Instead of Prozac,I recommend 5-HTP and a calming treat given daily.
Prozac can cause liver issues down the road.
Please, people TRAIN YOU CHILDREN !!!
It's not the basenjis fault.
If you can't get a handle on your child, how can you every get a handle on your basenji.
I have chased many a family with unruly kids out of my house who wanted a basenji.
And, how many wonderful basenjis get rehomed because of these very issues.

RE: Basenji service and Therapy dogs
Hi
My Diva is a service dog and has been for 5 years now. She is very good at what she does and is my lifeline. I have trained her in a unique way because of her size. She blocks by jumping on me to put distance between a person that comes into my personal space. She also wakes me up from night terrors by climbing onto my chest. I'm in good paws with my faithful Diva by my side.
I'm also in the process of training my full African as an alternate,he is 3/4 of the way in his training.Kathryn

RE: Hunting with Basenji
Years ago I sold a pup to a hunter that hunted every year for grouse.
Little Maya not only was a great hunter but the other hunters with Brittanies all wanted to know where he got his great little hunting dog. -
RE: Keto Diet on Basenjis for Seizures? Would it work?
Hi Myles,
My experience with seizures was with one of mine who I got back after his owner passed away.
He had a brain tumor (not cancerous ),non operative due to its closeness to his optic nerve.
He was on phenobarbital but when he came and was fine for months,I put him on a homeopathic
remedy that worked for him and he never had another seizure ever again.
My experience with the keto diet has been with my Rocky who was diagnosed with a tumor in his
mouth,(fibrosarcoma). Diagnosed in May of 2017, he is now cancer free after my vet said he had 3
three months to live. They wanted to remove his jaw and I wouldn't allow it. I'm so glad that the
keto diet plus the 30 + supplements that he still is on has worked to keep my boy with me.I believe that our dogs and also us can heal if given the chance . Mother nature knows best and
dogs where not meant to eat kibble. I believe that basenjis especially evolved to eat a nature diet.
Kibble doesn't exist in the jungles of Africa, the natives fed them a natural diet. That being said, try the keto diet as you really can't go wrong. If you need help, just let me know or
go to "The Truth about pet cancer" on YouTube, there is also info on seizures. -
RE: Flying with a Basenji
I can understand airlines cracking down on some ESA'S but for someone who has a "real Service Dog" there are laws to protect that right from the ADA.
I have a Service Dog trained by me and I have documents from a doctor stating that I need her.
I don't fly and don't intend to but if I did I would not allow anyone to stop me as I'm protected by ADA law.
And, yes my Service Dog IS A BASENJI. -
RE: Raw vs Kibble vs Human Grade Food
My big race dog,Rocky(semi-retired) is on the Ketogenic diet. The reason for this is that he was diagnosed with cancer in May of 2006. This diet is raw beef,a small amount of veg.(kale, broccoili, spinach, red cabbage, etc.) and a tablespoon of coconut oil. I also add his many supplements. This diet has helped him beat the odds and he is now cancer free after being told he had 3 months to live. I also add an egg 2x a week and a pet-cal daily. I have found that this diet is also wonderful for my other dogs to keep them healthy. In a day when cancer is out of control in the canine population I will do what I can to keep my dogs from ever being affected again.
I buy a 73%/27% ground beef mix from Walmart. It comes in a tube and is very easy to handle. I also add chicken livers and chicken giblets. I package it in freezer bags and store the thawed for the day in a container in the frig.
It doesn't take long at all and I've never had a problem with it. -
RE: Hard to live with my Basenji
@ktiefen1
I replied with my opinion . I have bred basenjis for 41 years and have educated many puppy people.
I tell people that when they bring a basenji into there house that they are bringing a " mini wolf" into there house.
Trainers that train other breeds are not equipped to "handle" a basenji.
I have used calming herbs and homeopathic remedies with great success and I learned over the years to never take these "wild things" for granted.
I watch people with puppies when they are thinking about a basenji,if they have children,I watch how they discipline there children. Once a coup[le came out to see my pups, they where not able to handle there own children so I sent them on there way. Way to many people are not able to control there children so why would they be able to control a basenji. You have to have strong personality to be able to handle a breed as primitive as a basenji.
I have found that the new Africans are much more trainable and so I have added them to my bloodlines.
I have a basenji Service Dog who is the most remarkable dog and learns faster then a child. Her temperament is outstanding.
Debra, I know you will remember this litter, the one from Jeff S. in Georgia.
She is the bases for my new breeding program. Most breeders out there are not focusing on what is important. You must breed a dog that has a stable temperament but also sell your pups to people who are able to stand up to the uniqueness of this breed. -
RE: Effective Insect Repellent!
Oh, forgot to add, I use shirts that have built in repellent. They also work great.

