summer months.

My Basenji is very selective about the dogs she gets along with. She doesn't get along with any dogs that would give her attitude or tried to one up her. She was the target of some off lesh attacks in her time and once where a pitbull drew blood on her forehead and neckline when we were at the beach. It really shakes you up badly to see a member of your family hurt that way – proudly told though she held her own despite her size until we could get her out of the dogs reach!

It disgusts me how some dog owners would let their dogs off lesh if they cant be 100 certain that no incidents like that will happen.