RE: Lymphoma.
So sorry to hear about your diagnosis .
My Joshua was diag, with Lymphoma also. He's gone now but lived for
another 1 1/2 and died at age 16 years and 8 months.
I maintained him on multiple supplements and he was healthy up to the
last day he passed. -
RE: Bronchial Cough
Try elderberry syrup ( Sambucol ), mix with Manuka Honey and vit. C/mix together x 3 times a day.
Antibiotics won't work if it's a virus !
Shame on your vet.
Make sure your dog stays hydrated.
Also, oregano oil,it will kill the virus. -
RE: Silent Basenji
My guys are some of the most vocal basenjis that I ever had.
My Diva's kids are especially vocal, her one boy,Bolt won't shut up at
dinnertime. I have also found that my full Africans are great singers.
When they all vocalize at once it really is something to hear.
Anyone who has been to a speciality has heard what it can sound like. -
RE: Meet Buxton ...
Hello,
Welcome to the forum,I see our little one is from Jeff Gillespie.
He is very cute.
I co-own 2 Avongara's with Jeff.
Hope that you have many happy years with your Buxton. -
RE: Fanconi vs Renal Failure?
Special "kidney diets" are nothing but garbage, read the label,is it any wonder your dog won't eat it.
Start feeding a raw diet, start with raw ground beef and a handful of veg. and a tablespoon of coconut oil. Dogs in renal failure need good quality protein from animal sources, not the garage in these high priced specialty diets. -
RE: Hard to live with my Basenji
I would like to tell everyone a story about my basenji,Thunder.
Thunder has been gone now since Nov.3,2003,and a more loved
dog there never was.
Thunder was the product of one of my bitches that I sold and had
breeding rights too. She was bred to my wonderful dog,Lightning.
I have told this story many times and even all these years later,it still
makes me cry.
Thunders' dam was exposed to some bad drugs without my knowledge
as his owner had a boyfriend that abused drugs without her knowledge.
Because of this, the two pups that where born had brain damage.
To make a very long story short, Thunder had aggression related seizures.
He bit me MANY times and was very difficult to handle. He wouldn't go in his crate
and he would attack me for no good reason. He also had severe anxiety and separation
issues. But, I loved him dearly and worked to make his life as well as mine as good as possible.
With the help of a very wonderful herbalist,Marina Zacharias of Natural Rearing,I was able to get his mind on straight but only after him being on Prozac for 4 years which destroyed his liver.
He wore a muzzle everyday for his safety as well as mine,it only came off for him to eat.
He never minded and it was a good compromise for us.
I spent thousands on his treatment and I lost him at 8 years old. I never loved another basenji as
much as I loved my Thunderdog. So, if you are willing to WORK HARD and not just throw you dog away,it can be done.
I also blame Rabies vaccine for some of the aggression issues in not only basenjis today but all breeds. If you look at research, the rabies vaccine can and does cause aggression as a side effect.
Go to the Rabies Challenge Fund and look it up.
I tell people, if you are not willing to work with a basenji, don't get one, get a Golden or Shepard,Lab,etc.
Basenjis are a special breed for only the few who have the guts to stick it out. -
RE: Basenji Mix?
She looks a lot like our Avongara's.
One would hope that none of our precious Avongara's end up in shelters.
But, she is a beautiful pup. -
RE: Mojo's Toes
When was the last rabies vaccine ?
My two Avongaras both developed itchy rashes on there feet, legs three days after there rabies vaccine. There is a connection no matter what the vet says.
Look up the rabies challenge fund and read what it says.
They will be getting exemptions from now on.
These reactions can be seen many months and sometimes years after the vaccination. -
RE: Hard to live with my Basenji
bluebert,
I'm not rubbing your face in it as you say, I'm just a little fed up with people in general that don't do any research into the breed that they are getting.
A dog is a very big responsibility, you will have a dog for roughly 15/16 years,it is like adopting a child.
If your breeder won't take responsibility for the lives that he produced then shame on him but, also shame on you. What is done is done and now you have a problem on your hands.
I use the homeopathic remedy ignatia amara, you can get it in the health food store. I also use Valerian Root Complex also at the health food store. These will make crate training easier, It will also calm him down so he is not to aggressive. You also can try some lavender oil on your hands and pet him with it but only in areas he can't reach as basenjis will lick and clean themselves like a cat and you don't want him to ingest it. Orange ruffles also works well.
Vets will only prescribe drugs which I don't agree with anymore since I lost my beloved Thunder.
I can't stress enough to people that they find a breeder that will work with you and in my case I offer to train my pups for the owner. Being a responsible breeder is just not until the pups leave your house ,it's for the life of that dog. -
RE: Effective Insect Repellent!
I use Only Naturals, Natural Defense Spray. It's made with Neem Oil and I've been using it for a number of years.
I ran out for a while this year and my Diva paid the price with a nasty bite from a spider.
She ran a 104.5 temp and her face blew up,she was covered in a deep red rash.
A visit to the vet for a shot of Dex and was on pred. for 10 days.
I made sure I had ordered the spray as it works for all kinds of creepy ,crawlies.Kathryn and Diva Service Dog
